Hey guys, I am looking to purchase a new laptop that will not only play games, but will also run CAD and GIS software. Will gaming graphic cards (specifically 8800s) run the CAD programs just as well as the CAD graphic cards? I am hearing different things from different people. Thanks. |

No. But for a CAD program a Laptop is inappropriate unless you are using it to show a customer what changes to thier house would look like as an architect. Also I don't think they make Workstation cards for the laptop. |

Well I guess you are lucky that CAD isn't quite as intensive as other more sophisticated 3D apps. I highly suggest a Tablet PC, they run about the same or maybe 10% more but have way more functionality. The Toshiba Protege M400, and the IBM ToughBook are pretty good Tablet PC brands.

Seems like you should have no problem if you buy one of the higher end gaming laptops by Gateway, Alienware or Dell. (and judging from below, even less expensive laptops can handle it.) By reading the last comment it is not the graphics card you need to wary about but the Ram it said something about Vista needing 2G or higher. On the bright side the requirements for graphics card did not look high at all. |
