Im sensing lots of self-righteous hypocrisy here.  I can see that Lufkin was hated, but lets not pretend that a REALLY small comment like "rants are for women!" is some huge deal to all of you.

Its simply not possible for people to be that hypersensitive normally.  If you ARE *that* PC, then you've got some serious issues.

That comment was a typical macho jab that is very common in any circle that is mainly male.  I think any guy and all women realize that and arent deeply hurt when they read it (unless they need counseling)

You are missing the point. Funcom lied, then lied again, (PVP XP at launch, PVP patch end June; PVP patch in July etc) and then treated its customer base with mocking disdain. It is supercilious instead of humble.

People are now looking for ways to hurt it back.

This will happen in any mass public engagement scenario, but this is something a little more extreme.

So you're basically saying it's okay to blow every incident out of proportion as long as you have an axe to grind?Besides where has funcom mocked anyone ? If they had it would be all over this forum , there would be no need to discuss the actions of some fanboi mod.

Not really putting a value judgement on it. Just explaining where it's coming from.

It's not about the sexism per se, though they open themselves to attack becase the comment is in fact sexist.

Its that people see material here with which to hit back. As to out of proportion... well, no-one is calling for anyone's murder. They are asking for a snotty moderator to get canned. Don't think that's necessarily out of proportion.

Here is a mod who is alienating and aggravating a dwindling customer base. And now he's caught in making sexist comments. What do you expect?

As to the mocking - interviews going on about how great AoC is working it feels like mocking. Sarcastic responses to valid concerns feel like mocking. And claims that coming down the pike is all extra bonus content never promised at launch feels like mocking. (PVP XP? There are vids still around in which they are claiming it would be there at launch).

The comment is clearly sexist.

It needs to be forwarded to joystiq, kotaku, and the other gaming sites.

Strikes me that without adequate numbers playing beta you get AoC.

MMOs are so complex these days that you need to crowdsource for game development. Invitation and open beta is crowdsourcing.

The difficulty is expectation management.

WAR for sure.

Who cares about wow-esqu graphics if it works.

I am really interested to play in a relatively more open world; public quests; meaningful world pvp. Plus a sense of epic mayhem.

I am worried about boring combat... it seems that has been improving, but we'll see.

Lets assume that all the bugs and so forth are just unfortunate side-effects of trying to make an advanced game. Missing content they wanted but simply ran out of time.

Even if true, Funcom made some very curious decisions IMO.

a) boast mounted combat as a feature of the game, but effectively deny it to anyone for months. (without a war mount, advanced riding etc - which are out of reach of 99% of players - its totally useless. no-one would ever engage in mounted combat and hope to win) They even removed instant dismount for players.

b) create no world pvp objectives beyond sieges, which are inaccessible to most anyway. Knowing how important world pvp would be, they went ahead and implemented absolutely no objectives to fight for in any zone. nothing at all for the vast mass of players who are there a large degree to enjoy world pvp.

c) One shot pvp. Stacking gems, which were factored into combo multipliers. Can it be possible no-one considered the impact of this? That it would lead to age of one-shots? Anyone could have worked that out in a moment. So the only other explanation is that they wanted to institute one-shot pvp. That seems a very curious design decision for an MMO.

d) mini games with no story, no connection to the game world. Why make mini games that many people cant even find on their ui. With no sense of any location of reason to exist? With no NPC pointing them to you, to save something or other? with no reward. weird.

e) Almost no mature content. A massive draw to AoC, in reality there is next to no mature content at all. Why boast it and not put it in? I have not ravished anyone, or been ravished by anyone, since I began. Afraid of censure? You must be nuts - the GTA series is one of the most popular video game franchises in history.

f) Complete lack of meaningful communication with players. How can any MMO - essentially a service industry - in this day and age expect to get by without any communication? It's mind-boggling. Add to this the continued lies. Why lie? You think people will believe the evidence of their own eyes?

These and other decision really make me scratch my head in confusion.

I really think the OP is full of crap though, nobody likes the lag spikes ... nobody likes the sudden server crashes. Thats just the reality of the game right now.

I haven't read many people other than myself defending the game at all but the one's who do tend to be honest about the reason.

Dude..if you don't want to play the game I will give you a piece of advice that will help you.

DON'T PLAY IT

I stand corrected.

There has been no misrepresentation of AoC on this or any other forum, or in the marketing literature, or n any write-ups and reporting of the game.

All that has been claimed by its advocates has been true.

Forgive me.

EDITED: I believe this post was misinterpreted.

I was merely trying to make an argument that if people want to defend AoC, it should be for its genuine merits rather than by forwarding false arguments.

A number of defenders disputed that they were forwarding false arguments. No doubt they did not.

I would like to add that I have had plenty of good moment in AoC. It is not as bad as some would suggest. The combat is entertaining.

