I am a little sand pudding. |
I'm a Malaysian Chinese, and a frequent lurker 'round here. Yes, I dunno why MMORPG.com-ers talk about Asians as if it's like races from another dimension or something, lol. (Hell, Asia is so big. What's with the silly pan-Asian thing?) It's easy to blame "us" just because you played a bad Asian grindfest, but of course we all hate them stupid MMOs with boring droning gameplay. Come on, who doesn't? I don't feel mistreated, I feel isolated. Like how half-baked medieval MMOs would get featured here over the non-translated titles (Uncharted Waters Online, Emil Chronicle Online and Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE, anyone?). It would be nice if the "Asian" side of the community here is more than just digging around in the Open Beta forum for "rare Asian titles". Fun info: Just like high fantasy is being abused as a subject in MMORPGs, so is Chinese wuxia fantasy. Wish they would go further than that. ... more Steampunk MMOs plx! |

It's not easy to effectively govern a diverse crowd of people so I guess the moderators have decided on minimally enforcing rules and intervening in problems only when absolutely required. It sad though, that a site as large as mmorpg.com isn't quelling an old and common problem within forums. |

The first thing coming to my mind is the song from the musical "Avenue Q" "Everyone is a little bit racist". And its true. Westerners are about Asians, Asians are about Westerners asf. On a small scale thats how humans are. I make joke about straights, within limits, and if ppl make jokes about gays (within limits too) I still laugh, even tho I am gay. I try to see this issue relaxed. People always generalize, but as long as its not nasty, I feel its ok, as long as we all can laugh about it together and its not mean. So of course the question "where are the Asians" is "a little bit racist", but not in the mean way. ;) I have a Korean Bother-in-law, does that count? Ok he was born here loves Knödel and Sauerkraut is as German as anyone, heh. Either way in Asia they DO have a different game culture. Being a great fan of Japanese PS2/PS3 games and also of Anime I guess I have a more positive prejudice about "Asian" games, tho I must admit the MMOs from Asia (usually Korea or Japan) are too grind-oriented for my taste. Oh and of course there ARE cultural streams in Europe, America or Asia. Its not to make them all equal, but there IS a certain cutlural gap. I spent a longer time in Tokyo, and boy I DID feel like on another planet! I mean, it was a blast time, and I loved those friendly ppl, I always thought we Westerners could learn a bit from the East about being nicer and stuff. But I wouldnt for the love of god live there permanently. We all have our socializing deep inside, I guess. ;) I always wanted to play a MMO based on the great Chinese stories btw, like Water Margin or Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but in a complex "western style" setting. Those great tales are much to less known in the West yet. |

Anyhow, games like Uncharted Waters Online, Emil Chronicle Online and Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE, peeked my interest the moment SandCastle mentioned them. I wish there were an english client. |

Even if they could read and write English why would they waste their time and money coming here? If you did come to a forum such as this wouldn't you pick one in your first language as well? I wonder how many Americans or Europeans hang out at Japanese MMO websites? Probably somwhere between very few and none, for the same reason none of them are on Western websites. |

Yea as an Asian, sadly I often feel discriminated be it in game or real life. Gaming aside. I love how people always sterotype us Asians as non-english speaking or literate. I once had this european tourist couple from another country approach me to ask for directions. They were speaking really slowly as if i was a R.tard. Their first sentances were " D-O YOO-O-U-UU S-P-EE-E-AK-KKK EN-NN-GGG-LLLII-SHHHH?" Being the good citizen that I am and wanting to leave a good impression of my country, I replied as politely as I could only to be hit by a freight train from the back when they told me they were really surprised that I could converse in their languange. Seriously...WTF?!?!??! Times are changing. Aside from being able to converse in our native "Alien" language, most of us have english as our second language, and in some countries, as their first language. We may not excel, but most of us are able to string a coherent sentance. I also like how I am automatically related to Kung fu and Martials arts just because I'm chinese. I have had people walk up to me and ask me to display some Kung Fu moves. You know how people like to mimic Kung Fu as "animal fighting style". Keep doing that. You continously think you mock our culture but that is not the case. You are the one being laughed at because its funny to us to see a grown man act like a baboon for the sake gaining a few pitiful laughters from his audience. Most Asian feel the discrimination and they want to stop being "Asian". I have had people I know for years and they converse to me in broken-english most of the time. But when they get on vent, they start to fake that aussies accent or try to imitate that American accent so that nobody can tell where they are from. It sounds so weird, so wrong. They are so afraid of being discriminated they would betray their inner self and adopt a fake personna. I once went overseas for a holiday. It was more of an eye opener then a relaxation trip because ....... I was eating at a restaurant with a transparent window, and was seated beside the window. Now a group of kids happen to pass by, they started making faces at my direction and then they toppled the trash can, took the newpaper crushing and hurled it at the window. It got worst when I went to watch the rugby match. You know how common is it for some countries to drink and get high during their games. We happen to run into these bun | |
