Just out of interest, can any of the fanboys quoting the above give me an example of a game that had a terrible beta and a good launch?

Can u name me a game thats had a good beta and good launch:)

You really need to get out more often. There are a ton of MMO's that have had fairly successful launches recently. Just to name a few: City of Heroes, City of Villains, Lineage 2, Lord of the Rings Online and of course, World of Warcraft. I've been a beta tester in each of these games and I can guarantee you that none of them experienced this amount of severe showstopping bugs and crashes just 20 days prior to launch.

Gotta correct you there, WoW was an awful launch, rather than listing the issues it had myself, heres a post from someone who remembers the same WoW beta and launch as I do:

"The true hilarity of it all are the doomsayers bringing up WoW as an example of the pinnacle of MMO progress. Never ceases to give me a good laugh how quickly people forget what a disaster WoW's open beta and release was. I remember constant server downtime, crashed, unbearable lag, authentication error, and weeks of free time award just to make up for the constant unplayability."

No I am gonna correct you. Blizzard WoW client was in a very good state, however the problems were on the serverside. Funcom problems are both the client and the servers.

Whether the problems are client side or server side is completely irrelevant.  Fact is WoW's launch was a lot worse than some people care to admit.  If Joe Bloggs cannot play the game because WoW's servers are constantly being brought down or the client is constantly crashing makes no difference, he classes it as a terrible beta and/or poor launch.

Personally, I don't give a rats ass whether the beta constantly crashes or the game has issues a couple of days post - launch.   What I DO care about is how long it will take Funcom to deal with them.  Something tells me that Funcom aint going to let these issues drag out for a long time on their new flagship MMO.  Even Blizzard couldn't nail all the issues prior to launch, eventually they nailed such problems over a period of a few months.  Now people look back with "rose tinted glasses" and say how WoW had such a nice launch.

There's no option for those of use who never pre-ordered in the first place.

Anyway, my experiences in open beta have made me question whether a mostly single-player intro is a good idea. Tortage island is so linear and instanced that it makes this seem more like a single-player RPG with some multiplayer elements--a strange blend of Two Worlds, Fable and Guild Wars. Funcom is flattering itself by thinking AoC's gameplay is unique enough to require such a walkthrough intro, not to mention thinking it's good enough to charge a higher retail price in North America and a higher monthly fee in the UK. Too many people will get the wrong idea from Tortage and not be willing to spend their money to see whether Hyboria proper is truly open-ended and lifelike.

Oh, and we're 2½ weeks from launch and numerous aspects of the godawful UI are broken. I thought LOTRO had a barebones UI...there are just some things MMO players expect from their games these days.

The theory of evolution is as much open to doubt as the theory that the earth goes round the sun.

interesting thread, if its this popular based on peoples experience with the awful OB client. then imagine the response when the game releases running with a de-bug patch on FC's proper servers. time to buy FC stocks tbh.

Beta non beta, marketing or not marketing, flop or success....... sometimes i think that we gamers really are giving the Dev a very Hard time.

Have you ever imagine what they have to go thru all these years (abt 5?) for a game to be release?  Is AoC really so bad now compare to VG ?

All of us here is really being burnt by the flops of mmo that have been coming out after WoW, and we hate that company  release another flop where basically most of us is really looking forward to AoC or WAR now for the saving grace in the mmo world.....

But pls... hush hush now.... lets give the Dev in FC just a little bit more time shall we? it's just another another 2weeks more.....

*ps: its also sad that i must first declare that im neither a AoC, WAR, or WoW fan.... zzzzzzz.....

  Outright lie. I have this;

4400+

1.5gb ddr1 ram

7600gt

and I run the game fine on default, 1440x900, with no shadow. I get about 50 fps
