Let's face it, we are all MMO players here which is why we bother to get involved in these discussions, and as MMO players we are all looking for that gaming utopia that we hope will one day come down the pipeline.

Every new game that comes out ( and I'm talking mainstream, not the million and one f2p asian offerings that crawl out of the woodwork every day ) brings something new to the table which makes MMO gaming a gradual evolution rather than an instant 'big bang'.   Here I will restrict my thoughts to the two most anticipated games due for release, AoC & Warhammer as TCoS for a long time now has lagged behind these.

FC, and more power to them for being brave and betting the house on innovation, are bringing a host of new developments to the table with AoC but is it too much too soon?  rather than a gradual advancement and improvement of the genre AoC is more an attempt at a hybrid, a kick in the pants.  An attempt to create something that is based on the ideas of the traditional MMO but removed from it enough to perhaps come under a different heading altogether.  Real-time combat, Console accesible controls and Ui, mounted combat etc. and although this will appeal to a great many people I fear that the game is destined never to be a true contender in the MMO war.   Don't get me wrong here, I do not think that AoC will fail or become just a niche game but it will never scale the dizzy subscription heights that Blizzard managed with WoW.

Warhammer on the other hand is also bringing it's fair share of new ideas but these are being implemented as ( hopefully ) improvements on the genre rather than an attempt at changing the genre altogether.  Mythic have taken what works and added another layer of polish while adding new ideas and innovations into the mix.  The gameplay will be, for the most part, unchanged from the traditional MMO and therefor be comfortable and familiar to MMO gamers.  The graphics while by no means on a par with AoC will function on lesser system specs than will Funcom's offering, a lesson that was no doubt learned from Blizzard, and there will be enough that is new to point the way towards the next evolutionary step.  With the monetary might of EA behind it and if the marketing and advertising are done correctly Warhammer could indeed become a major competitor for WoW's crown.

For the reasons stated above I go for Warhammer as the one to win this round.

"Eye for an Eye"

TCoS . Great fresh noew game ideas  , a new twist on how you build your character as well as the hotbar, which I am very excited to see working. Meaningful PVP and the game world will be unique to anything out, as well as unique characte rmodels , unique mobs ,and a unique lore set.

Think if i didn't already fall in love with the game i am currently paying, TCoS would be my second choice, with Darkfall ,in third .

Age of Immaturity , think thats enough said about that.

War  will be niche based but will fair well because of the fan base.

$$$OE$$$
"We got your game"
(and we screwed it)

AoC violence really puts me off. That and needing to upgrade my computer and installing  Vista (I know it works with XP but I'd feel I'm missing something from DX10, I know it's not much but still I'd have that feeling).

WAR looks nice but I'm afraid it wont be a world to spend your fantasy life in, for instance there won't be fishing or diving, two things I enjoy in a MMORPG (hey I'm like that!). Also, I'm afraid it will be just a "WOW BG with steroids" as someone said.

TCoS, now I will go and take a look, never did before :)

About Aion, since many people bashed it based on nothing but seeing a few screens.

Combat?

Based on combos, with reactive skills that work only when evading/blocking, when your enemy is laid on the floor, when your enemy is in the air, etc.

In air combo showoff: www.youtube.com/watch

Flying combat?

Skills that can be used only while flying, flight time limited to add a strategical point to it. Vulnerabilities added to flying so you have to think when to use it.

Early stage flying pvp, more to come on April's 8th: www.youtube.com/watch

Sieges?

Continous fortress sieges in a RvRvR fight, 7 known fortresses which will be controlled by the NPC faction at first, NPC faction that can help your race or fight against you and that will balance out the playable races if necessary by helping some more than others, thanks to their next gen AI. Siege weapons and strategical points in the battle ground that might decide the fate of the siege.

Abyss PvP with strategical spots preview (graphical engine used, though): www.youtube.com/watch

PvP?

A vertical world divided in 3 zones, 2 of them being the playable races worlds, 1 of them as the main resources spot being a ffa pvp area, The Abyss.

Portals that connect the Playable race's worlds to get some casual PvP, duels within races and arenas just for fun and practice. A point based system where you get xp from pvp, and points that you can use in order to get special equipment and certain bonuses, such as extended flight time, wings upgrade, etc.

Arena PvP: www.youtube.com/watch

Portals?

Those open randomly and for a short period of time both parts of the world, connecting places of the same level in order to engage casual pvp, or, if organized properly, havoc in the opposite race's lands. A signal in the skies will make you notice a portal has opened. A whole world of possibilities there, such as quests with pvp risk, raids that might act as NPC for the opposite faction so they need to defend it, etc.

Good example of Portals pvp: www.youtube.com/watch

Graphics?

Aion features cryengine, the one seen in games such as Farcry, but modified in order to adapt it into a MMORPG, and changed to improve animations, customization, etc. Smooth Animations mixed with an incredible texturing work. Not so heavy requirements in order to enjoy a smoother massive pvp experience.

Customization engine: www.youtube.com/watch

Emotes: www.youtube.com/watch

Grind?

Those who have played it point at Aion as a casual oriented game, with early game targets, quests divided in stages. A leveling curve slighly higher than WoW's one, and many known ways to increase your level.

