I find it ironic that this games downfall will be its community.  I beta tested this game for a long time,  and actually ran the game quite well with my "gaming" laptop.  Lag and performance was never much of an issue for me.  The gameplay itself was ok.  I was just not impressed and looking for the dev team to stick to their "vision".  It was my own fault for following the game to closely and going to both Fanguards (Vegas and San Diego).

I just believe that all the negative posters and the responding vanbois will ruin the game.  I personally have had strong views against the game mechanics since August , and was constantly told to go back to WoW.  That seems to be the only comeback from the supporters.  Funny thing is I don't like WoW too much.

I now think it is a good thing that Sigil is closing their official forums.  They would have turned out worse than WoW's.

I made some negative posts and comments about the game but I will no longer continue to do so, as I actually respect Sigil and hope the game improves over the next few months.  If AoC, LOTRO, and Warhammer don't pan out, I may be back.

I just hope the communtiy improves.

For a game with little PvP draw, a massive world and a raid-oriented high-end game in PvE, you basically need a lot of dedicated PvE players to make it work.

There is a critical number of players, and the bad word-to-mouth propaganda Vanguard is currently receiving, whether justified or not is not mine to decide, might well cause this number to not be reached on the servers.

So, in all honesty, I understand a certain aggressive behaviour on the side of the fans, cause bad press and bad posts dont only hurt their feelings, which isnt really an issue, but hurt their chances of getting a game populated enough to enjoy.

I mean, every MMO lives from its community, and if Vanguard develops too small a community to really allow raiding etc. at the high end to work out, it will fail, even if its the best MMO ever......... simply because there arent enough players around.

Other MMOs died from that, when even the most avid fans have to admit that lots of content, while there, isnt doable for lack of players.

So yes, flaming the haters creates a bad atmosphere, but if the bad reputation of the beta spreads without any voices to counter it, it could very well happen that the servers become too sparsely populated by the end of March to really be fun.

Well, a gear-based game with a tough level process and a definite forced grouping... what did you expect with the current state of the genre? The times of EQ1 are long past, I wouldnt expect a less egoistic behaviour than in the WoW newbie zones for now. That ll be better in the final, when people actually have to live with the reputation they earn.

I think Khaunshar makes a good point. For all that any Vanguard critic is labelled a hater and flamed with cries of "go back to WoW" and "buy a decent computer" - it is aggression born of fear.

The fact is this game isn't finished and almost certainly won't be by release  - and that's going to hurt sales. Fewer players means smaller community and less profit for Sigil.

But I think the fear is unfounded. I mean if total lemons like Horizons and DnL can manage to stay afloat, Vanguard should at the very least keep running, even if it doesn't become a huge success. So my advice is to chill.

I would actually think scaring off people now is doing Sigil a favour. Let the fanbois enjoy the paid beta and don't try to attract others til later. I was there at EQ2's launch and I was very unimpressed with all the bugs and gameplay problems. So when WoW came out and I played it and found it be a finished product - my choice was easy. And I never went back to EQ2. But if I hadn't tried it at launch I might have tried it later, after they'd sorted out all their problems and played for a while.

No offline game developer would try to release an unfinished game and say "Go ahead and start playing - we'll patch for the next six months to fix the problems" and it's insulting to expect mmo players to be happy about it.

But I don't think the Vanguard community is really that awful. I know the kind of people you're talking about and they're certainly playing Vanguard. But I seriously think they're an unrepresentative minority.

Unrepresentative minority, maybe.

But certainly the most vocal.  And most noticeable.

And when the mob mentality sets in, it may not be pretty.

Its ironic that some who replied to you in this thread are VANBOYS themselves. Anyways i totally agree with you. I was flamed so badly when i posted shortcomings about this game. I got replies like "WOW LOVER F*** OFF". I have stoped caring now. I am no longer posting  or sending any suggestions about this game.

Don't get me wrong - those knobs are definitely not doing Vanguard any favours.

But I suspect that not only are they a minority, but most of them will end up:

  • gimped guildless solo'ers - antisocial tendencies always come out and are never appreciated in guilds, especially in such a group-oriented game;
  • running around on the pvp server as twinked out level 6 characters crying "I'll pwn you wow luvin noobs" attacking every new player as they enter the game;
  • and probably bald, dateless and overly familiar with women of the plastic persuasion.

There are many criticisms that I think could be fairly made of this game - and among those I would count the presence of this sort of player. But if you look at the gameplay style the Sigil developers are aiming for it's all about co-operation. These twats will be marginalised by the real Vanguard community.
