Discussion of the beta announcement and release:
I'm a programmer. I do business/accounting stuff - nothing too hard. I'm also a supervisor, and I see newbie programmers make the same mistake over and over again (until they learn better). The mistake is: they think they can design something, test it for a little bit, and throw it out to production. Inevitably, the program will blow up due to something the programmer didn't foresee. Programs must be extensively tested under varied conditions before the programmer can feel confident.
I couldn't help but think of this when I saw Darkfall would be in beta for just "a few weeks" before release....

DArkfall is not like your average game; World of Warcraft, Warhammer or Age of Conan. They are actually using pro testers to beta test the game, and Tasos is a pro devs, his team are the best of the world, game is so good they dont need our opinion.

IF what they say is true and they have been using AI bots and paid beta testers for an extensive period of time, then I don't see too much of an issue. There are more and more people claiming to have seen this beta with rumors of guilds having some people in DFO beta. As long as all of these rumors are true, they will have to just adapt and over come quickly when the game goes live. They say they update the build sometimes several times a day right now. As long as they can do that and patch clients just as quickly, they might be able to pull it off. Would I like to see the beta with massive amounts of people for 6-12 months? Sure. But let's face it, DFO will be a very niche game. Even very crappy games can get 50k people paying them $15 a month for ever to play the game. Not saying the game is crappy, but they are very set in their ways of just one ruleset and that is full loot pvp only. I can't wait to play and wish them the best of luck. I'll sit here on the sidelines watching to see if it really launches.

Keep in mind AoC have those so called pro testers aka QA team and close beta is running since April 2007, compared to dark fall they have maybe 20% of features and I dont see that beta running "almost perfect" Just on the side note: Funcom 300 employees, DF = 4 guys moved from Norway to Greece.
p.s. Dont get me wrong Iam DF fan and I really wish the game is released but man posting such nonsense is not good for anyone ( except trolls |

Don''t mistake silence for stupidity.... |
That announcement about release and beta are the same ones they have spewed out over the years. No concrete dates, just a general timeline sometime this year. Also, saying they are using only professional testers is a joke, and means their game would not play on half the systems out. The reason you have games with public betas is so that they can get the games to work consistently with multitudes of configurations. Saying a company is just using professional testers is an insult too people who have actually worked many hours over the years really testing games. People are chosen for testing because of computer configurations, simple as that.
This thread like the other new Darkfall thread makes me laugh. |

While we speak this game can already be in beta and has for some time. Who can tell this is not for lets say 2 years already in closed beta and tested day in.... day out to the bone. Open beta is not a must for a software release circle. Yes while we see them often used in open source the use of open betas in commercial releases varies in timing and length. In open sources releases software remains sometimes for years in open beta just for the developers NOT to have to offer full support or guaranty the fix of remaining issues. However, what means open beta for 80% of people ? It means to make the decision "yes cool game i will play it" or "no keep this away from me". For that purpose an extended free playtime just before release is good enough. AoC started open beta about 1 month before release too why no one questions their open beta strategy?

Closed Beta in the case of Darkfall means, a team of "Pro" Testers and, according to Dev-Journal's the stunning AI of the game, which, apparently, helps to find bugs as well.
There will be no beta like there is in conventional games so far. No large-scale closed Beta-Test where players are invited. Aventurine have said more than once that they want to present a feature-complete, bug-free game to the public for "Playtesting", which is what the Open beta period basically is for them. |
