Hi guys, I was surfing the web looking for servers, to host a new MMO that I am currently developing and I came across a site called e-games. It seems like they published quite a few free MMO's such as Knight Online. I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of them before. If you have I was wondering what exctly they do when they say "publish" your game? I mean do they take care of hosting, web sites etc...? From what I understand they look after all of it and you just develope the game... if this is true that could be exactly what I'm looking for to host my MMO. So if you know anything about this company please let me know :) ~Stargate005~ |

Basically, yes. I think they'll give you a % of how much it makes too. I haven't tried to publish an MMO through them, mainly because I don't need to, but also because it's a Malaysian company that caters primarily to kids and non-english (usually chinese) speakers. You could contact them though if you were curious. There's one other solution, if you wanted to try to make a profit. The Kaneva Platform comes with an MMO engine already that can handle physics. They also do all customer service and billing for the game. The catch? They take 50% of the profits. But it's an option. |

Thanks for the info :) Ya, I've already looked into the kaneva engine, but I found out if you read the tearms and agreements closely they charge an extra $50,000 for hosting the game if you end up with like more than 5 people playing, and on top of that you have no choice but to charge for your game, AND they also say you can only use their engine... so in my opinion lol, theres just too many draw backs... But I am glad to hear that e-games is an alternative.. if I don't find any well priced servers I may end up contacting them. By any chance does anyone know of companies like e-games that will publish your game for you? Thts the only one of heard of before... Thanks guys, ~Stargate005~ |

Well, it depends. If you intend on charging, you could contact any of a number of publishers. Also depends on where your market is. If it's primarily the US, look into a US based one. Also depends on what kind of MMO you're making. It wouldn't be too far fetched to contact a korean company like Hanbitsoft or something to get your game published either. Tell you what, if you want to discuss it more, drop me a PM with your email addy, or IM contact, and I'll help point you in the right direction. Mainly, away from people like Dave who ruined Mourning (which had so much potential early on, but quickly faded once Dave fed them money to publish). |

I don't think you realize the money and the manpower it takes to make a half-decent mmo. |

Well, that's one of the things I was going to point out. Not neccisarily money (though some DEFINATELY helps), but for sure, TONS and TONS of manhours. So far I've sunk at least 2000 hours into the game that I'm working on, and all I've got to show for it still is a login server, bare basic client (which is 90% network code), and a 500 page design document that's been copywritten. That's with 3 others giving me about that much time as well. So yea, it's definately not easy or quick. If you've got money, or can get funding, then you can at least get team members who are dedicated. Hell, music and graphic artists are pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to find without funding, as they want to get paid regularly. That being said, if you'd like some insight into the process, I'd be willing to share the experiences I've had so far. Maybe I'll post it in my blog. Haven't decided yet. |

With money you can get dedicated people. Without money you have to get dedicated people. Only dedicated people would bother making a valuable effort for no pay. |

Thanks for all the replies guys, I just wanted to say to whoever said that I have no idea how much it costs and that I shouldn't bother, please stop puttin people down because I've already proved you wrong lol. At the moment I already have an engine, the concept drawings, the plot and quests of my world planned out, etc... I mean if I didn't have anything I wouldn't be looking for a publisher right lol? At the moment I'm looking into modelers, which luckily we have 2 of atm, and also some music artists which as brian said are quite hard to find lol. But anyways, I may end up contacting you brian about some publishers but if anyone knows about any Canadian publishers please let me know Thanks again guys, ~Stargate005~ |
