Nice interview from E for All at MMO Gamer with Mythic's Josh Drescher.

http://www.mmo-gamer.com/?p=295

No big reveals but nice interview about the mindset at Mythic.   Some good explaination on the improved direction to open PvP and more details on the beta closure.  Not to mention what to expect when it starts up again.

I still have high hopes for WAR but its still the same buttom smashing game :(

It has a lot of improvements and deviations from the average button masher, but all in all in the end its just another buttom smashing game.

Meh... I hope for all the Warhammer fans its a great game though, im waiting for WAR 40k! (Am a 40k fan myself)

Favorite moment from that interview:

So, my expectation is actually the percentage of people who go “That’s it, it’s just a WoW clone,” we’re probably going to get their subscription money anyway. They can’t possibly imagine that part of their life going away, they can’t let it go. So, we’ll get their money, and it’ll be like angry, spiteful money, but it’s all the same in the bank.

I give him sooooo many points for saying that. Only because it's rare a developer is honest enough to say "Bugger you, we're getting your 15/mo anyway". It's coldblooded, but he gets points for cojones.

As for the rest..I'm VERY heartened after reading that. I was starting to have my doubts after the previous interviews, but something here just sounds and feels right. Hopefully they'll use the time well, I'll end up in the next beta, and life will rock.

Time will tell.

He is saying it because there is no competition. AoC is M-rated and WoW is 3 year old now. Kids need a new quality game and WAR is the *only* option. He wouldn't be saying that if Universe of Starcraft or WH40KOnline were due q108.

Yes he would be saying the same tune, here's why.   How many of us in search of the "right" mmorpg have been promised the world, payed for the game (40-50$) and a first month subscription only to be ripped off ?

Half the games I have played recently are (free to play) but require real cash for in games items, buffs etc.  These games imo are not mmorpgs but grind fests designed to rake in your cash.

Some of the other attempts at releasing a popular mmorpg such as Wow are laughable, Vanguard comes to mind.

War seems to be throwing out new ideas, concepts and a RvR system that might actually be a blast like in the old days of Daoc.

For anyone who ever experienced Thidrinki bg at lv 24 tell me you did anything but pvp for hours on end on a nightly basis and had the best time doing it.

Mythic knows its bringing alot of cool and new ideas to this game along with some awesome looking classes and RvR ideas.  What game out there right now in development or release has all the concepts War has to offer?  Wow is the only game close to comparsion, and I mean the overall picture of the game not the cloning debate.

I have played Wow from beta, Daoc, Eq1, Eq2, Vanguard, Guild Wars Coh, Planetside etc etc etc.

The one thing is all of these games I truly miss is the experience of running down my oponents in a battleground, dying in massive battles, and standing over my emimies defeated corpses, and capturing a castle Keep or outpost  and becoming the hunted.

I hope they get this game right for all of us.

Brilliant. Exactly why I have my hopes up for this game.

I remember playing DAoC, I was in some BG (don't remember the name, could be the one you mentioned) and I was having so much fun I didn't want to level. Back then they didn't allow you to turn off XP, so I really disappointed when I 'dinged', got killed and was thrown out.

As you say, the best type of PvP game is one where you get to take over keeps, the huge battles of the New Frontiers (the hot tar pouring on our heads!) and using siege weapons to smash down the buildings in DAoC was like no other - really good fun.

first off *disclaimer* I have no opinion on WAR or expectations.. I will wait until I see it to make up my mind.  Now on to something else..

I have one question for you and others that talk about DAoC.

Have you played DAoC since EA bought Mythic?  Have you as an example played DAoC over the last month?

Because if you are basing your expecations for WAR.. off of what DAoC was.. 3 years ago, 2 years ago or even 1 year ago...

You might want to have a more up to date peak at DAoC.  I still play now and then but... well I always feel its best for people to see and make up their own minds..

I honestly hope that WAR gives me a feeling like early DAoC did.. and not like the current DAoC does.

I saw a quote earlier in this thread... He actually said people who will say WAR is just like WoW without seeing it will subscribe anyway?

Why?  If he thinks that can't imagine their life without.. WoW... they'll be over there cuz WoW already exists.

I guess I just mis understood that quote or something..

"So, my expectation is actually the percentage of people who go “That’s it, it’s just a WoW clone,” we’re probably going to get their subscription money anyway. They can’t possibly imagine that part of their life going away, they can’t let it go. So, we’ll get their money, and it’ll be like angry, spiteful money, but it’s all the same in the bank."

I hope that was sarcasm.. because I like sarcasm.

As a customer I don't have to know how to make a better game than you. I just need to know where the cancel button is.

So, what's so bad, or even differeint in daoc now as compared to a few years back? Aside from the fact it's a much older game with most of its playerbase beign old daoc gamers with multip[le 50's, and the fact that players may not enjoy things now that they did during the first year daoc was out? Fill me in :)

Warhammer Beta Tester.

I think WAR is going to be a great success.
