Cause that''s..how I roll.

Hello! I have been going over my carrer choices and I have decided the thing I want to do the most is create an MMO. Now I know this isn't going to be a take a year of college and make a game thing. I am expecting years and years of hard work and many sleepless nights. I am just trying to get a list of programming classes I should take. I know the stuff like C++ and stuff, but some help from the community will really help me! Also any good books on MMO and game design in general I should get?

Along with that I am writing a huge paper on MMOs that I expect to take years. Basically comparing all the games and analyizing everything having to do with them. This is to find out what the players like and dont like, what makes that game work and etc. I plan on going into each game casual and leveling them up casual and then turing around and making a hardcore character and then seeing how much different the game caters to each of them. I hope that makes sense.

Anyways! I am very serious about this and would love all the advice I can get.

Thanks for reading.

"Do not underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups"

well i don't know much about all of the tech stuff you need to learn, but at least your not one of the people that come here and a where to download and instant mmorpg maker that will some how magicly create an mmo without any previous programing experiance.
from what i here around here you are going to need a team of quite a few people that have alot  of exp. and programing knowledge, alot of money for server bills and such, either make your own engine or buy one ( from what i here that can be very very expensive ), and if you get through all that you are going to have to baby sit your game forever and hope that it takes off and you make it big.

Thanks for the reply! As for the team my girlfriend is currently going to college to become a video game artist. The name of the degree escapes me at the moment heh. But yes I realize it isn't going to be easy, I don't expect to dive into MMO right away I know it's smart to do a lot of singleplayer stuff first. I do plan to run my own studio after all said is done, but I'm pretty positive those plans will change

I plan on doing the same, I would like to help create and desgin MMOs, but that might be awhile lol. In college you learn general stuff, from programming (your C++ and maybe more), to level design and character modeling / animation. The industry "standard" uses the Unreal Engine (Cliffy B. you are a god), Maya, and various other 3D programs (any prior knowledge of modeling is very helpfully). Also at the Art Institute they also use the Havok Engine :D my person fav (easy and fun to use!).

Going in knowing your C++ and maybe the basics of any 3D program are major pluses. Some stuff can get well... complicated. Sucks cause DeVry / Ai is very... very... expensive. No matter I will find the money because this is what I want to do with my life, sure I could do networking and make $15+ an hour but I don't want to do that.

Good luck and have fun man, pace your self in your work and don't fall behind and you will be successful in your dreams.

PS. I want to be a World or Character desginer, not that into programming quite confusing imo (if you don't know it or haven't learned it at least).

Well I want to wish you all luck and hope you guys create some of the best MMOs or help developing them. Why? Simple, I look to see other people do well, and the current MMOs are trash right now. So good luck and I hope you both frequent this board along the way!

As a develoer myself, heres a few courses that will be VERY useful. Also, try not tolimit yourself to "MMO". I always wanted to create games, and after getting into this field, I realized that making software, databases, or just maintenance on already developed apps, is just as fulfilling and fun. I currently reside in montreal, and worked at ubisoft for nearly 2 years, until I realized that I wanted something different. Unless your doing lot's of artwork, its almost always the same tasks. Anyways, heres the courses.

C++

C#

Visual Basic (Some companies use this, not a lot but still important to grasp a foundation of it)

ASP.NET

J++ (Again, some companies use this is their java standard)

SQL

Well actually, pretty much anything inside visual studios.

If you have any prior pc knowledge, it helps a little, but programming anything takes a while to become skilled at. It took me about 5 years until I really called myself an "Expert Programmer" where I knew almost every syntax needed. Often enough though, you will need to get some info on some books you have cause you'll have a brain fart or wha not, but it happens to everyone.

Like I said, don't think that making games is all fun and games, its still a whole bunch of code just like any other application. Anyways, hope this helps!

I don't know much about programming, however I do play a lot of MMORPGs. Well, I hope you do great and do make an MMO. However... a lot of the MMORPGs today are just grinding. Of course, one MMORPG I play and still play has little grinding, but still the most fun MMORPG ever. That MMORPG happens to be NexusTK. I suggest you play that game, it has great 2D graphics(Yes 2D, but still very clean). It has a great crafting system and other awesome features. I'm not saying model it after that, but I think it has some neat features that other MMORPGs wish they had =p. But again, good luck and I hope you for the best future.

One thing comes to mind.. Suck it!

I dreamed the same dream you want. First you need to figure out what you want to do, this is sometimes the problem, you fight yourself cause you really want to do both. Either the programming or the graphic creations. Which is why I may return to college to get a graphic artist degree as well.

I however took the programming path because this is really what I wanted to do, create the game not the art. Theres two sides to this, along the courses I took a 3d modeling class for 3dmax Studio and loved it, though I really couldn't fit with the time it took to create a simple model, drove me up the wall.

Anyway I enrolled into ITT Tech under the Software Engineering Technology Bachelors Degree, this covers all the industry standard programming, such as C++/C, JAVA, Visual Basic and General Coding Techniques and Memory Management. It was expensive I won't lie but way cheaper then Digi Pen and Full Sail.

The Game Design Degree they have only focuses on the art of the game, they want to change and expand on this in the future and include some programming as well, but for now there isn't. Thus the games they want to create for their course they look on to use programmers to help code their games successfully.

I have a few good books that are really good for a referance not so much as a teach me teacher book. If you think you will remember every damn part of syntex and won't be successful if otherwise, that couldn't be far from the truth. The trick is to remember the process of how to do this certain aspect and not so much the syntex of everything.

If you are looking for good teach me how to books then I would go with any "Sam's Teach yourself _ in X number of days." Such as...

Next is how to get yourself in the industry this can be tricky. Most go in as testers and work their way up, but it can be done straight on in. You will need some experence with programming in the field they don't really care where as long as it is heavily involved in programming. Two years of misc. programming is normally enough to get you in a minor MMO company, the big dogs want 4-5 years sometimes more of experience. I suggest to hit a smaller studio first then hit the big dogs, but it's all up to you how you want to tackle this problem.

Stick with it and see where it will take you. I wish you the best on your career path. Let me know if you have any other questions, I will answer them as soon as I can.
