I'm a little confused about this one feat in the Avatar tree of the HoX. I remember from OB that you get a buff "fiery weapons" that did exactly what it suggests, but you don't seem to get that spell at all anymore. However, there is still a feat that claims to improve that buff by a percentage. Can anyone explain this? Is it just fire damage in general or did Funcom intend to remove the feat eventually? Or was removing the spell fiery weapons an accident?

I had this same problem. Finally figured out that when you go to register.ageofconan.com and sign in you have to click on the button that says "use a key to add a prepaid card etc," and just put your preorder code in there.

I pre-ordered mine from Best Buy and was worried about this too. I ended up getting the preorder box in the mail (the one with the code for the war rhino). You take that, go to the link in the box and sign up for early access for $5. If you don't get the box in the mail I'd either call them or stop by the store and ask how you get the preorder key, they should get it to you somehow.

I decided to download the patch and my general frame rates went up but I'm still lagging periodically. It's very strange though...my connection is fine, low ping, and in general i keep about 60 fps...goes up and down between 55-65 but at random intervals it'll just plummet to under 7 or 8 fps for no apparent reason. Anyone experienced this or explain why this is happening? My guess is it's my cpu which is dual core running at 1.86 Ghz (im probably going to replace it before launch) but why would it work fine one second and then just keel over and die the next?

The market may have a lot of  games available and WoW is definitely towering over all the others, but AoC has the potential to beat out the majority of the games right now and maybe even attract some WoW addicts.

Case in point: the people who have spent the money for at least mid-high end machines in the past two years should be fine. My system is a year old and I didn't get all of the latest expensive parts and open beta runs rather smoothly, minus the occasional, though rare, disconnect. And even on low settings the game just looks beautiful, something that you don't really see in MMOs outside of maybe EVE.

As for gameplay itself, I think many MMOs might turn off some players more interested in action games or FPS's. The point, click, wait game style just isn't for everyone. AoC offering up this new active combat system really adds a lot in my opinion and it may bring new gamers into the market. You would be hard pressed to prove that level 10 in WoW was as exciting as level 10 is in AoC. Now whether that will continue on after level 20 and up into end game is still up for debate. WoW end game had it's ups and downs so AoC could really go either way.

Another interesting fact is the PvP in AoC is comparable to what was promised for WoW but done right, or at least in theory, I haven't tried any PvP in AoC yet. The PvP in WoW had it's moments raiding towns or being chased through Ashenvale, but the sieges and active combat could add a new level of skill and intensity that the gear based combat of WoW may or may not have supplied...depending on what you enjoy.

I think making the assumption so soon that AoC will flop is really bold considering the new ideas and potential that it provides. Now obviously potential isn't everything, it's all about the follow through. I think Funcom will just need to have to listen very carefully to what people say in the first couple of weeks and months after release, because even if it's buggy at first, it's all in the response, as I think we can see very clearly from WoW. I really hope Funcom pulls it off and creates some competition for WoW, I guess we'll see.

I got my beta key yesterday and wasn't around to hit the little button that says "start my download!" when I got through the queue. At that point they had closed the offer and stopped linking to the download page and they never sent me an email so I couldn't restart the download. I tried torrenting but it didn't work and the fileplanet "support" (A.K.A. auto-response that's the same no matter what you ask) was remarkably unhelpful.

My question is: Does anyone know of a way that I can still get the game client? I've already got my funcom account just can't get the game.

meh I'm ok being over excited about what will probably be a disappointment. Taking a lot of effort to play the game even for a couple levels kills time and I can keep looking forward to release, distracts me for the last few weeks of school.

I was able to get my key and create a funcom account but I couldn't download the client in time before they stopped giving out keys. I can't find the download page so is it impossible for me to download the game?

I totally agree, I was just looking at a list of some older MMOs (and other types like FPS and RTS) and was surprised to see the retail prices in the 30s and 40s, seems kind of a poor idea to have older games in the same price range as the next gen games. And some of the monthly fees for the MMOs were $12+ while games like Guild Wars, top of the current charts, doesn't even HAVE a monthly fee and . I'm sure their logic is something like...the vet players will still pay to get their favorite fixes. Personally I might be tempted to try some of the older games for lower prices just to see what they're like, but you're probably right, not gonna change.

Do you understand what he's trying to say, blah40000? You said that only between 200k and 250k actively play RS, but in a single day 1,900k accounts logged in. Now, even if HALF of those account were people not actually playing then you're still wrong because that leaves about 1 million people in 24 hours. To add to that..do you think everyone who actively plays is going to log in every day? doubtful. That's a hell of a lot of people.

*I'd just like to say that the numbers that im using i got completely from the quotes in that argument so if any of them are incorrect don't flame my ass off.

and you wanted a mathematical formula...
x=100,000 players
y = people not playing that day
n = number of people actively using accounts

[(19x) / 2] + y = n

EDIT: Ok so my one flaw is the whole "2 years ago" thing but at this moment 207274 people are actually playing...I still doubt that over 80% of the RS is playing right this second.

Yeah i saw that, surprised that it topped the iTunes charts...very nice indeed. Haven't gotten a chance to hear it yet though, I'll have to stop by FYE. Didn't know about the EitS release, sounds pretty sick.

that is very similar to what im thinking about building except mine'll probably be a 3800 and a slightly smaller hard drive but im torn on the video card...nvidia 7600GT or a radeon x1950PRO?