Enviroment?

Small, and huge creatures all over the world and moving NPCs make the world of Aion seem full of life, things like fishes, small bugs moving around, huge flying creatures and mobs fighting each other are good example of what I'm trying to say.

Enviroment video: www.youtube.com/watch

Lore?

Interesting at least, quests with cutscenes just to help inmersion, NPCs filling you with information about why things are like that, and even why, for example, you die and resurrect right after. Decissions will take a big part on your path, though, for example, there is a quest where you have to kill some lumberjacks, but if you don't, they will help you later on.

Music?

Extracted from aionsource.com

Composer's talent finds its niche in video game scores

'It's an artificial world...there's no limit to one's expression.'

These days computer game design is now seen as a form of cyber art, and in many cases the job of composing music for the major domestic game software producers is farmed out to Hollywood composers.

In the past, NCSoft, the leading game software company in Korea, drafted Bill Brown, the composer of the score for "Any Given Sunday," to write music for its game "Lineage II," and hired the award-winning composer of the "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" soundtrack, Jeremy Soule, for "Guild Wars." Another company, Webzen, signed up Howard Shore, composer of music for "The Lord of Rings" to create a feature film-quality soundtrack for "Sun."

This time, however, NCSoft has picked Korean-Japanese "new age" musician Yang Bang Ean for its next project titled, "AION."

Mr. Yang, 45, plans to record the music for "AION" at the Abbey Road Studios in London from tomorrow with 73 musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Nick Ingman. Mr. Yang recently came to Korea before departing to London.

This is the second time that Mr. Yang has been hired to write music for a computer game ¡ª he composed music for the Chinese online game-maker NetEease ¡ª but the current project is a little different.

"NetEease asked me to compose a lot of 1-minute-long pieces in line with the game's theme," Mr. Yang said. "But NCSoft wanted me to create a single piece of music based on my feelings for the game."

Musical scores for computer games tend to be repeated throughout the game, as it is never certain how much time a player will spend on each stage. Usually, 1-minute musical scores are repeated in different scenes, and the quality of work tends to be low, he noted.

"This time, I composed 3-minute pieces that are more powerful, and placed different themes in each piece that can be modified for different situations," Mr. Yang said.
Producing music for games was different from composing music for film and animation. "I sent the music to computer graphic artists and then they modified the visuals to my music. Then I watched the updated visuals and came up with new ideas. It was fun to work on a world of fantasy together with other people," Mr. Yang said.

Mr. Yang has had experience with various types of soundtracks. He composed music for the Jackie Chan film "Thunderbolt," an MBC drama "Sangdo," a KBS documentary "Dojagi," and the Japanese animated televion shows "Emma" and "Juuni Kokki."

"I have a huge appetite for meeting people. When I come across different people and their work, I see more possibilities in myself. I develop these factors I find for my solo albums," he said.

Mr. Yang prefers to work on music for games and animated features.
"It is an artificial world, and there is no limit to one's expression. I can insert strong rock-and-roll or techno music, or mobilize an orchestra," Mr. Yang said.

No matter what kinds of methods he uses, beneath Mr. Yang's music is an Asian theme. Asia has been a growing presence in the online game industry, and even gamers in Western countries like the themes.

"Composing music for animation and games, I've become interested in visuals. So far, I produced music based on visuals, but I feel that visuals can be produced based on music as well. In the near future, I want to create a work in which both music and visual aspects are in harmony."

Mr. Yang has a house and studio in a remote forest in Japan's Nagano Prefecture, giving him the atmosphere to improve his creativity. He does everything from composing to mastering there. Mr. Yang is also studying graphics as well.

"I go all-out in something I'm interested in," he said, adding jokingly that he doesn't actually play games, because he is afraid he might not be able to quit playing.

Hope this helps you bashing the game with a bit of knowledge, or loving it entirely, up to you. And yes, I would have added it just cause of the interest this game is getting at this eager stage already.

I can not lie I know little about TCoS because the game from the videos I have seen and the amount of time spent on their forums made me believe the game was just going to be about balanced PvP. Unique character models, unique mobs, and unique lore? Could you tell me more about these?

I don't think AoC is going to be an immature game and the fact that you have gone out of your way to bash it without stating any reasons why you dislike it, says enough. Also to the user who stated mature game = mature community, that is far from the truth. While it MIGHT turn out to be mature, and there are a nice dozen or so AoC posters on these boards who continue to make the community look good by not bashing other games, posting news here, and being friendly all around, there is also a nice group of people from the same crowd who continue to bash and bash every game that pops its head up around here.

I am also confused as to how you can call WAR a niche game despite its mass appeal as evidence by having the most amount of beta application for a western based mmo ever along with the fact that even people who hate Warhammer are willing to admit that based on how it looks alone and how it is supposed to be an RvR game is going to get it subscription numbers in mass. Please feel free to explain your opinions so the rest of us can understand where you are coming from.

why do humans build, because it isn''t there

TCoS will have the least subs.  However it will have the fewest complaints(by player base percent) when compared to the other two.

and the least all MMO suxors people coming from it.
