With WoW graphics. It's been so hard to find a good pvp game with the smooth graphics of WoW.

Well I think the next MMO from Blizzard is going to be World of Starcraft so maybe it'll be their 3rd.

Starcraft 2 isn't even out right now. I doubt it's that.

Since they were probably starting on WOW when they made Warcraft 3 I wouldn't doubt it.  Warcraft 3 came out in 2002 and WOW came out in 2004.  Thats probably why they're keeping the idea quiet because they want Starcraft 2 to come out before they mention WOS.

IGA Worldwide Partners with id Software on Forthcoming QUAKE LIVE title

IGA Selected Exclusive Provider of Advertiser Sponsorships; In-Game Brand Integration Opportunities within Revolutionary QUAKE LIVE Portal

San Francisco, CA- February 19, 2008 -IGA Worldwide Inc., the leading independent in-game advertising network announced today from the 2008 Game Developer Conference that it has partnered with id Software to manage all advertising, sponsorship and creative branding opportunities within the forthcoming QUAKE LIVE web site and free-to-play version of the popular QUAKE Arena multiplayer action games.

"IGA understands game developers and game players which makes them the perfect partner for QUAKE LIVE. Whether it's been the ease of implementing their SDK or just their excitement about QUAKE LIVE, they have been fantastic to work with," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software. "As we work to bring QUAKE-style deathmatch excitement to the masses, IGA has fully supported our vision."

"id Software is among the proverbial godfathers of modern gaming and we are thrilled to be working with them on their first title in our 'freemium' category," said Justin Townsend, CEO of IGA Worldwide. "This partnership is only the latest testament to the increasing acceptance of in-game as an effective, measurable advertising medium and a strategic revenue opportunity for publishers and developers."

IGA predicts more progressive game publishers like id will create what the company has coined "freemium," or free-to-play premium games based on their most popular titles in order to attract new audiences and open new revenue advertising revenue streams. A recent eMarketer forecast estimated the current video game advertising market to exceed $502MM and is expected to grow 23 percent year-over-year over the next five years.

Thanks dude!  That answers a lot of questions.  I'll be interesting to see how they do the in game advertising, and see if its how I envisioned it should be done.  I'm pretty excited, but it doesn't look like an MMO to me.  On MMOsite they said its a f2p mmofps shooter.  I guess we'll have to see how they actually do it..

It sounds like its going to come out in Beta soon.  Its ID so hopefully it'll be a quality game.

This may be the free MMO that shuts up the F2P mmo haters out there.  I saw this on MMOsite not sure if it would be in bad taste putting a link to another MMO online magazine.  Here is the link to the game site but it doesn't have much at the moment, just a line to sign up for more info.

This is an exciting game :)  Can't wait to play it.

I totally agree with you here.  When another company buys the IP they may try and do something different with it, they don't have the same vision as the original writer.  Playing a Star Wars single player game you felt like you were a character in the game.  Playing SWG you don't feel the same feeling.  When Playing Matrix online you don't feel like you're in the game either.  That may be due to the MMO's mechanics though too.  When your in a room full of storm troopers that aren't acting like storm troopers in the movie, or even in a single person game, it kind of looses its feeling. Same with Matrix online, you're walking around the city and you see clumps of people just standing their waiting for you to fight them.  Even though the Matrix single player games weren't good (mostly because of problems aiming and such), at least I felt like I was somewhat  a character.  If free form fighting MMO was made (maybe Conan will be close), comes and the NPC foes act more like foes than like robots stuck in a loop until you smack them then maybe MMO's in general (not just with familiar IP's), will feel more realistic.

Also, everything is a grind, free or not.

I agree.  I've given every game I've played a fair chance (except Dark and Light which I knew I didn't like after 1 hour).  I played WOW for 4 months before I got bored with it so its one of the good games :)

Truth to be told there hasn't been many f2p games that you just have "fun" playing.

