Posted this in a previous topic - but seemed more fitting for it to have it's own area for more specific and helpful answers.

put game in windowed mode....still nothing.....

I have posted this problem about 6 times on the official forums and a couple of times here at mmorpg.com (where I won the beta key) also emailed tech@ageofconan.com twice and nothing....I have seen others with this problem no answers posted......
please help.....My drivers are up to date....every other game I have runs fine.....

amd +3500 2gigs ram 256mb x850xt

I know its an old system but low settings should be doable..it meets minimum....

I'm having the exact same problem - my flashes are black, not blue. I've searched far and wide for a solution for this, tried running windows - with all manner of resolutions. I'm not able to see any start up graphics/introductions and i can click the mouse till it reaches what i assume is the login screen. This then loads the nice snowy mountains in the background with some floating tree's and some spazzy blue expanding thing, i will post a picture - this is utterly unplayable.

I'm using the same graphics card as you are, Ati Radeon XT 850X 256mb - starting to wonder whether this is a graphics card issue.

AoC support forums are utterly useless as i can't log into them even after registering.

this here is what it all looks like after clicking past the black line crap.

Very Frustrating.

mmm i tried with my un-updated driver (since whenever i last updated it) and after it being horrible at first i updated tooooo... well, the files called "8-5_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_63030" have no idea how to find the version number out - not too technically minded :)

I admitt that this game will give you the need to upgrade your computer, but man it is WORTH IT.

EDIT: oops, forgot the question..that screen looks like a direct x problem, update that.

My system is above the required level asked for - well above the minimum so in "theory" there shouldn't be a problem. I had the same problem with distortion on an older graphics card with the might and magic multiplayer - it was fixed with a patch eventually. Wondering if i'm going to have to wait for a hotfix/patch to fix this horrible issue.

Edit: The directx should have been updated upon installation. + i've been running Dx9 without problems for quite a while, and dx10 isn't an option for my card. Have been thinking about buying a new graphics card - as i foresaw i would enjoy the game more if i had a decent fps rate at high/mid graphics levels.

ok, so you've basically just told me that you are NOT using the hotfix driver.

remember to use a program like drivercleaner to get rid of any old lingering driver componantes after un-installing.

I'm ASSUMING that the 8.5's have the same problem that has lingered in the last few Catalyst builds. This hotfix version is for the 8.4's....I'll check out what's being said about these new 8.5's and see if there is an issue with them, and if there's a hotfix for them yet if there is.

that hotfix seems to be only for the AGP cards - i should have mentioned my card is PCI-E

I understand, but direct x has some tweaks that can be made, could be one of these you need to do with the hardware you have.  One I have seen that causes this is the sound in direct x.  change that one notch down and it could work.

Hi there, nothing to do with drivers

To do with the fact the game starts with shader version 3, your card only does 2. See my last post, describes how to fix this issue! :) enjoy.

Go to C: documents and settings/user/local settings/application data/funcom/conan/prefs
(You must enable "view system files" under folder settings to see the path)

You will see one or two xml files named prefs_1, prefs_2. Open these files in notepad and search for

"RenderSetting_ShaderModel" you should see the following:

"RenderSetting_ShaderModel" value="2" (2 may be replaced by -1 on some older x800 cards)

change the value so you end up with ..... "RenderSetting_ShaderModel" value="0" in both files and save.
