Kinda interesting and he put the finger in the eye on some of the MMORPG:s arround. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=l8zhKQSUCRw -battling in MMORPG:s of today http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uaynt7tAy7E - Darkfall So much truth in what he says. Today MMORPG:s isnt skill-based, theyre turn-based. And Darkfall will be the next generation of MMORPGS:s. =) |

Yay! Quote! |
I liked this part -
lol Looking at his videos I'd say that he is correct 99% of the time in regards to what fans want out of mmorpgs, and the sorry excuses for mmorpg's we end up with. |

Do not fear death, Death will come a knocking anytime it wants. |
Cant Argue with him on his points. Its is very true. Even my favorite MMO to date Everquest 1 did it. I dont know if you can call it turn based combat but its not real time for sure.

Aye. And sadest part is that the ones cheering the loudest for AoC dont know what theyre talking about. They probably never tried out a good skillbased MMORPG like for example Ultima Online where skills matters.=) And isnt it kinda fun that the loud mouthed AoC followers that been on the Darkfall board 24/7 last weeks have nothing to say in the matter.=) |

When I think of skill based, I think of fps' and their 'twitch" gameplay. |

Skill based games allow players with better skill to raise to the top were as games that allow you to button mash and have auto attack allow for people with more time to raise to the top. That is what I am thinking he/she means but I could be wrong. |

Originally posted by TdogSkalI'm just trying to understand the mindset so I hope you don't mind I use your post as reference. Lets use your skill based vs Class based first. Skill based= Ultima Online vs Class based= Everquest I never played Utlima Online so please forgive me if I get something wrong while I'm trying to understand this. As far as I know, Ultima Online is always classified as a skill based game, but in what sense? It's not a twitch based game like an FPS right? So skill based in Ultima Online is referring to skills as skill values in certain abilities right? For example sword use, running, those types of things? Everquest is class based, meaning class/level grind if I'm understanding things correctly. Now here's where I get lost in the whole concept. In Ultima, you have to skill up your skills to be more effective correct? Where as in Everquest you level up your character/class and your attributes go up a set amount as you level. Am I wrong to assume, someone that skilled up say their sword use in Ultima would have an advantage over someone that has no sword use skill at all trying to fight them with a sword? Isn't that basically the same as fighting someone in a class based game that's higher level than you are?
Skill based vs Auto attack combat Now this reminds me more of FPS vs turn based, please let me know if I'm wrong on this example. Using the same games in my previous example cept.....I can't really Ultima Online wasn't necessarily twitch combat right? I'm probably going to miss something like I said because I never played Ultima Online. Skill based games allow players with better skill to raise to the top were as games that allow you to button mash and have auto attack allow for people with more time to raise to the top. This example is very tough for me to decipher. You see, even in say a skill based game such as Ultima Online, it takes time to skill up your attributes just the same as it takes to level up a character in a class/level based game. The only skill based games I can see fitting in this example would be FPS' where you can just jump in a game and basically be equal to everyone else playing. Also, in Ultima Online would you say it takes some time to get some gear to be any decent with also? Not to mention you're limited by the combat roll that uses the values of your skill? Based on this, imo Ultima Online is only skill based on the fact that instead of levels you raise, you have skill values you have to raise which effect your damage output along with the type of weapon you're using and still involves a bit of button mashing. Which in my eyes isn't much different from class/level based games, just the wording is different.
