Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his brother.

Including an engineering sample of ATI 4870X2 - soon to be released:

Age of Conan Performance

Age of Conan is a nice looking MMO that will soon have a DX10 path. For now, we tested everything on the highest settings except AA (set to 4x), and we enabled the advanced transparency option (which we assume is an in-game option for transparency AA, though we could be wrong).

Clearly, AMD is king in Age of Conan, with the single card performing well and terrific CrossFire scaling as well. The 4870 X2 will be quite fast here, at least in the DX9 path.

The R700 did perform a bit better here and there than multi-card Crossfire, but nothing to write home about. In general, performance between the two is very similar. And of course, if this performance holds until launch, AMD's R700 will be worth a nice premium over a single GTX 280.

Remember the first graph is your typical 30" monitor res.

These are with everything turned on full.

"advanced transparency option (which we assume is an in-game option for transparency AA, though we could be wrong)."  - this is true and turned off there would be a good extra performance.

looks like crossfire scales well and ATI is top for Age of Conan!

Off topic, the new 48xx series is just incredible in terms of money value / perfomance.

I don't want to turn this into a Nvidia VS Ati, thread, but as an ATI owner myself (currently owning 3870x2, thinking of jumping to 4870x2 when it comes out), the only thing that really drives me nuts is the fact that the new series seems to be plagued by the poor speed fan response the 38xx series has, which forces you to manually set your fan speed most of the time to avoid high temps. Let's hope for a fix sometime this year

Edit - Spelling.

Does anyone else find those numbers depressing? I mean, to play this game at max quality, at an acceptable framerate (60+ fps), means playing at 1680 resolution or lower or buying triple/quad graphics card setups. That is so over the top for an MMO. I guess there is a sort of future proofing to it, if the game has a future.

And what happens when they release the DX10 client? Will they release the DX10 client?

Don't confuse bad performance with good graphics. There are simply bad developers out there who throw away resources like trash. A good developer can develop the same graphical capability with 5 times the performance of a bad developer without breaking a sweat. Good example, doom3. That easily still matches some games coming out today in graphics still, and it was running on computers that couldn't even handle half-life 2. Age of Conan is a very demanding game

Anyway the problems so far is the 8800 drivers render slower and have 15 fps lower than XP. The 8800 SLI machine makes the game look wonderful full tilt , expect for shadows and some reflections which drops the performance down to 11 fps in some areas. Dunno with the VRAM memory leak issue, still working on it.

You do know that most games lose between 10-50% FPS when DX10 is enabled. Do you realize what kind of machine you would need to run it in DX10 mode?

If I was Funcom I would postpone the release of the DX10 client till next year, pushing it down the priority ladder.

Are those results in full screen or windowed mode... I read on ExtremeTech that MMOs didn't take full advantage of SLI/Crossfire when in windowed mode (which I normally play) and just wanted to confirm.

Current: WAR
Played: EVE, Lineage II, SWG (Pre CU), CoH, EQ2, WoW.
Waiting for: Stargate Worlds

I don`t no? how many people really care about funcom crap game? AOC is a lame horse and within the next 12 weeks it will be just another mmorpg that did`nt live up to the hype. People are not interested in weather it will be DX10 or upgrading they`re pc to play a lifeless game.

AOC had its chance and blew it but only the die hard fanboys don`t see it, many have moved on or are moving on in the next 12 weeks.

Waste of money. There is still no PC game that needs that much GPU power, AoC only benefits from it because it is poorly coded.
