Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

o, for awhile I have been searching around from MMO to MMO trying to find a place to call home. I quit WoW after 2 years of playing it and since then have played a huge variety of MMOs including : EQ2, DDO, EVE, Tabula Rasa, and Final Fantasy XI. While I loved LOTRO ( I am still subscribed to it) and disliked many of the other MMOs I could not find a good MMO to fill the gap in my life!

I was trying to find a huge open world mmo that did not have many instances and was more open world dungeons and such. I wanted none-instanced housing, cool races, cool classes, fun combat and good crafting.

Then I remember Vanguard and remembered that it promised many of the things I wanted. but then I remember how horrible it was on release...but meh I said and bought the game anyway.


So 2 weeks into the game and I am pretty damn surprised! Crafting is way more fun then in any other MMO i have played you actually have to think about how to do it! Also there is crafting gear to improve your crafting, now THAT is cool.

The Races...I wish they were as good as the crafting. Sadly they all look the same with the same bodies..but meh they are kind of cool....

Sadly they took out a lot of the customization features for performance issues but they state they will be adding them back..but until they do customization sucks.

Diplomacy is pretty cool I don't do it much but its a fun little side thing..some people ONLY do Diplo O.o Its pretty cool though. But anyway...

Why do people still hate this game? It isn't nearly as bad as what people say or think it is! I am totally not biased at all....I came into this game thinking I would quit within a couple hours of playing..but to my surprise I actually like it.

It is by no means perfect, far from it actually. The animations are pretty bad but they say they are revamping them in GU6 which is a couple months off. There is still a huge lack of end game content, some mobs aren't balenced correctly so they are pretty easy, and some other things.

I just think this game got such a bad rap when it was released and now everyone thinks its the worst MMO out there..and it's not!

I just think more people need to give this game another chance..they are constantly updating it to improve performance and add new content. So give it another go >: D

I liked the game a lot but the hard drive hitching is what killed it for me. Random stuttering while running around just got on my nerves.

No one to play with = no fun, everyone likes it for a few weeks but it's a done deal, and will never have many.

The problem is that the game did use to be "bad". However, since the SOE take over the game has improved substantially. The problem is the people who hate on the game took the games "failure" too personally back then and will hate on it forever.

Once they get a trial client out (which is coming soon) people will be able to try the game out themselves.

Well, you already said about everything that has to be said about it.

And my maxlevel character is still very busy to get his gear, so I really wouldnt call it lack of endgame content. The raid dungeon is a pretty tough and challenging place, one error and you wipe again. Meaning, with less experienced or undergeared people in the group, you cant help but wipe quite a lot. And theres the overland raids and a couple of very long questlines like Swamps, Rhaz Inkur, Crypts etc that also take a lot of time.

The main problem of the game is the relatively small dev team (25 guys or something, compared to 200 or so when the game came out) and the relatively low (but so far quite stable) population.

Since they merged servers I guess the population has gotten better.I see a good bit of people running around the game. But perhaps thats just around the newbie areas.

I just love how huge the game is..3 massive continents and just so much to explore...

I hope the game gets popular again : /

when will they release a trial...

Yeah it could be a good game now.  Sad part is there's hardly anyone playing it.  They really missed their window.

And the crafting system is actually pretty sucky IMO, mainly because the only way to level up is to make a crapton of useless items over and over and over and over... You don't even get crafting xp from making something useful.  That's just backwards.  They should have just made it take a LOT longer to make something useful, but a crafter should get all their xp from crafting something useable in the game.

Oh lastly the small dev team is just one more reason it probably doesn't have a future.  =(

The crafting is pretty good considering its not just "Gather materials and click button to make things" you gotta actually think about kind of strategize how you wanna make your items...

I tried to look for some interesting videos on youtube for Vanguard but they looked pretty mmo samey. Though, maybe videos aren't the best indicator.
