Just wanted to post this quick link. Might be informative to some of you melee types.

Great read... Kinda sad for the game though.

My dog ate your homework.

oh shoot!

this is such pointless nitpicking.

this is so last-gen complaint man. who needs an actual working rpg system when you've got your teh awesomes graphics and boobs and Conan ffs!

/sarcasm off

you know, i'm really beginning to believe what i said a while ago as an exaggeration - that probably not one of them FC guys actually sat down and wrote a rpg system document for the game. I now truly believe that they've been writing stories and making models for the past five years without giving more than a passing thought to the core gameplay design of the game - you know, the thing that makes everything else tick.

What is more shocking is that this is their second MMO.... What gives? This is like building a house by getting all the workers together, buying the materials and drawing concept art for kitchen decoration and saying -
"ok guys, lets all do our best - and don't worry about there being no architectural plans or anything, the statics and plumbing are soooo boring anyway and we'll think about where to put it after we paint the house and sell it...." This really is like children playing at architecture, piling bricks and decorations on top of each other and being all shocked when the thing collapses.

On a positive note... you can now disguise your guardian in light armor and a polearm and look just like a TOS without any penalties.

I must say I am shocked. I am a great fan of the game, it works and is fun but this . .

So it only works because people have different health.

Atm increasing attributes appears to do nothing in regard to to-hit, damage, crit chance, fatality chance, increased resist. Actually the only thing you _can_ se they do is to increase health, stamina, mana which makes str and dex relatively useless.

FunCom has already admitted that they dont work as intended. . .

Now armors seems to have no game effect either.

Is the entire background system broken and is that why funcom has stated they will never ever reveal how it works?

I think the only way funcom can save face here is to come out and be honest and show how the system works and explain themselves. For example if armors works like in D&D then they dont mitigate damage but make your more difficult to hit giving mobs a greater miss chance. Is that the case here?

The sad thing a system that works like what we suspect here would actually be ok for a mmo, but then the developing company should be honest about it and not try and make it look like it has traditional rpg stats.

It is totally obvious that AoC is suffering from an unbelievable lack of pure game design considerations, planning, forethought or... almost anything pertaining to game design tbh.

WoW is really crappy in that regard as well. It's core RPG system is simplified to the extreme and thus suffers terrible problems with balancing down the line when it comes to particular classes and skills. Conceptually it's endgame does not, in fact, exist. There is no real point to playing the game at all when you think about it. "skills" (like weapon skills and crafting) with their ratings are obviously a leftover from some earlier version of the system - like an appendix that someone forgot to remove before the release.

WoW's is one of the worst core RPG systems that I've ever had the misfortune to experience (and I've played and studied those A LOT). It is haphazard, badly thought out, unfinished, unimaginative and overly simplicistic at its very core.

I really never thought I'd see something EVEN WORSE in AAA title...

Want examples of excellent, well thought out RPG systems? EvE online and Guild Wars. And it paid off really well to their creators. Those games wouldn't be even remotely as successful as they are now were it not for their marvelous core RPG system designs.

(core RPG system = stats, skills, crafting and combat. The way the game describes characters and determines outcomes of their actions)

/edit

Oh lol, I'm sorry! Didn't detect the irony there! (Lol, that's what you get from writing at 3am and being really pissed off) Sorry again - the reply is obviously directed at the "go play wow, noobcake" guy who is bound to show up anyway.

Cynical? Me? Never.

Call me a cynic, but I feel if a game doesn't show you how your gear interacts with your character its because it doesn't. Just like in EQ where stats are close to worthless, and AC is highly overrated. EQ has never been forthcoming on how AC affects mitigation.

EQ2, WOW, DAoC and other games don't hold back why would any other games? Simple, because its borked.
