it seems like they are always shields & swords, bow & arrow, 'magic' , knights on horses and 'ye ol' time' dialog.

i'd really like to play a game like everquest2 that had motorcycles instead of horses, guns & ammo instead of swords and bows,  gangs instead of guilds, dollars and cents instead of platinum and gold...

does anything like that exist? or are there any in development?

Behold! Rash of the Itch King comes in November! Quake in fear!

Yeah...there's plenty of Sci-fi MMOs...Tabula Rasa, Eve (complicated so if you like easymode not Eve), uhh...Anarchy Online...not SWG...can't remember em all right now but they're out there.

Edit: Sorry, only read the first sentence! XD

There's no MMOs set in present day really, nothing like GTA.

Part of what draws people to MMOs is the escape-from-reality factor. Having an MMO set with present-day material would definitely be a niche game, and you probably wouldn't find a huge number of people playing it.

Also, if it in any way included "gangs" as a reference to something like a guild, you can almost bet that the idiotic US politicians are going to have a field day with the game, and try to ban it from the face of the Earth (or at least the country).

OP, the answer is simple, all the other developing houses want WoW money.

Only LOTRO has figured out the key to WoW's success and are trying hard to capitalize on it.

There are gang based moden day MMOs, at least one I know of in Asia.  Fact is, some gov'ts do not like the idea of gangster glorifying game being played among youngsters.  Imagine the scenarios: PK zergs between police and gangs online, imagine the gangs winning.

As for modern day MMOs there are lots, from WW2online to Planetside, from Tabula Rasa to EVE.  There are such games.  Too bad they tend to be smaller in subscription base than the Elf-Orc variants in general.

Still if you want to be different, try out the games I list or shop around for other variants.  You might find the game you love, who knows?

MMORPG Character Monuments

...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest...

Last I looked at MMORPGChart, it was like 80% fantasy genre, 18% Sci-Fi, and a the rest <Other>

As I was doing research for the MMORPG Finder code, the main MMORPG genre I found included
Fantasy
SCI-FI
Social
Martial Arts
Combat
SuperHero
Pirate

How so?  WoW has over 10 million CURRENT paying subscribers.  No other game comes close.  LOTRO and EQ2 are tied for second with around 400,000 current paying subscribers.

Both of them suck so doesn't matter and EQ2 was DEAD when I played and it's a joke of a game so tbh 400k is pushing it.... maybe 100-200k.
