I still dont see Star Trek being MMO friendly.  The format and expected experiance just doesnt lend itself to solo/group gaming very easily.  What I am waiting to know is how starship operations work in a group MMO setting.  I figure its one ship - one owner type play.  Away Teams will be fine, but what of the space experiance?  I just hope it favors its ready made audiance, the Star Trek fan, and not try to break records in subs to players that dont care about its lore.

Stargate Worlds, however, has a show formula that begs to be a MMO.  You can solo or group to run adventures instanced in the gate.

It's perfectly feasible if they follow a similar plan to something like Puzzle Pirates and use a load of NPCs.

You want to take your nice shiny Miranda class ship out? No problem... you get a crew comprising Ensign Bolian Newb, Ensign Vulcan N'wb, Ensign Klingon K'Nughb, and so on... until you can fill the positions from live players... or you can just take the NPCs and go touring. They'll suck compared to real players, but they'll at least get you from A to B if you're ferrying stuff.

You need more xp in Astronavigation? No problem... sign on aboard the USS Newb Cruiser under Captain James T. Newb, take your bridge position and practice until you're ready for a real vessel.

It's already working for Puzzle Pirates, why wouldn't it work for a Star Trek MMO?

I'd love it work this way, for my guild to be the ships crew. Lots of raid-type missions that improve our rating with Starfleet and allow us a better ship. For soloing I could beam down to wherever we are currently in orbit or get a shuttle for places further away.

Let's have more of these rumor news posts, MMO gossip is cool :)

http://trekmovie.com/2008/01/14/perpetual-looking-to-transfer-development-of-star-trek-online/

It's entirley possible for a game developer to purchase not only the copyright liscense of a franchise but to purchase all pertaining assets of a copyrighted liscense that includes any concept art and code and with perpetuals version of star trek online that would include a nearly finished game.

As for the ticker on cryptics site, i have a funny feeling it's counting down to the opening of the official star trek online site http://www.startrekonline.com/

Don't know if you can run it?

Cynical? Me? Never.

It shows a planet blowing up. How is that a prelude for Star Trek?

Ah..STO was hardly a nearly finished game, it was not even close to a beta release, they were still in the design phase on much of it.    You would also have to throw out a lot of the code as Darron Stinnett had them going down a path to oblivion with his introverted ideas.

You mean you haven't seen Generations? (The Veridian system being obliterated by the forced nova of it's sun, taking the crashed Enterprise-D with it)

Or the TOS episode "The Doomsday Machine"? (Which destroys planets then uses the remains for fuel)

Or the Species 8472 Planet Killer (From the Voyager episode "Scorpion" - capable of channeling fire from bioships into a beam powerful enough to destroy a planet)

It's as Star Trek as anything else space-related. Granted it'd be nice to see some actual Trek ships or something, but it's at least a start, and as others have said it's directly from the Perpetual concept art.

Personally, I think it might be the prelude to STO. But another little voice says, "it might be just the artwork from one of the people that Cryptic has signed on when Perpetual fell apart."

Need to squash little voice

After looking closely at the pic from all the links provided, I believe the planet is not blowing up.  The perspective is from within a Planet Ring at close up.  Look at the planet beyond and it seems to be whole.  A planets ring is made up of small asteroids circling the larger body.

But, I believe most are correct here. Speculation and rumor seem quite clear here.  Cryptic has STO.