I've got a similar situation..gettin kinda sick of the MMO market, what I'm probably gonna do is go for Guild Wars since it'll have the smallest grind which lets you get into the good content and PvP faster. Its also got that wonderful one time fee so I don't feel obligated to play 24/7.

I just wanna say I'm not bashing anyone or anything with this...just an observation...

I was just reading a post about how there aren't any excellent MMOs comming out soon. It got me thinking about what people really want in an MMO...

Perhaps the problem with MMOs is not being up to the standards that everyone thinks they want. There's not a really a logical way of balancing everyone's wants.

I've tried a couple of MMOs and decided that it was fun when I started but really, it just ends up to be a lvl and item grind no matter which one you play, just like pretty much all online games. It's constantly a competition: WoW you're just grinding then raiding high level dungeons for gear, counter-strike you spend hours perfect your twitch and "awp skillzz" to get the most kills, Diablo 2 you spend your time leveling and finding unique stuff in Hell so you can trade them to people to rush other characters to Hell so you can go PK and duel. Its just what online games are about.

Also, people complain about the game being too "set in stone" and that your action don't affect the world at all. On the other hand you can complain that some games are too open and it becomes a job to run the world. Your asking for realism when you're playing a game to escape reality, it's impossible to fulfill. Going along with that, maybe game designers could come up with a way of changing that...for instance:

Think of WoW, the cities are basically run by NPCs; the guards, the leaders, the traders. You can attack a city and kill everyone but they'll just respawn, same in dungeons and in the evironment. If they made it more realistic then logicially no one would just "respawn" after they die so they couldn't do that or players who want to try it themselves couldn't accomplish it, it would just be barren. Now if you had the ability of actually taking a city without having to control it could make for some stable realism. For instance, you take a raid group and take over Orgrimmar, then kill Thrall. Perhaps after holding it Alliance NPC guards start spawning and fight the horde guards with you until its clear and Alliance traders and such start spawning turning it into an Alliance city. That would make for some interesting RP and realism. There are a couple of problems with this: 1) what if Alliance overtakes all the Horde cities? No more Horde, you'd get slaughtered. 2) you couldn't get or finish any of the quests from there anymore 3) would be quite a job for programmers...capture points in Warcraft 3 is one thing...doing it in a live MMO is another.

Now I'm not saying it isn't possible, there could be some way of having a resistence that forms or they could make a capture extremely difficult to accomplish...it would be hard to do, there's a lot of problems to get around.

My main point is perhaps we need to refresh our idea of reality, people want things that aren't possible at this time. It happens a lot, maybe were just getting caught up in all the new technology that is happening lately and we get futurefever and expect more than is possible. There were games that were new and fun when they came out but are growing old now and I think now that so many great things have been made and accomplished that creativity is being choked and everything is becoming cliche...

just making a point...maybe nothing completely fun will come out until someone gets a great idea, maybe a brand new genre, they can improve graphics and engines but personally I'd rather have fun gameplay than shiney armor and accurate explosions.

I have to agree...I was reading about it in GameInformer and it looks like an excellent game, no obnoxious skill trees where certain builds are "best" its more free and unique. Could be interesting to see a CS-esque fantasy MMO. My only one concern is if its too PvP based, I do love the occasional NPC killing in an mmo...

Yeah I was wondering that myself...i spose that's an interesting idea having Myst as a multiplayer experience.

I haven't played it in a few years but now that I think about it that game was kind of erie from what I remember....I'm just picturing being on an island, alone, finding out all this information about what happened to these people...its like the opening scenario for a horror.

There are a lot of arguments as to why people hate WoW. The linear gameplay, repetitive end-game, bad community, etc. etc. The reason WoW is doing so well is because Blizzard has a reputation for making great games; Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, and all of their fanbase joined WoW when it came out...I know I did. The truth is Blizzard is the Apple of gaming companies (sorry MS lovers) but its true. Blizzard comes out with polished, play ready games that a wide variety of people can enjoy and they are a quite trustable company. Look at SOE and how EQ2 went with their expansions, Blizzard is just a well rounded company and people enjoy their games that's why it appeals to SO MANY people.

There's no use arguing about the success that Blizzard has had. If you had 7 million or however many people shelling out $15 a month i think you would start to worry a little less about doing exactly what the community thinks that they want because you're OBVIOUSLY doing something right. Plus, most of the people who play WoW are on their first mmo...they don't know any better ...

Unless there is someone coming out with a really original game in the next couple of years to break up the monotony it will probably remain the way it is with all of the less popular games and their populations and WoW at the forefront. It will probably be difficult because the market is so saturated with generally medieval games and thats what people like so there's not much room for originality.

Face of Mankind was doing a good thing with the MMOFPS. Very unique, less of a grind, very community driven, but it had its flaws. The main one being lack of content, they just haven't come out with anything new so it hasn't been extremely popular. The only game comming out in the near future that I have enough info to comment on is Hero's Journey. Very unique RP driven system, could come out to be a good thing with the engine that they created but we'll have to see, they tend to be slow on the progress reports, not to say they have any obligation to tell us what's going on but there are rumors of vaporware.

We'll just have to see what happens in the near future.