Space Cowboy Online (goes under the name Flysis now I think) was fun and out of the box for the first 15 levels but then it quickly derailed. Though I didn't play much past that point so I don't know how hefty the grind really is.

Maple Story, Runescape, Rappelz, Silkroad, Trickster, DOMO, Shaiya, Last Chaos, FlyFF... Never appealed to me.

Though on another note I'm currently trying out the "pre-open beta" of Mabinogi and it's shaping up to be quite a game. Alot of attention to detail that makes it stand out and I actually lost myself into the game for several hours which is very much unlike me when it comes to mmorpgs overall. I know nothing about the end-game nor the pvp content but from what I've seen so far this seems to be *the* f2p to play.

Well I've played Lineage 2, matrix online, pirates of the burning sea, city of heroes, Star Wars Galaxies, WOW, EVE, Dark Age of Camelot, and Everquest and they're all pay and I found them all BORING.

Free ones I've played are Cabal, Perfect World, Archlord, RF online, Shadowbane, Dark and Light, ACE online (use to be Space Cowboy), Sword of the New World, Mentin 2, Shaiya, Talisman online, Rapplez, FLyFF, Last Chaos, Silkroad, World of Kung Fu, 9dragons, 2 moons ZU online and more.

I had more fun with Ace Online (which I play now), Shaiya (I play sometimes), Cabal (I play sometimes), Perfect world (waiting for the US version to play more), and Archlord (play sometimes), than the pay games I've played. And I felt better I was wasting my time with a free game that I know I'd get bored with in time, than a pay game.  So who are you to say whats fun for everyone and whats not.  Just don't play free games and keep quiet.

Well, that's too bad!
They don't exist!

I've played basically almost all FREE mmo's to date. With 96% of them just being crappy Korean clones, there's really no point in searching for a good free online game. It's sad to say it, but honestly, RUNESCAPE is better than half the damn generic games being released! At least it has its own style and a lot of things to do...

From now on, never again shall I ask if a good free MMO exists, for the fact of the matter is: they simply don't. If you'd like me to be a bit more specific, I'll overview some free mmo's I've played...:

Runescape- As if you didn't already know, a 3D Browser-Based MMORPG using Java. The graphics are obviously atrocious, as the resolution is particularly unbearable for those that are used to their games not completely pixelated, and the textures are very blocky and ugly. It's also a major lag-fest; While system performance is not an issue, there is a lot of lag between the servers. Nevertheless, it's a great starter for people who are first trying out MMO's and just want to get the feel of it. With a large array of skills and quests, one definitely can't complain that there's no content... But the gameplay in general gets very repetitive and boring quickly. Even if you get addicted like I once was, there comes a point when you realize that you were having absolutely no fun playing it to begin with; your time was wasted on trying to get to a higher level than the guy beside you.

Maple Story- When I first played this, it was a blast. It was a completely different style for MMOs, and a unique experience was very refreshing compared to all the other crap being released. When you reach level 20 or so, you can see the bleak repetitiveness that is offered. This not only draws you away from the game, but may leave many in desperation for hacks. With other side-scroller MMOs being released now, it is sure to become the pioneer of cloning.

Anarchy Online- Go back three or four years ago and it's a great game.

Flyff- How the hell is this so popular?

Last Chaos- It was just another clone, but it had a few things that made it stand out.

Screw it, I'm done wasting my time overviewing these. Anyway, the point is, free MMOs suck; that's why they're free.

