Mortal Online

My first thought was, WOW. After checking it out I feel there is something fishy, darkfall-like about it. I am not convinced this is a real mmo under development. Just my opinion though. I am still following it for a little bit.

http://www.mortalonline.com/

what is fishy about mortal? people seem to thinks it's vaporware just because it has similar features to darkfall. reposting this here to "convince" you that it is a real mmo that is in development.

1) they are using unreal engine 3. epic games doesn't license their products to companies that are not well funded as it would look bad on their engine if they didn't make a quality game.

here's a quote from mark rein, vice president of epic games.

“We're excited that new developers like Star Vault, who have such great potential, are recognizing the value of licensing Unreal Engine 3. We know this is the way they can realize their creative ambitions quickly and deliver great games to market. Some of the most significant companies in the game business have licensed Unreal Engine 3 to build their MMO games and Star Vault has now joined an illustrious group. We'll be watching their progress with great interest."

2) starvault is listed on the swedish stock exchange.

3) they will be at the leipzig games convention in august showing mortal online.

i just looked at their website, the game looks MOST impressive. i was seriously hooked just by that opening movie.

lol, i cant believe you are letting your girlfriend choose your hobbies, or what you can and cant do in life. *hears a whip in the background* if my wife ever made me stop doing something i love to do (eg, play games) then she would no longer be my wife, end of story.

There is no wayyyyyy!!! Funcom requires 500k monthly subscribers just to break even, it's complete fabrication.

No MMO company in their right mind would project 500k monthly subscribers as an achiveable target and if they NEED 500k just to break even they wouldn't even launch the game.

Sorry I hate AoC as much as the next man, but that article is just rubbish and written by a total moron and WoW fanbois.

completely agree, i know it has its problems...but, this article is a bunch of made up bullshit. he made up the statistics, and percentages completely. so bogus.

um he means "both" by it has a single player campaign...and you can play multiplayer campaigns...online. also, people can create their own maps to play online.

Oh by the way Jayheld90, this is the General Discussion Forum, this discussion is pretty general!

I like your Soup Nazi sig, but the one above is very annoying!

why is it important how many beers people drink? does it have any relevance to anything? oh..well. i drink maybe a few shots of jaeger and red bull mixed, two or three times a MONTH. if you drink every night, you have a problem there...

oh yeah, the launch was smooth as hell. the server i was on never crashed once. the client on the other hand...crashes every 30min-2hr. countless bugs, really there is so many i couldnt count them all... missing graphics on armor...missing/messed up terrain graphics, missing/bugged weapon graphics, bugged quests EVERYWHERE, there was no bank, mail, or market system in (not to mention the biggest one, there is no pvp system in yet. you know...the one they promised us.). i could go on and on. yes, they are fixing the stuff, slowly, but most of that stuff shouldnt have happened in a launch.

When has a franchise MMO ever been listed with a series number?

WoW was not Warcraft 4 - Ultima Online was not Ultima IX.

Here are your links:

http://www.lucasartsbioware.com/

http://www.bioware.com/games/

Note where it says games in development near the bottom of the page.  The MMORPG is a seperate game in development from the LA game.  I suspect the LA game is KOTOR3.

They have been working on this MMORPG since Dec 2005 - are you suggesting that Bioware went ahead and started working on a starwars MMORPG for almost 2 years without making a deal with LA first?

As for your first point, ever heard of Final Fantasy XI?

As for your last point, it is within the realm of possibility that LA and Bioware could have made an unpublicized deal back in 2005.

There are several reasons why I'm 90% convinced that Bioware is developing a SW MMO:

1)  Bioware had at one time stated that they would not work with an IP again.  When they announced that they were working on a new (secret) MMO, they went back on that.

2)  Point #1 makes it far more likely that not that the MMO is based on an existing IP.

3)  They have hired a lot of former SWG devs onto their MMO staff.

4)  The simple fact that their MMO is such a big secret.  Seriously, what motive would they have to keep it such a top secret if it was ANYTHING other than Star Wars?  I mean really think about that.  Other MMOs try very hard to get publicity, they don't hide from it.  With SWG active and going, there is motive.

5)  The fact that an SWG 2 or new SW mmo has not been announced.  If the secret Bioware MMO was not Star Wars, it would seem to me that SWG 2 or a new SW MMO should have been announced to be in development.  SWG is quite long in the tooth now as MMOs go.

Admittedly, none of these facts are a smoking gun, but when you put them all together it becomes pretty powerful I think.

if it is in truth a staw wars (kotor) mmo, if they can make it ability based, and the crafting really similar to how swg first was...i would be a happy camper. (updated graphics and all)

Was the account that this character is on under a subscription cycle during this time? My question was what happens to your characters after your subscription ends and you do not renew.

i have played, off and on since 2005, my account was never deleted. i am pretty sure they dont ever delete them, that is just there to save thier ass if they had a sudden ugre to delete some old accounts.

This is from the official forums, a letter from the game director:

Fellow Hyborians!

