For me it depends on the game lore and gameplay. AoC with Happy Tree Friends gfx is kinda.. funny when I think about it

All I ask for is an attempt at realism; DAOC-level graphics being good enough for me.  When I see a cartoonish game, I immediately wonder if the game is going to be dumbed down for younger players.

I Voted cartoon but the thing is that it's not the graphics that make the game it's the gameplay. And also there are plastic realistic graphics that is just horrible. For me cartoon or realistic graphics is no big deal. As long as the game is fun I'm happy.

I like realistic graphics but the problem is that they always look like fail. In that sense I prefer a game to look cartoon like yet still believable. It can have pretty graphics but aren't going for the "Feels like Real Life" look. In fact I do tend to find games that look real to be very very creepy and I don't enjoy them or get into them as much. Perhaps this comes from my love of cartoons and anime? Anyway, I prefer cartoons over all as long as it is not 2D. Somewhere between WoW and LOTRO? Yeah, that is about the right mix for me. :D

Good topic thought, it is interesting to see peoples ideas. Near impossable to flame as well. The poll would of done better had it had a "Mix" vote option however..

I prefer stylized.

Realistic graphics are always imperfect by definition. If your goal is an illusion of reality then you are doomed to fail - it is never ever going to be perfect.

Stylized (or cartoonish) sets its own goals and therefore is able to accomplish them. A stylized art direction may be 100% "perfect" with very very low technical requirements. For example, Pacman graphics are perfect as they are - any attempt at making them more realistic or detailed (except increasing raw resolution) would only manage to lessen the visual impact of the original.

I think making a game with too cartoony graphics targets kids, so therefore you lose your mature audience and good community. most everyone ages 15+ have no desire to play with 8 yr olds on games.

Graphics DO matter, when i'm choosing game. I prefer realistic graphics. I want to enjoy the world with my eyes. It's almost as important as gameplay. But even if game has superb gameplay, bad graphics will be a problem. They create atmosphere. I can't merge into to the gamewordl if it looks unrealistic, no bad artstyle. Dividing graphics into two sections is a bit too narrow point of view. Personally i'd love to have same kind of graphics like in Oblivion.

I like whatever best suits the game personally.  Some games are just better suited to "realistic" graphics while others are better suited to "cartoon" graphics.

This poll should probably have a "middle-ground" option.
