Are asteroids the only place you can mine minerals or can you mine plantes also? I have been looking at the game and thinking about getting it. It would be silly if you could only mine asteroids because planets have way more resources on them. |

Yes you can mine planets. Moons, to be axact. But probably not in the way you are thinking.. You must be in 0.3-0.0-space and anchor a pos on a moon with chemicals you want to harvest, then online some harvesters, coupling arrays, silos. Then anchor some more pos and harvest different chemicals, which you put into reactors to make stuff from it, which can then be used in t2 and t1 crafting of many items in game (mostly t2). Its more an Alliance thing to do, but if you trade your stuff with other corps/alliances (which you will have to if you dont own many pos) you can make huge profit of it.. |

What about the planets the moons orbit what purpose do they serve? |

Moons have to orbit round a planet. Thats why there is a star in each system too you can warp to..

Is there any way a player can interact with these planets or are they just there for eye candy? |

You can warp to them.
And you can DIE there.

Most of the planets are in a very young state so there isn't much to interact with. Eventually CCP will be introducing the options to terraform planets which will more and likely provide resources of some type though most of this is on the distant drawling board. As it is planets are mostly used as the location to place an outpost. |
