Rejoice. For very bad things are about to happen.

Well now, this certainly is good news, not!  The one publisher out there that sometimes makes SOE look good. Oh well, better than K2 I suppose.

Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!

Saves me from having to follow the game's development any more. Let it be JGC version 2.0 for all I care now.

10:1 its "free to play"/"microtransaction" model. Want that new ship? That'll be 5 bucks. Want some ammo? 2 bucks...

Listing MMOs/Chars/Lvls does not make your post any more relevant. It just adds more crap to ignore.

Whats so bad about codemasters?

LOTRO + DDO EU support was excellent, low lagg, stable servers and great community reps.

Just becuase their home made MMO's arent cream of the crop doesnt mean they arent a capable company.

You're really not very bright are you?

Archlord is free to play in Korea and Codemasters thought they could make it successful by providing item shop items to the players at a fix amount per month for the subscription fee, but they quickly realised it's a crap game, full of bugs and no sane person would pay to play it. So they reverted it to it's free to play state.

RF Online was a subscription based game from the start in Korea so Codemasters continued the model over here, but after Korea went free to play Codemasters had a lot of problems getting new content the Korean developers laid down an ultimatum to Codemasters, either convert to the new free to play model or you will never get another update for RF Online again. So Codemasters then had the choice, cancel RF or change it to free to play, no brainer there, they went with the free to play option.

DDO and Lotro are subscription based because Turbine want them subscription based.

For all FOUR of Codemasters MMOs the developers NOT Codemasters, are the ones who have decided the payment model for the games that they currently use. Codemasters wanted all four to use subscription based systems cause it's a hell of a lot more profitable, but they couldn't make it work so had to concede to the developers wishes on the two Korean games.

Lotro  will NEVER be free to play with an item shop, and Jumpgate Evolution will be whatever NETDEVIL want it to be.

You didn't read the recent interview with CM's head MMO honcho did you?

I did, but he's a suit, I doubt he really knows what MMOs are or anything about them. Suffice to say, I was around when it happened, they may be enjoying new found success with AL and RF now they are F2P, they may even be making more money, but to date, none of the decisions to go F2P were solely their's to make, in both cases they forced to do it, once by the community due to failure of the game, and once by the developer, due to changed in the local market in Korea.

I doubt very much CM could persuade Turbine to do it, not when Lotro makes such a stinking fortune compared to the rest of their games, it was solely responsible for them hitting record profits last year.

The problem is the beancounters in these companies are looking at the profits made from microtransactions and drooling. Smedley said "You'd be suprised how many people spend more than a monthly fee." in one of his recent interviews. That tells me that everyone in the MMO business will be trying to switch to a micropayment system sooner or later (unless there is serious consumer backlash, but there's just far too many people with ADD to hope that will happen).

Yep, some people do, I know of people spending $500 - $1000 a month on item shop items, but then there are a lot of people who don't spend money in item shops, and just because it can work, doesn't make it garunteed.

If you have a subscription you know every player is contributing, you are making profit from each player no risk involved. If it's free, then you have to rely on the game attracting enough of those addicts