As you may have noticed we have had frequent patches the last two weeks. We hope this will soon start to quiet down, but as long as there are major issues – and there have been – we will dedicate the Conan team to fixing them and giving you these fixes as soon as possible! We have a plan on how to move this game forward because as you know, what you have today is but the platform – the dawn of this world. I hope you enjoy the game as is, but I can ensure you, this is but the beginning!

Our focus from now on can be summarized by these points:

  1. We will add content, specifically in mid-late thirties and mid-late fifties and make the leveling speed smoother in those areas, reducing the need to grind.
  2. We will have an overhaul of the PvP system – adding consequence and a host of small things.
  3. We are fixing bugs you reported through all channels we can get information from.
  4. We will add a new large outdoor region in the 55-60 range this summer!
  5. This is only a small taster! More information about the exciting summer and fall Roadmap will come the end of the next week!
  6. We are staffing up Customer Service, Quality Assurance and Community departments!

1. Filling “thin areas” in our content

We have seen that there are certain level ranges of these Hyborian Adventures that do not have the amount of quality we wish them to have. Most specifically these are the end of the Thirties and the end of the Fifties level ranges. We are addressing this in several ways.

  • Several mid-late thirties dungeons are getting a complete overhaul (Black Castle, Pyramid of the Ancients and Treasury of the Ancients)
  • Several quests are being made fuller and more entertaining. If people wish to revisit these quests, we will add a system to let them try them out again.
  • We are adding first a batch of quests in Eiglophian Mountains (lvls 55+)
  • We are also adding in a bunch of quests that didn’t quite make it for launch in the 30+ areas.
  • Around 60 quests through the game have been flagged as “Lore Quests”. They will now be patched out with full Voice-Over. (Roughly 1 quest per level after level 20)…

2. Overhauling the PvP System

People like our open PvP system. There are many plans on how to give this open free PvP even more meaning and Purpose. In the meantime we will be doing some smaller tweaks, and we plan to get these out sometimes in June. I will not go into 100% detail here, but that will come next week! What I can promise is:

  • An update on how sneaking and perception works in PvP (nothing major, but an adjustment).
  • A change in the amount of information you get when you hover over an other player.
  • An added system of consequence to “ganking”. (Killing much-much lower level players).
  • A system of adding consequence to losing a PvP match, and winning a PvP match + turning on PvP Leveling.
  • A change in how Crowd Control (Root, Knockback etc) works in PvP.
  • PvP gear.

3. New Massive Region

We will unveil this location later, but it will feature a host of quests, new monsters and places of dreams or horror. It will be styled towards the players in the late 50s and bridge the experience on the way to Atzels Approach. We have plans for releasing several of the areas that didn’t quite make it for the release.

4. Fixing bugs and increasing Customer Service

Funcom has always prided ourselves with having great customer satisfaction. The success so far for this title has left us with the need to increase the size of CS. This will go in parallel with the constant fixing of bugs and other issues that lead people to petition. Included in this is even better testing of the game by increasing the size of Quality Assurance and informing you better about changes by staffing up the Community Department. I know a blurb like this will haunt me always, but I will still venture one: We aren’t satisfied until all our customers are! You know we had a very, very difficult launch of Anarchy-Online! That was a very painful process for all of us working on it – 4 years. You might not understand how driven we are to make sure you enjoy this game, and all the support around it!

The future is very bright for Hyboria. There will be many bright mornings following this, the very first. Together we shall surge ahead and build the world even bigger, better and more detailed!

Please feel free to visit the official discussion thread here.

Yours truly,

Gaute Godager
Game Director
Age of Conan, Funcom

...

So, what will you guys have to complain about now?

what i have to complain about is...

1. it should have all been in there before the game launched.

2. they ARE NOT going to have all this stuff done by the end of the month. where does it even say that. (oh yeah, it doesnt)

3. refer to number one.

Dex, Str, Wisdom stats on gear have no effect.  I mean come on?  You release a game where the gear stats do NOTHING?  How exactly do you "miss" something like this during 5 years of development?

Here's another good one, you post something for sale at the trader, and cancel it when it does not sell, then find you can't sell it to the vendor.  It no longer shows up in the list of items you can sell.    You just have to delete them to get rid of them.

Oh, and a number of items like rings for example, when placed for sale on the trader do not actually show up for sale.

How exactly do you "miss" stuff like this?   The answer is you don't.

The game is simply not finished and Funcom expects us to pay them for the next year while they finish the game?

yeah, i thought the game was cool at first. unfortunately, i have already canceled my account. if they were making an effort to fix these things, it would be a different story, but most of it has been broken since day one.

For instance, in Tarantia - there's a dog chasing a cat, little children running around, etc.  Various little things such as that.

In Conall's Valley - you can see crows flying overhead and pecking at corpses.

To name a few details.

yes, i can bear witness to the tarantia thing. i have also seen horses in some stalls, and im sure i have seen other things that dont come to mind atm (since i wasnt really looking for that kind of thing) but once i get a few more hours in the game i could say more.