But the lies are galling, and the lack of world pvp is tragic, and the performance problems are really irking at this stage - sometimes i feel like this game is hurting my PC, and it is a pretty decent machine. Dual core, GTS 512 yada yada

a) unbelievable that any one thought this was serious.. I mean, c'mon...

b) was not particularly funny

c) to the OP - good effort, try again. Your irony was too obvious - this could have been several shades dryer. And make the subject matter a little more absurd.

a) I would assume that beta testers, probably a more experienced part of any player base, would be more inclined to destruction - in that more experienced players tend to like the 'bad guys' for the reasons stated in this thread

b) I am assuming that when the game goes live, there will indeed be a larger percentage of people who begin by playing order - although who knows, post WoW people will equate destruction with the horde, and everyone knows horde attracted a higher calibre of player

c) as the game progresses, I would guess that people will try a variety of characters on both sides and see what they prefer

d) this will probably emerge in (and i won't guess which) one larger but less cohesive side, vs one smaller but more cohesive side

e) in general, the smaller but more cohesive side kicks the other side's ass, unless the numbers on the less cohesive side are truly overwhelming

f) if one side is getting stomped, more experienced players will start to move to that side for the challenge of overcoming the odds, and the pleasure of coming up from below

g) balance of some sort will begin to ensue, over time. It will shift as times goes on. This is why RvR is fun - things change

h) all of the above may be a load of horsecrap

Can you really be serious? I have to ask myself that... because the constant lag spikes alone would seem to totally undermine your contention.

Anyone who plays/played AoC a lot knows that the 5k lag spikes occur regularly and are undeniable, and the best computer in the world won't save you from them. Because it's nothing to do with your PC... it's on their end.

Since when does network performance and the graphic engine have anything to do with each other?  I got lag spikes every couple of days but you do get a UI to tell you about it.  Again I never died from it so never cared.  Seems more router dependant than game though, going to another firmware changed my lag spikes in game from several times an hour to once every few days.  But then I get lag spikes in EQ2 and CoH too so its reasonable to expect some lag from time to time in an online game.

no idea what causes it, but I know that every time I made a group in a dungeon we all suffered from it multiple times... and this didn't happen in other MMOs I played - so I am assuming it's an issue on funcom's side

and it may be my ignorance, but I assumed that was something to do with the way the game was coded. If that is not the case, I stand corrected.

The graphics are indeed sweet. But the performance still leaves a lot to be desired. And the balance. And the lack of meaningful pvp.

to the OP: kudos for trying to be positive, but - assuming you are 80 - I suspect that if you took a break for even two days you would not really feel any reason to go back.

The problem is that pvp is both meaningless and broken. There is really only so much of age of one-shotting around Kheshatta for no reward or consequence that can keep people interested.

Yep they were a pain in the butt, I havent had one in around 2 weeks though, used to get them regularly. When was the last time you had one?

2 nights ago (before I decided to leave the game until pvp is fixed)

Was with a group in Aztel's fortress, finished almost all of the bosses, but the caster guy up the tower kicked our butts.

We had four or five 5k lag spikes during that trawl.

Both those videos are between a month and two months old.

Why are you posting them now?

Basically, they need to make AoC into a meaningful world PVP game or they are shafted.

It feel lacklustre to the extreme right now... there is no reason to play.

But if they a) improved game performance and b) introduced a set of dynamics that made world pvp meaningful, then it would be worth playing.

It's so annoying watching people commit suicide. They made something potentially good, and yet by their actions are destroying themselves before our eyes. It's the most bizarre thing.

To the mention of DDO.. truth be told, it maynot have been an MMO in the traditional sense but the dungeons were the best PVE content of any game, IMO.

There were real tactical decisions to be made. Mana conservation was a constant issue - none of this constant regen.

It was a very good pve game.

But what the market is crying out for is a good world pvp game.

AoC promised this, and it turned out to be a total lie. Shame on Funcom.

WAR is the next game to promise this, and seems to be offering a far more entertaining world pvp experience than AoC - albeit with more old fashioned gameplay and less compelling graphics.

We'll see.

But Funcom missed the boat by spending too much time on pve, switching to pvp content too late, and was forced to make up big fat lies about pvp content. Not only that, but it has continued to make up lies to this day, including Comical Ali-level claims of moving from strength to strength.

Forums did not kill this game.

Bad perfomance, a lack of world pvp content, completely messed up stats and gear, as well as a procession of never ending lies killed this game.

Seriously, the only solution at this point for people who see potential in AoC is to cancel and come back later. Maybe they will fix it. I hope so. But for now it's all about WAR.

I hope you guys see this comment. Reason you guys are getting FPS lag on high-end machines is because the Client is still in Debug mode. Its using tons more resources than it should because its logging information its running checks and stuff that normally wouldn't run on gold versions. So I have no doubt they will fix the FPS lag because they just need to remove the client from Debug mode and such.

of course, they are actually running a debugger in Age of Conan more than two months into live.
