Hey there, I'll try to make this a quick read. Couple of questions about how to enjoy eve. I've tried to get in to eve on 2 occasions, both times I cancelled before I got to the one month point. I've only played more theme park style mmo's before, like AO, WOW and currently AoC, but deep in my soul I've wanted a real sandbox pvp based mmo with loot, intrigue and the such.

My problems with ever where these:

(a)I felt very alone in cold dark space with no avatars and lots of low population systems. In some ways I felt like eve was the loneliest mmo I'd played.

(b)I found the combat to be really boring for my tastes, being basically just automated attacks that you watch and the agent missions to be equally boring. I am not even going to get into mining.

(c)The UI seemed overly complex too me, with submenus upon submenus making it difficult to navigate and  more complex then it should be to master.

Never the less the idea of pirates, con artists, huge intergalactic wars, fleet battle, being looted (yes I mean losing MY stuff), spies, betrayal, all the good stuff eve is known for have lingered in the back of my mind calling me to some day return to eve. I am currently playing AoC, which is fine and good (not looking for an AoC flame war) but I want something else to spice up my life; some freedom. I really want a game where you write your own destiny, do what ever when ever. I believe that EVE is the best mmo on the market, at least philosophically, I just wish I could enjoy playing. My question to you is can you suggest any ways to enjoy eve, are there things I am overlooking, does it get alot better? My last attempt at playing eve was around a year ago, how are things now? What suggestions do you have for me to better enjoy eve?

Thank you

Currently playing: AoC
EVE-Undecided
WoW-retired
AO-retired

Hey,

I am much in the same boat as you ive been back 3 times now, and only recently decided to give it another go.

I am no vet nor expert but my angle of trying to get more out of the game and understand it etc was to find a corp (on vent) that could help me and guide me.

Im only 2 days into my 3rd attempt at the game and have had the account for over 4 years so some of the hard learning skills have been trained thank god.

But yer thats my suggestion dude - get into a good corp that can help you etc.

Lets see how long i last this time.

Hope you and me both get something out of it, these fantasy kiddy mmo's (WoW, conan, etc) are killing me.

Good luck

The combat because lots more fun when you fight against other players.  Its the risk of loss that gets you, combat actually meaning something.  that and min/maxing ships means you may be working at max cap and need to manage the systems on the fly.

Sadly, this game isn't for everyone.  All those aspects you look foward to are great, but that doesn't mean the game is for you.  EVE is a niche game, its got some really fun aspects, its AMAZINGLY put together and wonderful overall, but its just not for everyone.

Retired at 45, are you?

*sniff, sniff*

welcome to the boards first off, i wont automaticaly assume you post this to get crumbs from the cookie monster gallery.

EVE is a multiplayer experiance, solo runners are going to get bored unless you find inventive ways to entertain yourself or you simply like hi tech solitude. As a solo player you will in not impact EVE in any way, however where numbers matter, if your into seat of the pants lag fights eagerly waiting to see which blob survived the first 25 seconds of the encounter then EVE is for you.

Combat is on the rails, flight on the rails, both boring as hell. blobs are the only way you will do anything in EVE, aside from gate ganking if thats to your taste. The ui in eve is simple, yet poorly made, its not hard to learn and the only complicated thing in EVE is learning the right skills to take on your first go around. Like any ui in any game you will get used to it, there is nothing steep about it, though those with low iq's and those that frustrate easily will tout how steep EVE's learning curve is, if you can play WOW, you can play EVE.

The population in EVE is "lord of the flies" oriented, meaning if your not in a corp, regardless of alliance, you will be attacked and destroyed, if you venture into low sec for whatever reason solo, you will be destroyed no questions asked, if you go anywhere double ought, and are solo you will be destroyed, if you fly something snazzy in hi sec odds are you will be suicided and destroyed. i think you see the theme here, as the *ahem* hardcore eve players so proudly fluff, this is a pvp game. i think you get the point, get in a corp, with alliances or suffer the consequences. there is no "we will escort you from controlled space" and the giggle squads kill because they can.

EVE has the best graphics in space this side of nothing. Nothing can compare to some of the ships against backdrops etc, really stunning, but this doesnt make up for all the failings. EVE is coming out with some type of avatar system but this was created due to the voiceful few in EVE that wanted it, the implementation leaves little to the imagination and is certainly going to piss off those hardasses that wanted it and wont be pleased by the limitations i am sure it will have.

There is intrigue, there is political unrest, there are deals made and lost amongst the corps, sadly the devs are up to their collective elbows in all of it, i quit after the first were caught, i cant play agame where the biggest cheats and influencers are the devs themselves. Quite a few  forgave, many left, those with time invested in the game and weak were unable to walk away for whatever reason, again if you OP can handle intrigue and excitement  like this, then EVE is for you.

EVE is a small MMO, always will be, simple, hard and cold.

can you smell that?!!...............there is nothing quite like it.....................the smell of troll in the morning............i love that smell.

Jesus is the Sun of God

Basically you need a corp really to do anything, you need gangs to survive, you need gangs to do anything. You need gangs. You are a cog in the machine, but what a cog you are. The adreniline you get from a match is incomparable to PVP in any other game. You care about yuor ship because you paid a bit of money on it, you have heart attacks if it ever goes under a certain amount of armour or structure. Basically EVe is an experience you will never have in any other game.

Ask some of the Vets about B.O.B corp. and see if this helps your decision.

It can be a lonely world. It's best to find a good corp with similar goals to yours to work towards, unless you really want to be the privateer type pilot.

(b)I found the combat to be really boring for my tastes, being basically just automated attacks that you watch and the agent missions to be equally boring. I am not even going to get into mining.

Though the act of shooting your guns is automated there are intricacies to the combat that take some time to learn like learning your optimal range and how far into falloff you can go. On top pf that there is the right orbiting speeds so that your guns hit and then trying to make your opponent miss. It's more strategic than watching cooldowns and knowing when to blow your cooldowns.

Agent missions can be boring but they are a great way to make money in relative safety. ANd yeah mining is boring as hell unless you happen to be one of those that really enjoy it. I am glad there people that do though :) Personally I can;'t stand mining. Thanks to mining in beta I almost never bought the game. When I did buy it at launch I made it a point to never ever mine no matter what. It's great that you don't have to though

(c)The UI seemed overly complex too me, with submenus upon submenus making it difficult to navigate and  more complex then it should be to master.

The UI is complex but it needs to be that way.

The only real suggestion I have to you is to figure exactly what it is you want to do in game and go do it. Set your goals and find others with the same goals and work together. Without something to focus your time on the game can be extremely boring, but once you have a set goal the game becomes very fun.

Thank you

I hope some of what I have said helps you out.
