These are every officially stated Race by Jack Emmert:

Human
Klingon
Andorian
Ferengi
Gorn
Bolians
Vulcans
Tellarites
Tholians

On top of that you will also be able to make your own races, meaning on top of nine preset races you also get to make any unique ones you want to!

Umm your joking right? While it would be a very interesting aspect I'm not sure Star Trek would fare well against my unique space fairing race of fire breathing dragons, oh wait.. no must have elves/dark elves  (think of how many Captain Drizzt's we could have! )

Once again I think it would be a great idea for another sci-fi game (like maybe EVE ) But it just doesn't seem very Trekie, unless they tightly controlled what unique races would be possible.

To learn how to use a sword, one must first master when to use a sword.

That would be terrible.

Often elves forsake intimate relationships with humans, denying love, because they know, logically, that it can not be, in the frame of elven time, a long-lasting partnership. Alas, a philosophy doomed to mediocrity. We need to be reminded sometimes that a sunrise lasts but a few minutes. But its beauty can burn in our hearts eternally.

I think he said if you make first contact with a new race you could get to design them.

I think you mean "species".  Human is one kind of species that consist of many races who are all closely related genetically.  When you speak of Beings from totally different origins, or planets in this case, it is unlikely that they would share very close genetic characteristics.  This would define them as species and not races.

Just food for thought

I don't think all of those races will be playable races. I really don't see the Gorn or the Tholians as playable races. They may be encountered in the game but you won't get to play them. The rest of the race I think will be.

While in RL I agree, there is evidence in the ST universe that all humanoids are all the same species.

Here comes some serious ST nerdiness...readers beware!

Aside frome the fact that Spock was half Vulcan and half Human there were others.  There was also Belana Torres half Human and half Kilngon and all hot Latina on Voyager (even pregnant).  Also on Voyager there was that little girl that was half alien half Red Headed Step Child.  A role she played again on Reba.

Let's not forget that Bill Shatner tried to have sex with every alien chick that popped on the show.  Every episode was like watching beastiality porn on the internet.

Now as many times as I have tried to procreate with chimpanzies, there has been no offspring yet.  I'll have to keep trying.  The point is that since this primate is our closest evolutionary twin and yet no offspring can be produced, the fact all these ST species can blend and procreate means they are actually all the same species and just different races.

Plus there was this episode on STtNG

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chase_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation)

This episode explains that a previous humanoid species spread their DNA to the galaxy and we are all the spawn and same species of it.  I imagine that episode drew heat from creationists.

Yay!!! I win a no prize...

Very good!  I'll buy that.  Obviously this issue has come up before with the writers of ST and this is their answer as to how all these different species are procreating.  Being that this is the ST Universe I'll just leave it as pointed out.  All life in the ST Universe are races.
