CCP has announced the formation of the Council of Stellar Management, the democratically elected advisory council for EVE online.  Complementing the announcement, they have also posted an information page which includes a timeline of important dates.

Reykjavik, Iceland - March 19, 2008 - CCP, one of the world's leading independent game developers, has announced the formation of the Council of Stellar Management (CSM), the first democratically-elected governing body in a virtual world. Its inception marks a decisive leap in the evolution in online worlds, especially in terms of how a publisher interacts with its community. For EVE Online, the council encompasses the next logical step in the complex social and economic systems for which EVE is well known.

"The voice of the player has always been an integral and driving force in the maturation of EVE Online, so the institution of the Council of Stellar Management is natural at this point," said Pétur Oskarsson, CCP Researcher and project lead for the Council of Stellar Management. "The CSM will empower players with a formal communications channel to directly impact the development of their society as it grows more and more advanced."

The CSM will consist of nine representatives and five alternates, each elected by popular vote from EVE's player base, a population of cyber citizens that's nearing the quarter-million mark. The call for candidacy opened March 18 and will be followed by a two-week long election period slated to begin May 5 and ending on May 19. During their six-month term, delegates to the council will deliberate on issues of importance to the EVE community and work with representatives of CCP on the future evolution of EVE Online.

"EVE Online has evolved from an MMORPG to a virtual world with a virtual society. It is our role as its caretakers to evolve our approach as well, through economics research, political science or other aspects of operations or development," said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP. "A democratic election process of representatives is one of mankind's greatest inventions. We are bringing a version of that to EVE now with hope of it allowing us to expand EVE Online in a similar way to what we've seen on Earth."

"Just because it happens to you doesn''t make it interesting"

Sounds exactly like the SWG Senate program.

Same impression I'm getting. A bunch of "nominated" players to "represent" the rest of the playerbase. As to whether they can do so without their own bias is shaky at best. Whether the devs will take their suggestions and implement them is also shaky.

I really have no faith that this is anything more than a token gesture to placate those who feel CCP has been less than partial ingame. Much fluff, no substance.

Only time will tell, I suppose.

Goozex.com Try it, you'll like it.

Don't have sigs with a cheerleaders butt swinging in it, or the prudes in the Age of Conan forum section of mmorpg.com will demand the mods have it removed.

Well, I guess the mega corps/alliances will be happy. Funny, I thought players were allowed to make their own future, not "he who's issues gets the most votes wins". Its kind of hard to not be bias to the potential to have a direct link to the ears of the EvE's God (CCP) to bring up your, excuse me, "the communities" issues.

Here's hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

strategy and strategic decisions wins my war in EVE online!

EVE & The EVE Council is going 2 change the way we look at the gaming industry!  EVE is not just a game like World of warcraft or any other game i've ever seen.

If CCP ignors the council, they a going 2 shoot them self in their foot.

You need an MBA, & a PhD in quantum physics 2 get the full play factor from this game, so the ordinary gamer will find other games than this 1 anyway.

The HC ppl's in EVE "Gleich und gleich gesellt sich gern" or in other words EVE ppl's who a alike. This game force u 2 think & use ur head! & the hc ppl's knows that!

The council is no-doubt 1 logical step further in this development.

Cool, very cool!

Although I wont agree with the MBA comment ( this game is perfectly accessible for anyone who wants to break into a new MMO mould), I do agree that this is yet another well thought out and complementary step in the development of this game ( and I am not sure the word "game" is the right for this simulation).

IMO every addition to this game since launch have been anything other than shallow and I think the fact that this game recently hired a professional economist continues to demonstrate that CCP rarely make shallow gestures.

I love 2 drive 1'st Class, even when I known that further down the road the rail's are missing!!

"this game recently hired a professional economist"

A pro. wouldnt consider this job 1 sec. without some pro. styling.

EVE has 1 totally lack of one itsi-bitsy thinngy & that's Styling - style.

EVE is just as rough as the city Reykjavik, dumped down from above into the middle of No-Man's land where we just hope 4 the best!
