Well, it's really difficult to qualify something as "next-gen", as everyone has their different definitions of it... the game will be good, but nowhere near next-gen, at least according to my definition. When I think of next-gen I think of something so groundbreaking it literally skips a revolution, thus matching well with its name. In fact, AoC is doing very little that hasn't been done, just improved and/or first introduced to MMORPGs (not the gaming genre in general, though). But the improvements are vast, which makes it pretty darn good. But in my definition of next-gen, it has to be a completely different game from every other that just blows people away. AoC is good, nowhere near that good though, sadly. One example I can use is a PC game coming out later this year... Spore. A lot of people are calling this game revolutionary and next-gen simply because of how ridiculously intricate it is / is going to be. I would think differently though, and thus adding to my point that a lot of people have different ideas of what is next-gen and what is not. The way most things work is that everything just slowly improves over time to a point where we wouldn't notice "next-gen"... look at the GTA series. Vastly improved from the first game to now, but it didn't happen overnight. Happened slowly and almost seamlessly. Being off topic, I'm surprisingly finding a lot of people consider WoW and EQ2 as next-gen... in my opinion I don't see much from either that was really so great that they could be considered next-gen, just the most popular of their times. Not that I dislike either, I actually really loved EQ while it lasted, and WoW was not too horrible, but in fact I can say AoC is doing more than either of these two... still not next-gen though lol... I have too high expectations I guess |

Aye, from what I can tell based on generations, EQ2 and WoW were the Second generation, but I don't believe AoC can be considered Next Gen. I'd refer to AoC and WAR as (possibly) the height of this generation. Still have to see if they live up to it. Blizzard is working on their Next Gen MMO, and depending on what happens with Darkfall and the Warhammer 40K MMO, those will possibly fall into those categories. Nothing out there is third generation yet. But thank you for heralding the ending of an age. I do believe AoC and WAR can be the final dominators at the end of this age of MMO's. If these two succeed like everyone hopes, the players will look for the next age to usher in something new and amazing. |
