From release it has changed.  The most important changes are it no longer crashes and the performance is much better.

Other significant changes are the addition of the rift system which allows you to quickly get to the main quest hubs from any location and rentable flying mounts that get you the last bit of distance quickly.  So if I'm in Kojan with my lfg tag on and someone invites me to a group in renton keep I'm only maybe 10 minutes away.  If my recall is up it could be as fast as 2-3 minutes.

There are countless other changes but those two alone make a world of difference, making the game more accessable and more fun.

It isn't perfect for sure but if you want an open world, deep gameplay with good variety and are able to tollerate minor bugs and aren't completely obsessed with animations or some graphical detail it is a good game with a lot of depth and the devs seem to make it better every patch.

And the game is very friendly concerning the creation of characters.

Sure, the avatar variations are not too great but they aren't bad, either.

Concerning those who like to try different characters before settling on one, each race starts in a different area. You don't have to go thru the same stuff again unless you pick the same race.

I tried WoW (like it but bored now), AoC (great combat but lacking something), and LoTRO (no meaningful PvP to add that feeling of danger) but really enjoy VG.

The game is way better than it used to be and it's now my favorite mmo.  IMO it's the best mmo on the market right now.

VG has always been at its core a great game, so many people have said it has huge potiential.

What it lacked was performance and polish, and lots of.

Since release and SOE purchasing the game, this has been happening, gradually tweaking and improving VG, its now at a state where its a very good game.

The trial island will be available within a month or so and VG should gain a lot of new subscribers, its already had a huge population boost from returning players (free month thing they did).

The island is looking very good, step by step introduction to VG and new players. They are also polishing the 10-20 level areas again, some of these are fantastic places to level.

If you have a descent enough system (nvidia 7800+), this game will run well on medium settings, or nvidia 8800 will run well on high settings.

Still some lag in certain places but as a whole performance has greatly improved.

Game play is much like a cross between EQ1 and WoW/EQ2, levelling difficulty is also inbetween those games, its not as hardcore as EQ1 but not as easy as EQ2/WoW.

Also 3 sphere really helps longivaty of the game and multiple starting areas helps with creating ALTs as there is a LOT of lore in every starting area. Three continents means it will take many ALTs and many hours to burn through it all.

Hope that helps

Resubscribed myself after free welcome back month. Best MMO out there imho - and it probably will get better and better.

In the 4 weeks i ve been playing my servers population (Xeth) at least duplicated and generally if you read the user reviews on several websites you can see how good the latest player reviews are.

I try to gauge the population every now and then with filtered searches (since 40 is the max shown) . Minimum would be around 600 on xeth now and primetime I estimate at 1000-1200 Players.

Also the game is absolutely gorgeous - haven t seen as beatifull architecture and landscapes in any MMO.

You could spend weeks just nonstop sightseeing.

Gear looks awesome too and plenty of options so far.

Performance for me is good in High detail besides in cities.

In the wild i get 30-40fps - cities 15 with some hitching.

My rig is pretty old besides the vid card. 3ghz P4 HT with 2gb RAM and Nvidia 9600GT.

Community is one of the best i ve seen extremely helpfull and mature, just don t mention your  WoW Hunter

Only thing I can t judge about it yet is mid/highlevel content. Highest toon lvl20 but there s so much to do with Diplomacy and a Good Crafting system.

Grab it for 4$ on ebay - you wont  regret it.

Lets face it, MMOs today are turning into single player console games with a chat box included.

Pvp server is still a ghost town unfornately, which is sad because I had a good time pvping in Vanguard.
