Sometimes I wonder if people on these forums actually enjoy gaming, or are here for entirely different reasons.

Of course WAR has not already defeated AoC, what a ridiculous proposition.

What I would like more than anything else is to see both games do well, and for both games to push boundaries in new directions.

Any real gamer would agree. Anyone championing the success of one game at the expense of the downfall of another clearly has issues.

Hi - I am not playing the beta, and I do plan on playing this game at launch.

I am interested however - I always hear how its inevitable MMOs will be full of bugs right up till launch, and probably for the next month after that.

OK, fair enough - but why is this?

These games are in development for years; why is it so difficult to put out something that doesn't crash all the time? Is it the sheer size and complexity of an MMO game as opposed to any other? Because I am playing GTA IV, and that is a complex game... and yet it does not constantly crash on me. Is it that MMO development companies are traditionally pretty small outfits?

Is there something particularly difficult about handling all those remote users interacting with each other? I could believe that... so many more variables and potential conflicts.

But I would be interested to hear from people who know what they are talking about here - why does this genre have so much difficulty in making something that works from the get go?

Thanks

Just wanted to say that I appreciate you all struggling through this experience which should (crosses fingers) help improve the game for all of us when it goes properly live.

I played a few betas before and they are always a pain. No more testing for me thanks. But sometimes the work you put in pays off in an improved product. - and it feels it was worth it (Sometimes not, of course)

To first time beta people: just remember, keep telling yourself, you are not getting a cheap month of play. You are testing a product to make it work better for all of us when the game officially launches. Its a community service you are doing. So file those bug reports and be as helpful as you can! test the limits and see what happens!

In the meantime, GTA IV may not quite be perfect, but it is all around a tremendously good experience, so if you lose heart come play that for a bit.

be well!

Oh BOY did I ever hit a nerve with this one.  I can just see 90 fat MMO loving nerds heavy breathing with my every posted word.

You are all greasy losers... stop taking forums so seriously.

I'm not angry any more,  that was a rant on a forum I never come to.  Yes it was trollish,  but why even rise to a troll?  YA'LL are the suckers for wasting your time responding to these posts!  And I imagine if I check back here in 24 hours there will be 90 more posts from 90 more obese losers.

Thanks,  I didn't see the thread,  I'm obviously not a frequenter of this forum but that thread or article or whatever that Jorgen posted just got me.

I got into the open beta but I'm now a paying subscriber to fileplanet due to this game,  which for some reason just burns me in all the wrong ways and this article was just salt in the wound.

You sound like a very angry person.

I could see this work with a small cohesive community dedicated to RP and some very clever mechanics to track where other people are in the world, and some excellent community building mechanisms... but otherwise you will have a major lack of shared narrative, and for most players a game without narrative wears thin pretty quickly.

One idea might be to have in game journalists who construct a newspaper and 'tv' reports that can then be distributed to other players in game. That could help the creation of a sense of shared narrative.

My gut feeling is that upgrading is probably not worth it right now.

I do think vista gets a slightly bad rap, but on the other hand XP and DX9 are still going to give you a great gaming experience... and probably run significantly more smoothly.

As time goes on, this will change I suspect, but in the meantime save yourself the upgrade cost and buy GTA IV instead.

I recently bought a shiny new Commodore 64, which has been running Attack of the Mutant Camels and Elite with almost no hitches.

It has a clock speed of 1.023 MHz, 16 colors, with 4-bit color RAM, 8 hardware sprites of  24×21 pixels 64 KB  RAM.

Will I be OK with Age of Conan?

Thanks

Tell you what then , you go take advantage of the much better deals everyone else in the world is offering you for your enjoyment. I hear you can listen to the sound of paint dry for absolutely free.

Meanwhile I will enjoy this, which is find to be unparalleled in terms of $/hour entertainment.

I would imagine - and here's a revolutionary thought - that all that bandwidth and whatnot cost fileplanet some money...

So while it may not have cost the full $5 (including admin, overheads, all that other nice stuff) you have paid for the service - which is a service that offers you other goodies in the future - it's not that bad really, is it?

Don't like it? Don't pay for it then.

Personally, I am delighted that so many other people will test this game for me over the
next few weeks to help me enjoy as bug free an experience as possible.

But I hardly think the price of a pint of beer for something a lot of people want to do a massive swindle.

Unless you're not keeping up, it's obvious all the talk as of late on these forums and the official ones is of how PvP minigames are now going to play a crucial role, and they aren't just going to be something people do for nothing.

This raises alarm bells with world pvp enthusiasts like myself who were hoping AOC would bypass the monotonous predictable boredom of instanced PvP, and keep all focus on keep a POPULATED world pvp experience 24/7.

With ANY EMPHASIS AT ALL on instanced pvp, you take players from world pvp, and that's not a good idea, since you need as many players as you can pvp'ing in the world at all times in order for it to be fun and worthwhile.

What is your stance on this? Are you still as enthusiastic?

Me personally, I canceled my pre-order. I know why I quit WoW, and it's the same reason I'm going to avoid this game. Not only does it have the whole Vanguard 2.0 reputation floating around, but now it has this utter crap.

This was your first post?

I am not really sure what this list tells me.

Maybe you could create categories - unique pvp, unique economy etc
