monthly fee or not does not really matter....but Cash shop would be nice. 2 of the MMOs I played: FFXI and WoW. both have monthly fee.. but people still spend thousands of dollar buying Gil and Gold from online website.. it's a fact. So having a cash shop in a way also limits how much people will seek outside source for their in-game progress (power leveling service. buy account. buy item. buy currency) To me personally.. cash shop IS the balance. They just need to adjust things in a way so that you can either spend time or spend money to achieve the same thing. Cash shop also pulls in the casual player who has money but not the time. I left FFXI because I simply don't have the time to kill 1 monster with 40 other guys so 1 guy can get the gear and the money to keep up with the insane MRT price anymore.. and I do not intent to play another MMO w/o cash shop.. because one-sided MRT is simply ugly. Edit: just saw Travian's ad in the little banner.....I am plaing Travian now >_> <3 their cash shop.. and Cabal as well. Edit II: = paying for a game (or a serial # / CD key rather) is a good way to limit people who want to abuse free software (in game currency seller. hacker. some immature human being who keeps getting banned) = I will pay monthly fee is that's what it takes to keep a MMO running smoothly. = Cash shop: already said in above |

Gamers who use RMT are like athletes who use steroids. |
Cosmetic items(fluff items) would only sell in an item shop if they were cool looking and were not able to be had in game otherwise. Then they become desirable and can be traded in game for coin or items thus becoming a RMT advantage in game. There is no such thing as a benign micro transaction. Just say no to RMT and microtransactions. Subscriptions are the only way to maintain a fair and level playing field. |

| With PvE raiding it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fauning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privelege. - Neanderthal |

I guess if RMT can be dealt with simply by saying "no"... people wouldn't have been suffering the way they did in FFXI for the past 6 years. I am not a fan of "spending 12 hours a day to achieve something" guy anymore.. and I am certainly not up for another "after 6 years, I finally got a Blackbelt for my monk" game. I will admit at this point.. I have more money than time at my hand.. or at least that's how I want it to be... -------------------------------------------- Why can't there be a game that has monthly AND cash shop (that sells more than just a item that change look) at the same time anyway? Just like why is it only people who have the time but not the people who have money can reach far into the game? you can say no to cash shop even if there is one O_O like how you can just say no to RMT even if they obviously exist . non-the-less.. don't really know how Aion is going to be like as far as PvE / Gear / Item play.. I would play any decent PVP game. But I just don't want to see it end up being like FFXI on the economy side. |

I think a great way would be the way WoW does it, I have never played WoW but I like the way they choose you how to pay by card OR by buying a game card. If your a student like myself, paying for a lot with just a part-time job as income game card is way to go as you don't need to be worying about having money in the account or maybe you don't want to pay for am onth when you aren't going to be playing it as much? I really do hope they does otherwise I don't think I will be able to play and will be quite gutted!!! Sorry if this has already been mentioned in someway. |

I could've swore I read somewhere that Aion was going to be free-to-play with an item shop in the American release, but now that I'm looking for it I can't find that anywhere. Anyways, the only reason I was interested in this game was because it was supposedly going to be free-to-play. I've played way too many Pay-to-Play games that simply weren't worth handing over a monthly fee for. This game looks like it might be decent, but not worth a monthly fee, in my opinion. However, with item malls\cash shops\whatever you'd like to call them.. The items they sell shouldn't be for cash shouldn't be anything hugely game altering or giving one person a huge advantage over another, especially since pvp will be a large focus of this game. Giving someone a sword of one-hit-kill for $50 is ridiculous, giving someone +50% to their health is ridiculous.. Cosmetic items, by all means throw them in the mall, even things like exp boosters, go ahead and throw those in there. I like being able to play games for free, especially since It's been a long time since i've bought a game that I didn't regret wasting the money on. If someone else feels that they need to gain exp faster and have the money to blow, by all means let them.. But personally, I'm cheap. I'll gladly play the game it was meant to be played, but only if it's free, and only if the cash shop isn't giving overpowering bonuses to it's buyers. They should be filled with items with enough incentive to want to buy them, things that just make gaming a bit easier or more appealing, but not to break the game and make someone stand out above the rest simply because they can afford it. Until someone comes out with something that's just dripping with promise of being a remarkably ground-breaking game, I'll hold on to my money. -edit- Since so many, remarkably, seem to be a fan of handing over their money to pay monthly for a game though.. My payment scheme suggestion: Offer both subscription and free to play w\ item mall servers. People that want to pay monthly are welcome to, then others like me that don't want to pay don't have to.. wee! -edit 2- Reading back, since some people are asking if there would be any games that us poor people would pay for, I've already decided on mine. If Darkfall is ever released and delivers on it's promises (Goes back to that ground-breaking next generation game I mentioned above) then I'd gladly pay monthly for it, if that's the route they go. That's the other reason I was interested in this game, aside from hearing that it was supposed to be free-to-play. It seemed like a good way to waste time while I wait for Darkfall to be released and I'm expecting Aion to be released, Darkfall I'm still uncertain of, it could very well turn to vapor. |

I still think a traditional subscription method is better for this genre. |

Originally posted by booty I'm sorry but, I'm sick of people who are blinded by their own selfishness and don't understand the significant differences between Free-to-play(w/cash-shop) and Pay-to-play games. If Aion was Free-to-play/Item-mall, then everyone who's aware of those types of games will automatically think it's going to be a low budget, low quality piece of garbage. Considering how much attention and money is being poured into Aion, there's no chance in hell it's going to be F2P. There's no way for a company to make a F2P game look and taste the same as a P2P one, otherwise that company would be digging their own grave because of the massive amounts of money involved in making games would be thrown away. Not saying Pay-to-play games are usually better, since yes, most of them suck because the companies that makes them usually suck.
If you want a F2P game to kill time with, download Shaiya, I heard it's a some-what decent game. And maybe Rappelz.