Why did you even post this?  What is it of you that people like to play free mmo's?  What you think isn't a good game others may like.  People who complain about free mmos make me sick because its a preference.  You complaining about them isn't going to make the developers say "hay I think this guy is right, we've been wrong, lets only make P2P".  I find most pay MMO's are the same as free ones.  Look at Lineage2, and anarchy online, and city of heroes, lord of the rings, matrix online, pirates of the burning sea, Star Wars Galaxies, Tabula Rasa, and WOW.  All these games have the same dynamic, click on an enemy that walks in the same place waiting for someone to walk up to them, click on them and click a button to attack them, then keep pressing buttons till you kill them.  Every one of these games have  cheaters, and bots, and spammers, and gold farmers.  Whats the difference between these games and the free ones?  The thing that happens is a P2P game comes out that has  something new and it then that idea makes its way to F2P games because P2P game devs generally have more money to spend on a game.  After a game like APB comes out with new game play, that game play will be made into a F2P game.  Free form combat that is in Conan will be made into a F2P game at some point.  Thats the way it works, and you shouldn't complain about it.  F2P games are here and their not going anywhere, so just don't play them and keep your mouth shut.

You do realise that what you're saying is illogical, right?

Say a game comes out now for the PC and 360. In four years time the devs decide it needs a graphics update, so they release one. By that time, my computer is obsolete, and as such I need to spend money buying new parts in order for it to run the new engine. My Xbox can't run it either, but by that time a newer model Xbox is out. So I buy that in order to play the latest version of the game.

Now what is the difference between those two? Either way I'm going to spend money in order to play the latest version of the game. Chances are I'd probably spend more on a PC upgrade than buying the newer Xbox...

I agree and disagree with you.  I agree that pc's become obsolete and a new Xbox will come out but I disagree that developers will make that big of a graphics update to a game and make everyone thats playing that game buy another computer if they can't play it on theirs.

Look at Eve, their graphics update can be played on the same computers, and Funcom said that they're going to try and make it so players can still play the new graphics update to AO.  If they make a new game like Lineage and Lineage 2 thats one thing but to make a graphics update thats that huge of a difference and make everyone who has an older computer update their computer is suicide.  Think of it if they make a big change and say 40% of the people have to get a new computer to play a game their already paying for (Only the first episode of AO is free), I'd say they would loose about 80% of the 40% and I think thats being generous.  Now if they make an AO 2 and the keep the old one running like Lineage and Lineage 2 or EQ and EQ2, then  I can see no problems.

With Funcom and AO I think some people will have to update their computers but I think they're going to try and make it as minimal as they can, so maybe 5% of the people will have to upgrade or buy a new computer, which won't hurt their bottom line.

Plus Most gamers buy a new computer every 2-4 years anyway.  A lot of Xbox players will buy a new Xbox every time a new one comes out so it kind of evens itself out anyway.

It limits the lifespan of the game to a console released Q4 2005.  In 3 years the game will have to adhere to the 360, in 10 years it still has to work on the 360.  This applies to any sort of cross-platformed game.  It will have to adhere to the consoles specs down the line.  This means if they wanna make a graphical update in 5 years.  They cannot exced the specs on the 360, and in 5 years we could see computers with 10+ times the power of the 360.  Either that or dual develop the client which is just costly.

With a PC Only game, when you release an expansion you can raise the specs.  Then use a LOD iteration on the unexpanded users.

Who said they can't do graphic updates and they have to keep up with the 360?  In a couple years if they want to do a graphical update they can branch the games off and do a graphical update on the PC.  Nothing is stopping an update in graphics.  Plus what MMO really does graphic updates, WOW still has the same graphics, so do most older MMO's.  I mean AO is doing a graphics update after what 6 years?  The only thing I see is that they'll probably make more content for the PC since most PC's have larger than 80 gig hard drives and a console hard drive would tend to get filled quicker especially since a lot of games are adding more content like Rock Band, Guitar hero, Mass Effect  and Halo.

You mean you might hire some experienced developers like Richard Garrott or Brad McQuaid.  Why don't you ask NSoft and SOE how well that worked out?   Could development noobs really do any worse?

