I don't know what sort of system you have but some things I found to be helpful:

Turn shader model version down and grass off.

Shadows from character only.

Water from ground only.

And the thing that made the biggest difference, nearly doubling my fps was:  System Memory Texture Cache - turn it all the way to the max.  I was shocked at the difference that made to my performance.

These things are all in Video settings, Advanced.

Help someone who can not return the favor.

While I know this may sound like a crazy idea... go to Video Options and change them to Medium. It might take a few for them to load, but give it at least 3min. Once your computer has stopped grinding away go to Advanced Options and turn shader model to 2.0. If it still lags turn your view distance down to lowest possible setting and do the other things  Signe  suggested.

My computer is mid range and I had assumed Low meant it'd work smoother. That was wrong and I heard someone else over talking in guild who suggested to try Medium as there have been some known issues with Low.

i need to know your video options and your OS to really help you out but ill get started without that information.

1. If you have Vista make sure you have Service pack 1  installed. If you got the OS 5 months ago you have it. If not, you may need to download it at microsoft.com

2.  What is your video card? What kind is it? What is the specs? Do you have uptodate drivers on it?

3.  How much RAM do you have? I know they said 1 is the bare minimum but i would say 2 gigs of ram should be minimum

4. In your video options turn off shadows, bloom effect.

I really need to see your specs tho

If you're using a laptop then turning the System Memory Texture Cache up all the way to max is especially important.  It's the reason they included it in the options.
