It really makes me think, what happened to having tons of races to choose from in MMO's?

I mean in SWG my favorite part about the game was the ability to choose all these cool different races, and know peoples abilitys, strengths, and weakness's just based on those abilitys.

Now adays everyone has this whole "Only humans, only humans only..what...o yea..humans" attitude and its really bugging me. Why not something else besides humans even. Like make the one race you have something new at least instead of freaking humans.

I don't think it is so much having different races, as it is having the same high fantasy ones like Elves, Dwarfs, Orcs, etc, over and over and well, over again. Majority of people are kind of tired of them, especially the Elvess.

When a MMO comes up with a new, original race to play, many people are pretty interested and excited about it, but whenever a new MMO comes out and gives everyone a Dark ElfLight Elf or Dwarf deal, its kind of too much of the same thing. Everyone kind of expects to see humans because, well, thats what we are, and we like to represent ourselves even in fantasy worlds.

I agree with you 100%! So far Age of Conan looks like the best short of new MMOs for me, but its all humans. Ok, the lore is as it is, but it still sounds quite boring to me. That was one of the main reaons I clung so unreasonably long to Vanguard. I really loved SWG for just the same reasons!

I guess developers are just lazy, since it is more difficult to make clothing and armor and stuff for so many races. In fantasy games I always was most fond of the most non-human races, like Sarnath from EQ2 or my personal fav the Bothans from SWG, heh. But alas it sadly has gotten out of fashion. Its either all humans or with luck orcs, elves and dwarves additionally. How sad.

I'd like to see more than the atypical white-bread human, elf, elf with purple skin and no blouse, dwarf that looks like a santa reject races. Kind of a conundrum, I hate most human races, don't like elves, don't really feel like playing a chick (that's the only way I'm gonna put up with a D. elf), hate dwarves, don't wanna play half giant.

I like the animal  type races better.. but I'd like to see something other than kitty, lizard, birdman. Seriously.. could we stop making the furry races so damned ugly? That's one of the reasons I never went for EQ2, every single race made me cringe.

Where are all the undead races? Cmon.. I wanna play a skele necromancer, not some pasty emo sorc.

why do humans build, because it isn''t there

because humans are the best.   there's no forced RP attached the them for the most part.

I especially like EvE's race system.

Scale of Development: Hobbiest, Micro-Indy, Indy, BB, AAA.

Forced RP?

Are you saying that adding a  moose race(orns and all) to a game forces you to RP as a moose?

Vi veri universum vivus vici

Games like Stargate World's and the possible rumored Warhammer 40k MMO will put an end to a lot of this "same shit different pile" mentality. Tolkien was great, but I dont think he wanted everyone using his races.

IMO back in the day when there were a lot of races (MUDS), races often had their own unique abilities, bonuses and weaknesses.  And it was good.

Over time, people heard the call of the siren known as balance.   They asked, complained, whined and moan that one thing benefited a specific race and put others behind and that it was bad to do so.  Weaknesses were never really accepted by the masses.

The devs, hearing the plea of the people and the calls for balace, altered their approach.  They still wanted to have races and they certainly wanted happy players (a myth?).  They started to diminish the benefits until races didn't make a hugh difference.

And still the people called for balance claiming even the smallest advantage was in fact a large broken design problem.  The devs were forced to remove remove races or at least design new games with less races our of fear of losing the mythical happy player.  Then one day, a dev asked, why have races at all if there isn't any difference.  The answer is........................................

It can do!
