AOC has in my opinion pushed the limits of the MMO genre forward,

All games previous to this has may have a few extra bits and bobs but not none so far as i am aware has incorporated all that AOC has.

Some of the outstanding ones include, the new combat system, Mounted combat, Formations, Fatalities, Collision detection, spell weaving to mention but a few.

I think FUNCOM taking all they learnt in AO have/are producing an MMO that is more than the so called WoW clone(read as EQ1 clone)

And will truly be one of the first 2nd Gene MMO, unlike vanguard that simply added weakness's to the combat and thought they were making a 2nd gene MMO lol.

OK the game has not yet been released yet but by now i feel it is safe to know what is coming and even though some of the things that are featured may not work as intended on day one they will be fixed in due course.

As well as the required balancing of classes that come with PvE/PvP games.

Bugs can be fixed so long as the design of the game is solid.

Future games devs will now have to look at AOC and have to either match or better the feature set in AoC if they want to produce a ground breaking game.

Even if you don't beleive that AoC is a 2nd gen MMO at the very least it is a move in the right direction and finally the genre is moving away from the wow-clone stereotype.

Just because you can chop someone's head off, doesn't make it next generation

Thats called a gimmick

Account was stolen!

It's selling points are nudity and violence, I'll let people figure it out for themselves.

Account has been stolen, why would someone want to steal my account?

I didnt write " AoC is 2nd gen cos u can chop someones head off" did I !?!?!

If that the best argument you can put up Ghoul31 then no wonder you are not impressed! Maybe you are not old enough to play it.

Its selling points are far from violence and nudity lol ! Do you know anything about the game before commenting?

you said fatalities, that is chopping someones head off. Read what you write next time

UO had collision detection, nothing new there

Lots of instancing. That is a step backwards, not forwards.

I will have to try the combat before i can judge if its really that different

MMORPG Character Monuments

...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest...

I feel that the term "Next Generation" and "Revolutionary" are used too often more to set Hype than to state fact.

AoC is chronologically a next generation game, yes, because its being released in 2008.

I expect that you will se much of the same gameplay seen in other games like LOTRO, WoW, etc ...but refined and streamlined.

"The one you call messiah is a lie"--- Gary Numan

AoC adds alot of little extras here and there alongside features that were forgotten after the WoW reveloution.

"What's this sad fanbois rambling on about?" you ask yourselves,

1. Spellweaving.

2. Combat system.

3. No Elves (Yay!).

4. Nudity (sorry smg), gore and sex.

5. Siege warfare.

6. PVE and PVP levels.

7. Well known IP.

8. Fighting from mounts.

9. Breaking the mold with classes.

10. You can fire ranged weapons in 1st or 3rd person.

Yeah I know none are particularly amazing nor revoloutionary or next generation alone, but maybe Funcom is doing what Blizzard did. Pooling together a bunch of features everyone likes in existing MMOs and making an MMO themselves, except Funcom are raising the bar a few notches. If they pull it all off that is!

Agricola: "Now the fanbois shall know why they fear the lag, now the haters will understand why they're afraid of AoC!"

Alot of the features I am seeing in AoC that people are claiming is "new" or "innovative" were in UO. Mounted combat, sieges, collision detection, city building, just to name a few. I am still looking forward to AoC but from playing technical tests and the pvp weekend Im not kidding myself that this game is groundbreaking.  Its kinda like those ad's you used to see on PBS: "BSAF (Funcom) didnt make the products you buy, it only makes them better". Unfortunately until I get to play more than just a few snip-its of the game I can't comment on whether or not they made it better.

The combat is not really revolutionary imo, it is just a slightly different version, you still click task bar buttons in a certain order, only the active dodging and moving of shields are really different, but to me it got boring during the limited PVE experience I had.  In light of all of this, Im still going forward with my preorder since I am an avid fan of the books and comics.

Cheers!

Edit: But I do want to say that the game looks and sounds awesome (graphics and sound).

The theory of evolution is as much open to doubt as the theory that the earth goes round the sun.

Having played the combat system. the honest truth is: its not revolutionary, alot is the same. but there is definatly enough different to put this ahead of other mmo's. (haven't played spellweaving yet)

2nd generation is not really definable. some will feel it is, others will not. but this game will push the mmo genre in a new direction, it does try new inovative things. is it all original? no alot is the same, its still very much a mmo.

on the topic of new features formations aren't really in. and sieging, collision detect has been done before. the truely new things to the mmo genre are;

  • combos
  • spell weaving (which might be classed as combos)
  • first person ranging

edit: pherhaps also the first mmo with voice acting?

Its like Shadowbane and 2Moons had a retard son named it Conan , cause it sounded cool. It basically borrows from DDO , Shadowbane , 2moons and mortal kombat to make semi ok game when it gets fixed and unbroken.

I found the game to be rather bland and most of the features not working as intended. Its differently a Funcom product though you can tell with the crapfest beta , lack of concern for bugs and soon to be crap launch.
