If I download the Trial of the game and start a character. Can I then buy the game and continue that character at any give time? Or do I have to start another character?

You can continue the character on. I would suggest using your trial to at least look at more than one server. I started a character on one (Landroval) and then tried a different one on my last day (Brandywine). As it turned out, as much as I wanted to play on the "unofficial RP" server, there were not that many people on at the times I played. It has been a different story since I got to Brandywine as I am grouping up until I go to bed at 11PM-1AM PST.

When my trial ran out, it booted me from the player world. As soon as that happen I put in my product code, as I had bought the game for the $10, then I logged and was right back where I left my character.
