How is it exactly that people manage to get into closed betas?

I've played games with so many people that seem to get into every closed beta that comes around, yet I apply for everything I see and the only beta I've ever done was Bloodymare (I don't want to talk about that piece of **** either).

I'm not complaining, I just want to know if there is something I can do in the future to increase my odds of getting selected to have a hand in new games as they are developed, help test them out and get myself a sneak peek on the way.

If a forthcoming game opens a forum, make sure to register and post on day one.

Also I've met plenty of people that have claimed to have been in closed Betas for one game or another that when quizzed on certain events that happened in those closed Betas didn't have a clue. Being in a closed Beta for a game, especially a popular or highly anticipated game has become sort of a badge of coolness in the gaming world. Not everyone who claims they were in one closed beta or another actually were so be wary. I've been in a few as most here probably have but one person claiming to have been in them all is probably not being truthful as it's highly unlikely. Open Betas are another story all together as most who apply get invited to those that is why they are called open.

Like someone said before me being active on the forum for that MMO is imperative. Unless it's a game like WAR where it's pretty much pot luck.

Another thing is keep checking out games websites like this one, competitions are a popular way of giving out beta keys and is how I've got into the one only closed beta I got into, all the others I've had to wait like the rest of us till OB.

edit: also a good amount of people I've hard complaining they haven't been invited to beta is a common fallacy that they can't understand why because they have an uber gaming rig. I don't understand where anyone drew that as something that makes you more likely to get into beta, any sensible game developer will want to test their game on all different levels of machines.

Make sure you have an up-to-date gaming rig, not an old system.  Better systems always get chosen first.

Look out for other ways to get into the beta such as being a premium member of a certain website like fileplanet etc etc

Don't state that your 12 years old even if you are on a beta application, say that your 17 or 18 at least.

Other than that its just luck.

I spoke too soon haha. You need to be 18 to get into closed betas to be able to agree to NDA's.

I'd say my usual method is getting a bunch of friends to sign-up that I know would quit 3 days into technical turmoil and transfer their account credentials over to me, but such a method is almost aways against any form of expected decency and respect towards NDAs! 

So I'd say, in addition to joining official forums if there are in fact official forums, be sure to sign-up for beta as soon as applications open up. While your chances might be random, usually they're increased by belonging to an earlier pool that might be segmented off from latter pools. Even if its only one collective pool, each day that passes brings new sign-ups that lessen your odds; and each day that passes that you aren't signed up might exclude you from a scheduled draw.

So be an early and active part of the community. That's about all you can do.
