In a few months, then there will be like 1000-3000 paying players left.
Can they survive with so few players? 3000x15$ = 45,000$ a month. Is that enough to pay their bills and serverload? Hmm. I don't think so. 10+ Developers at Farlan wanting atleast 5000 $ each,Alchemic dream has to get paid,The game have to pay for traffic and their 80 PC serverpark has to be paid if they didn't pay it in cash. Electric and housingbills added to that. They need 10,000 players or so to keep their head above water. Seems to me they are hoping for the chinese version to save them, because i can't see how they will get 10,000 people to play this version. Thoughts? |

I think all but the chinese version has GOT to be the beta test while they collect money at the same time. Its the ONLY logical explanation.

1000 to 3000 left? that would be like a good sized DAoc server. Do you really see that many people, even considering the size of the world. On a side not Horizons is still functioning with less than 20K, but they had to do a bankruptcy to clear some debt so who knows.

The real question is not : will they reach 10.000 subscriptors? The real question is : how much of the current player base will opt for a Freedom pass and dont pay any monthly fee?(and dont buy credits since is real hard to level and anyway you can buy new zones because everything is closed): Most will go this way: freedom pass,I dont pay Im not loosing money anyway,I wait till this is playable. So I dont really know hom many subscriptors but....monthly fee? A real optimistic number is 1000. And a mmorpg need 20.000+ monthly fees to make profits.(but we all know NP3 is not making this for profit). The will stay live as long as is needed to not being sued by customers(6 months from release). |

I doubt that... 100-300 probably more realistic. |

This game will idle at about 500 - 600 players come August. After that it will drop by 30% over the following months. That said, Farlan/NP3 havn't even recouped their development cost. I'm sure their investors know how badly this game is doing and will soon pull the plug. Best case scenario is 1,000 to 1,200 subscriptions a month (max) giving Farlan approxatly $ 18,000/month. That won't pay 3 people saleries...! Thus, as i have said since ealier this year (Feb-March) Dark & Light will flop horribly because it offers nothing experienced MMORPG's haven't seen before. The fact that it's unplayable doesn't matter, the game itself or it's premis is horribly flawed/dumb..! Come August when the 2 month subs are gone we'll see the actual state of the game. At this rate (with the extreme ineptitude by Vuur and his DEV team) the game will probably fold before October. Then we can laugh loudly in the face of that smug Vuur for not listening to his fans... people that followed him for 4 - 5 years. Thnx for all the excitment over those years... but you fooled us into believing you were a gamer and someone who knew or had a vision... yet you were all about the $$. You get none.... MMORPG's are exactly like Fantasy books, write a good book it will sell, wite a bad one and the first people who buy it tell others about it at the water cooler, gym, golf coarse and on forums. -Zvorak |

Do they currently have 500 players? I wonder what they are at. Either way, they will need a lot more than that to keep in the black (if they still are). By August they'll have to come up with another way to generate income: You'll have the Uber Pioneer Ultra Dragon Castle Super Pack released. "For only $15,000 a month, you can own and operate a flag pole and some quest-less NPCs all on your private 1K square kilometer plot. You can discover the joys of crafting (which will be implemented in a future patch/roll back) while Shield-boarding and taming one of the dozens of bugged mobs." And the ever popular - "Trade your Money for Goths!" Campaign For every $500 you donate to Farlan's Legal Defense Team, you will receive 100 Goth in return! Want to buy that Leather Vest you've always wanted but didn't have the Goth to afford? Wish you have some extra Goth for one of the many weapons that are yet to exist in game? No problem! Call Today! Or the Plush Figurine Line: Farlan Plush Pile of Poop - $1,000 AD Broken Quest Plush Bug - $250 _Pix_ Troll Voodoo Doll (A Farlan Dev Favorite!) - $500 And finally, the "Throw a Pie/Pastery in the Face of a Moderator!" Want to hit Vuuar with a Banana Creme Pie? Did Serpico lock your thread? Want him to taste hot Apple Streusel? Pies $125 Hot Streusel $75 |

I know the developers of shadowbane in a irc talk which had a ex dev from EQ1 both agreed that 30-50k regulars is the number needed to be considered profitable depending on time/money the game took to develop. Now some games like horizons and neocron certainly have below this numbers are are still alive with no big name to back them up like say SoE is keeping MxO alive. |

you don't want to just stay afloat you want to make a decent profit not just to make a profit but to pay off the early development costs. DnL was in development since maybe 2002? 4 years of salaries, taxes, AD, infrastructure, marketing (there was some before now not so much). There's probably more... Anyways this brings up another question. Will DnL ever bring out a profit? I would answer with a pretty confident "No" |
