I've been debating for a good while now (probably a year or so) about starting up EVE Online. From what i heard about the game, i knew that it would be daunting to start and get into.  But i play Final Fantasy XI, so trust me, i'm all about daunting. (Tell me a game you spend 18 hours on a single monster and that's a loss).

When i start a game i always rank it based on a few things.  The mechanics, the graphics, the point of the game, and most importantly, the community.

The Mechanics - The mechanics in this game are about as complex as you're going to get.  I read a lot on EVE but let me tell you, reading doesn't help =).  It's one thing to read about a game it's another to try and sit down and actually learn it.  The way you travel is (at times) a bit time consuming in a, what feels to me, needless way.  The learning curve on the ins and outs of the game is sharp to put it easily.  It takes some time getting used to it but after about 3 hours, the penny's dropped on the basics of travel and how everything works. (The Corporation aspect still confuses the hell out of me).

The Graphics - Plain and simple, beautiful.  No one with a bit of sense can argue the graphics are stunning.  Even on my piece of crap computer they look beautiful and somehow, everything runs smooth as silk.  This doesn't make a game alone, but it sure as hell doesn't detract when you are staring a beauty.

The Point of the Game - So far, the game seems daunting with so many options that i'm not quite sure what the point is.  I mean, it's one thing to have stuff to do, it's another to have a reason to do it.  I've not reached that point in the game yet where i've found the point.

The Community - To me, this is where the game failed miserably.  And i mean, miserably.  Now, before everyone gets upset. I will repeat that i've only played the game for 3, maybe 3 1/2 hours so i could have been on at a bad time but, asking for any kind of assistance as far as information, seemed laughable.  This, unfortunately outshines the 2 people who did help me with little success (I can only absorb so much so fast).  At one point i missed the second person helping me because when i asked a question i got a smart ass reply then the insults started flying towards me.  Mind you, i only asked a question and i was flooded with comments that i wont repeat here.  Just trust me, they were very graphic and was coming from about 10 people who all thought it was just hilarious.  The problem with this is that new people, above any other i think, should be treated with at least minimum respect.  Without us, your game will die. I could go on, but i think my point was made long ago.

Overall, the game seems fun.  It appears to be a lot to take in and trying to read up on it while i play is helping things click a little but i'm still on the fence right now about the game.  The game has a great concept, and i'm hoping to see a little reward for my time spent (i get 14 days to decide) and if i can finally wrap my head around it, i think i may have a new MMORPG (Well, at least until Stargate Worlds comes out ).  Is there any pointers btw that you could give someone?  I've started off doing mining and i did the tutorial quests.  I did the second intro quest and he sent me to a guy who wants me to courier somehing but is too big for my ship. I bought a small expansion thing and upgraded my hull to the level 1 (2 1/2ish hours to level 2) but I'm not sure what i'm doing is right.

Thanks for reading and again, any information. Love to have it =)

?

I had a completely different experience to the game, to be honest.

When I started playing, some of the features were intimidating a first, but I easily got used to it. I thought the controls were ok, considering you are exploring an environment where you have many different directions to go in.

And the community helped me out a lot when I was on. I was surprised to hear the community bad mouthing anyone.

But as far as having a point to doing something in EVE, it is more of a sandbox type game, as opposed to games like FF11 and WoW where you have a fixed line of quests to go on. in Eve, you do what you want.

The overall learning curve isn't that bad if you sit through the tutorial, although I come from AO, where the tutorial is bright blue with hard to see print, so having nice text that I could see along with a voice walking me through the game. made the experience a little more new user friendly.

Groovy.

A man alone, but never lonely

Took me 4 trys over the years to even get a clue to this game. (We all absorb differently) But this last time things fell into place and Eve is the most peculiarly addicting game I've ever played. Why people have to be rude, sarcastic and mean when a new person asks for help is beyond me. Can really turn a person off to joining a game. Did you go into the "help" chat? That acually seems to be void of those rude responces most of the time. Only two months playing this time around so still learning. Hope things go well for you.

My name is Silly Putty in the game. Even though never grouped or joined a corp yet so still mostly a newb.

Unfortunately, there are many people who play the game that have a certain arrogance when it comes to playing.  They feel like they can/should talk down to new players who aren't that knowledgeable about all the "EVE speak" that goes on.  I had a similar experience when trying to get back into the game after buying a new account from a 3 year absence.  Even my basic questions were met with some snotty responses, and many replies included terms I just didn't understand.

It is like when someone who is new to playing a fantasy MMO gets in and asks what kinds of things they might start out doing, and the preson replies with, "Well, are you DPS, tank, or buffer?"  The newbie then says, "I don't understand a word you just said."  Often, an arrogant retort like, "Pft!  n00b!  L2P!!11!" follows.  So, it's not just in EVE, but it does seem like the people playing EVE don't realize others don't have an instant familiarity with it.

However, I have to say that during the course of the 14-day trial, if you take your time, ask plenty of questions, and pay close attention to all the details,...  most any MMO player can pick up the feel and start to develop a comfort for playing.  I think that many are too quick to jump into the game and want "instant action", much like you would get in WoW.  I think that game (WoW) has just ruined the market for no many prospective players.  It's so dumbed-down and honed in on the "instant gratification" people enjoy.  So, when they're given options or forced to be creative, they give up.  But, that's an entirely separate rant...

Good luck in EVE, I've enjoyed coming back so far.  I just hope I can find a good corporation so I can leave the military academy soon...

you asked questions in local chat, or in the 'rookie help' channel that you can't quit when you first start the game?

Let me guess, you rolled a Caldari character and aske dyour questions in the starter corp chat. Caldari noob chat is almost as bad as barrens chat in WoW.

This is purely my guess however.

The Minmatar starter channel is a great place, very helpful people there and very few asses unlike the Caldari one. I don't know what the Amarr and Gallente ones are like.
