First off, I want to make it clear that this is not a bash post.

I'm not looking to bash anything, I have just recently come to the realization of what it is about EVE that keeps me away.

I started EVE in late beta, from the start it has captured my eye as the only good MMO left on the market. It has everything I could ever want in a game. It's a total sandbox, with a very rich background to support everything.

I have been:
Imperial Enforcer
Miner
Trader
Pirate
Scammer (OOO BOO ME! Screw you. It's legal in EVE. It's hard and it's very fun if you're good at Social Engineering)
Ganker
Mission Runner
Transporter
Merc

I have pretty much done every major profession in the entire game and loved every single one of them. Something, that I might add, is very uncommon for me in MMOs. I love this game. It's perfection. But, there has always been a problem and I never knew what. The thing is, I've never actually played the game for more than 3 consecutive months total. I always end up quiting.... losing interest really. Every time I come back I can't understand why.

That is, until this time. I have been debating with myself on whether or not I should go back to EVE. But alas, I don't think I will this time. Because I finally, after all these years, realized what it is about EVE that I can't stand, what drives me up the wall.

It's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FREAKING SLOW! Everything takes so much time. Not the skill training, that never bothered me, in fact I like the way skills train. It's everything else. Spending hours camping systems, or baiting ppl (on the good and bad sides), hell even moving was a pain in the ass.

What made me realize this was a time back when I had my fling with the bad crowd, not the ganker or the pirate crowd, you know the one. The one everyone here is probably looking down on me for. That's right.... scammer. Well, here's the story. I had a fat whale who was more than willing to drop me a very nice donation of 800mil and I was ecstatic to take his generous donation to my worthy cause. But the thing was that he was 15 jumps away to a place where I had no BMs and it was late when my first class in the morning started at 8. Regrettably, I turned down his donation and went to bed... without much sleep I might add.

It really urkes me that this is why I can't keep playing the only game out that has come this close to perfection (imo).

I will definitely try the game once again, when and if they ever put the Avatars in. But until then, I just can't bring myself to do it for the ump-teenth time.

Does anyone else feel this way about this game or have any similar situations with other games? It's kind of depressing to tell you the truth.

Yes.

I'm a little surprised it took you this long to figure it out.  I used to fly a hauler in and out of 0.0, used to take me 90 minutes to do two runs.

Agreed, i totally love the game but if i had a busy or long day at work and wanted to just log on for a half hour or something, i wouldnt be able to accomplish anything at all in that time, it takes forever to travel, move stuff, equip a new ship, fight a good fight, do a simple mission, etc...

so yes i agree is it depressing, i would log on for a half hour and end up flying around a little then logging off havnt done nothing really but changed skills to train or something

Boredom is in the temperament of the beholder.

I like how long things like travel take in EVE. It allows me to multitask - read a book, houseclean, alt-tab and webbrowse, etc.

Some games, like Wurm Online, occupy a middleground of pace: The time consumption is tuned to just the right amount to make you feel like you're wasting long moments of your life, but prevent you from taking advantage of the downtime by multitasking because you have to start the next action before you can make any progress on anything outside of the game.

And on the opposite end from EVE are the fast-paced games where you can never quite get a break short of logging out.

MMORPG Character Monuments

...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest...

in my experience, as I play MMOs over this last decade, travel has evolved to pretty much convenience. It my view, they 'on demand, near instant traveling' cheapens the gameplay and immersion into the world. Its gotten to the point its like hailing a taxi.

Yup, I love calling me a taxi.  I don't want to end up multitasking when I play a game.  I'm a focus player.  I'm the kind of person who will take a 5 minute flight in WoW and actually sit there looking at the screen waiting for the flight.

If I get up and start doing other things I lose focus on my task ingame.  I progress slower ingame and out of it doing two things at once.  Lastly I don't find myself enjoying the game as much when I have to get up to do other things waiting around.  That is why I said goodbye to Sword of the New World.

Things should take time in these games, especially if PvP is involved, but I should not have to sit and wait more than 2 minutes for any non-interactive traveling.  I shouldn't wait more than 15 seconds to craft, mine, or cast a damn spell either.

Yeah, I have to agree.  That was one of the things I hated about EVE, if you're going any appreciable distance, it takes FOREVER!  Warp to the gate, jump, rinse, lather and repeat.  Boring.

If I'm going to play the game, I want to actually do something.  If I've got enough time to go do something else, why bother playing the game at all?

Failure to communicate.

The only reason I never got into EVE was because of the time it took. I could get past the absolutely unreal confusion that it brought with it, but when it takes 45 minutes to go from point A to point B, well I just can't deal with that.

I order my groceries online.

Well, when I played the game I traded a bit and I spent the time figuring out the next good, safest route as well as my profit margins. I can understand mission running and the like being slow, but for some occupations it fits. I disagree the multi-tasking, since when was getting out of your chair to go wash the dishes or do chores while playing a game a good thing? All it shows is a slow pace. But I suppose a MWD can slightly fix that and having a large capacitor?
