An interesting MMORPG, with high character customization, and a community of players where its easy to make friends, and they actually PLAY TOGETHER. 3D graphics, too. >_>

You could try guild wars. I myself do not really like the level cap of 20 however the community is great, its a one off payment and you do quests in groups of around 5 people.

Agreed with Guild Wars. There are games with more customization, but most are hard to find groups in or have other problems.