I've just noticed that most noob devs get over their heads.  Look at Dark and Light and Endless Ages, and this game.  I mean at least have someone on board who has made a Half-Life mod or something.  You don't just one day wake up and say you're going to make a game with your best friend and prey it works.  I have game ideas, but I admit I wouldn't know where to start, I'd be way over my head and if I said otherwise then I'd be stupid.    I'm looking into it, I did a little bit with the Secret Project with Acclaim until I didn't agree with the way the project was going.  Now I'm just writing my idea and refining it and making sure it has the possibility of working because it is a different idea.  Then maybe I'll see if I can find someone interested in working on it, but someone who has SOME experience.  Hell if Richard Garrott or Brad McQuaid wanted to help that would be cool, reason being even though YOU may not think they made good games, there are people who do like them (I haven't played either so I have no say).  See they made games which is many steps further than any of us.  Sure I can go to a school that teaches people how to program games and use them, and that might be ok, but I also think there should be someone that knows the business.  Who can look at my idea and say "hell know, that can't be done now, maybe in 5 years but now no way" or "yes that can be done and its a good idea".  I would want to make the best game I can make my first time because if I make a bomb then no one will trust me my next time around.  Do you really think anyone will trust the developers of Dark and Light again?  Their like poison now.  I wouldn't want that, I have more respect for myself and for the people I'd be making the game for.

"I'm working a MMORPG called Darkfall, and it was announced a bit too early, I guess, lol."

Ummm, DUH!!  A game shouldn't be marketed until you know when its going to come out.  You don't have an idea for a game and some drawings and say "this game is coming out soon" and then start to write it.  This is REALLY poor planning.  If they started programming the game...what 8 years ago...then maybe mid 2007 they should have mentioned the game, especially a new developer who knows NOTHING about creating an mmo.

If this game comes out I don't expect much because its from a first time developer who screwed up in the first place.  If I were going to develop a game I would find people who know what their doing and have some idea how to make it work.  This guy made it sound like one day his buddy called and said "I wanna make a game, you wanna make a game?" and he said "sure my job sucks, why not."  Give me a break.

For those of us who liked Space Cowboy, it has been reincarnated as Ace online for the International version of the game.  For the EU version its FLYSIS online.  I liked this game, it was fun and different.

Here is the website http://www.ace-onlines.com/ for the international version

and http://www.flysis.com/ for the EU version if anyone is interested.  Their both in open beta.

1st. This game is from asia! Automatic crap cause there is no good game from asia!

2nd. Since it's from asia, it must have a ridiculous grind cause every game from there does.

3rd. Anime? There are no good anime games!

4th. Anime based must also mean that it has bad graphics!

5th. Anime based must mean that the game is for 5 year olds!

6th. There must be nothing new about this game!

7th. That means that I do not have to play it in order to tell everyone in the world that this game is utter crap.

8th. I'm going to go tell all my friends ( 3 ) to hype this game really low.

And that is the typical person on these forum's. *sigh*

You are so prejidice, get over yourself.  Even American MMO's have grind.  To say because its Asian it makes it automatic crap is just totally fed up.  What non-Asian mmo is not grindy?

You guys totally misunderstood him.  Nightphantom is a Mabinogi fan, and he was just venting his frustration on a few bashers at that time.

I am a bit disappointed in Mabinogi Heroes.  It seems the combat mechanism so unique in the original didn't make it to MH.  I hope it won't end up becoming another Lineage clone.  Just by the look of it, I still prefer gameplay of the original Mabinogi to MH.

Back to the topic, runescape is a pretty decent sandbox game.  There is really no need to bash it here as both games do share a lot of similarities.

Now that I re-read the post I see.  Sorry, I misread into it.  I agree with you now :)

Of course the graphics will be better then runescape..This is because runescape is browser based and runs off java while Mabingoi is a downloadable game. The same goes for all the "features" you listed in this game, Except for the "complex" AI which I cant really see being all that complex. All other f2p games basically have these features and face it runescape is amazing for what it is(a broswer based game). Although its latest update ruined it for alot of people including myself.

http://feature.mmosite.com/content/2007-11-08/20071108004446159,1.shtml

The second version of the game Mabinogi Heroes will probably be free and it looks to have a REALLY nice look to it and some nice fighting.
