What, exactly, did it fail at? Seems to have a very healthy subscriber base and its sales were fantastic.

Well, if that's your definition of vaporware, I have no quarrel with calling DF vaporware.  I don't personally care whether it is or not, because I'm sick and effing tired of elf/dwarf/orc games, but it would be nice to see a game with this kind of formula succeed.

I hope it succeeds. The more diversity the market the better.

The comparison is moot. One is a game in public beta and a release date. The other has no beta and no release date.
You are comparing a legitimate piece of software with vaporware. Revisit the debate once the vaporware materializes and can be played.

So, are you saying that WAR was vaporware 6 months ago?

Not sure if 6 months is the right time, but I'll be specific:

To the point that Warhammer Online was not a playable demo by the general populace it was, indeed, vaporware. I don't know when Warhammer became a beta, but roughly that time it ceased to be vaporware.

Any developer can claim their software does a thing. Until they can demonstrate through the user that their software does such a thing it is vaporware. Until you can play it, it's vaporware...pie in the sky promises.

Gaming, as a hobby, should always take second seat to your life's goals. This is a natural progression of maturity.

So much frenzy for thing that no person in this forum has touched or can touch.

When the game is playable it ceases to be vaporware.

All I see in this is a large tantrum being thrown because other people have more time to play a game than the OP.

I don't think a true MMOG based on the Herbert universe would look anything like what most of you think of when you think of Dune.

Consider the following post I made a few months ago:

What Would a Dune MMOG Be Like?

Vaporware it has been and vaporware it will remain until it can be played.

I believe that those who hold the opinion that a sandbox game would be more desirable to the general populace are completely mistaken.

Simply because you don't see why people would do it doesn't mean it's not a valid and desirable activity.

It doesn't make a better game in my book.

But I'm not a masochist who wants to be punished for making a mistake.

What does reality have to do with this type of gaming?

Bots can only thrive in games with poor design.

That's how we got here.

I have yet to hear of a single way in which a game designer can turn an antisocial person into a social person.

In essence, that is what is being demanded here: that antisocial behavior be "corrected" through game design. It's preposterous.

Which is to say that you are in the minority? If that is so, why would developers cater to a minority perspective?
