Never Commit to One Style.... To Keep An Open Mind

Following on from my recent post (http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/175753)

I am still trailing and doing the legacy quests.  Currently level 16.  I found no real competition on missions until level 15 when I had to take out level 18 tuskens.

The more I play this game, I feel that with a lick of paint (graphics overhaul) and a better UI (User Interface), this game would be okay to play.  Its not bad, its fantastic either.  I found that entering major cities caused some lag and the object would "jump" into the screen no matter what I set my graphics setting to.

I think the object jumping maybe something to do with how the databases are written and how the data is transmitted between SOE Servers and my PC.  To be honest, not my field of expertise but a guess.

2 more nights to go on the free trial and I mite stay on.  On a review basis I would give this game the following against other MMOs I have played.

Graphics   2/5   - Now looking outdated and collision detection is clumsy.  Animations need more work to make look more solid and fluid.  I would give a 3 if the buildings in places like Tatooine and Naboo looked more detailed and not so plain all the time.

Sound  3/5  Its Star Wars!!  I would give it 3.5 if the sounds where better written into the environment.  A better atmospheric feel to it.

Gameplay  3.5/5  Simple and easy to use.  UI does need a neat Star Warsy looking overhaul to bring it up to date.

An honest review of the CURRENT game?  Please post your opinions.

My review using the Vet Trials for the last few weeks.

Sound 4/5 - I have always like the sounds and music of this game.

Graphics 3/5 - Not as bad to me as they are to you, certainly on pace with MMO's that are several years old.

Gameplay 1.5/5 - This is where the game becomes dreadful.  The combat is horrible, RPG combat with the speed turned up.  The economy is pointless with uber loot coming from missions.  Classes and quests are some of the worst I have ever seen.

Here is the problem.  If I or anyone else wanted to play WoW, we would, and most do.  Star Wars Galaxies tries its best to Be WoW but it fails miserably short of achieving the goal.  The UI is aweful, the gameplay mechanics are aweful, and the game has no heart, no soul, no depth.

Like I said, WoW is a BETTER version of this game.  If this wasn't Star Wars, NOBODY would play it.  Even being Star Wars, few play it.

Tecmo Bowl.

Well, I cannot honestly recommend anyone to pay for the game who has never played it.

Although the game has improved since the NGE (by bringing back some of the pre-cu aspects), it still seems to lack some of the things that it needs to appeal to the only person who would seem interested in playing it . . . Star Wars Junkies . .  .

For this game to have any chance, they would really need to make better use of the great music provided in star wars lore at the appropriate moments... Also, combat needs to be slowed down. The graphics are showing some of thier age, and the only real way to compensate for this would be to streamline the combat animations to make them look more relevant and graceful.

I think the appearance tab would be a good idea. Since the pre-cu I have always felt that armor has been one of the uglier aspects of the game. Do not get me wrong, some of it looks cool, but I always wanted to see more storm trooper armor less composite armor in the game.

The game has great poi's that are wonderful tips of the hat to Star Wars Lore, however, little is done to utilize these places.

I do think that space and ground game is a good point in SWG. I know some people who only really play because they like the space aspect.

Overall, I think people should try the free trials, some people might really enjoy it, quite a few will not.

I  do not play many mmo's so I would rate the game a 2 out of 5. If it was not star wars, it would never have survived this long. I would have ranked it higher but the problem with this game is any good aspects might be subject to sudden change. This poor communication with the customer base alone is a reason to be wary.

so what $OE needs to do is roll the game backt o the pre-cu system and give us vets free time for robbing us in the first place.

I am going to be brutally honest and say "shut up about pre-cu" its not the game now and wont be in the future.  Enough said.......

And next time you read a post, read the whole post, (including the bit at the bottom).

I agree, I wish people would please just knock it off with the "pre-cu" stuff -- and this coming from someone who loved it back in the day.  Just wasting space repeatedly calling for something that can't happen.  Move on, for petes sake.

Hello iank240, welcome to SWG forums: Where every time somebody tries to give the game a chance, Jesus butt-rapes a baby Harp seal!

But seriously, being a pre-CU/NGE Vet I have come back a few times now and have found game to be getting better. The honest truth is that SOE/LA DID screw ALOT of the original playerbase and will never recover them. The best they can do is try to make game better for those that stayed. The fact that their is no avertising for game anywhere and very few Boxes to be found in any Retail chains proves that they are not trying to bring in new players. Maybe deep down they know they made a mistake and are trying to rectify it as best that they can.

I am having a blast with my Trial so far, I might actually start subscribing again after 3 years.

BAD JESUS! Put that Seal down! I said maybe!

That's funny because I feel exactly the same way about the NGE.  ; )

Spelling and grammar do matter.

I find your lack of real-life skills disturbing.

I'm currently alternating between my vet trial and the Core3 "bird" server; the graphical difference is striking. I'm not referring to the classic animations (superb), but just the general look of everything. The current game has such a "patchiness" to the color and contrast of the rendering that I am seriously wondering whether they have gone to 8-bit color (and low polygon counts?) to try to reduce the incessant lag.
