I was putting together a list of games(good/bad/mediaocre)...that by their design were places to do far more than just xp. In these worlds you might reasonably expect crafting, player housing, other assorted occupations etc Here is my list so far. Please add to the list as you will.Perhaps it will provide a suggestion or two of a new world one might like to visit..and perhaps stay a while.(ps......there are no right or wrong listings...your opinion is all that counts).

UO        RUNESCAPE             STAR WARS GALAXIES     ANARCHY   EVERQUEST 2   WURMONLINE

LOTRO       VANGUARD       SECOND  LIFE      ROMA VICTOR       (your added nominations)

If you haven't read the book CULTURE WARRIOR by Bill O'Reilly...you should.

Boredom is in the temperament of the beholder.

Ryzom
EVE Online

Yes, both of these are in my signature - because I love virtual world / sandbox MMORPGs.

If you're going to include Second Life, you should also include There.com.

Could you clarify your parameters a bit? .. I notice that you have LOTRO and EQ2 in there but not WoW; they're all similar games except that LOTRO/EQ2 have instanced housing and WoW doesn't, whereas WoW has FFA open-world PVP support (on PVP servers) whereas LOTRO doesn't.

Are you only looking for games with housing in them, or just ones that have good support for roleplay? How important do you consider PvP/PK?

There is no perfect definition. Include those that meet your definition..or you think should be included...because........

Oh, ok.. well if it's just which MMO has things to do other than level, then it's probably going to be all of them, but I'll only list the ones that I have personal experience with:

DDO - For the scripted "story-like" instance missions.
DAoC - For the RvR alone.
EVE - For the crafting/PvP
EQ2 - For the crafting.
LOTRO - For the crafting, housing and RP.
PotBS - For the crafting/economy.
Second Life - Obvious reasons.
SWG - For the crafting/housing.
Tabula Rasa - For the CP control/clan wargames.
UO - For the crafting, housing and RP.
Vanguard - For the crafting, diplomacy and housing.
WoW - For the PvP battlegrounds and crafting.

Some of the above games don't do their "non levelling" parts very well, but they all at least have them.

Entropia Universe - As it is along the same lines as Second Life which you've included; open world, complete customisation, real world economics etc etc.

MMORPG Character Monuments

...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest...

MOst of the mainstream P2P games have a lot of other gameplay features aside from leveling. Some games just impliment it better than others.

You will probably end up naming the most common games and the ones having fairly high ratings here on MMORPG. However no one has mentioned Guild Wars so far, which is strange since it can keep you occupied for a long time and is truly worth being mentioned.

That's the last one I would thikn of in this context.

It has no crafting, no houses, no roleplaying particuarly.  Basically just leveling and pvp.

If you're talking about MMORPG's that have a virtual world feel to them or that have elements of a virtual world, then you're dealing with a VERY short list.

UO, SWG, Ryzom, EVE

I know there are some smaller titles and indie titles that would go on that list, but thats basically it.  A lot of times I think people confuse "persistant world" with "virtual world".  Every MMO has a persistant world, but very few have any real VW elements to them.  A g
