IMO, it's very much worth $40.  I almost didn't buy it after reading the threads on this forum.  After playing it for awhile i'm really enjoying it.

I expected to see a whole bunch of crashes.... only once in 35 levels that I really can't even blame on the game.

I expected crappy performance.... other then the 'hitching' problem that gets very annoying at times the game runs fine.  I have it loaded on 2 computers... an off the shelf HP with a crappy nvidia 7500LE graphics card and my gaming maching (2 8800gt sli liquid cooled).  The HP runs it well enough to play on low while the gaming rig runs around 60fps on ultra-high.  I must say thats pretty much as expected.

LOTRO is a very pretty game (lifetime membership here) but it can get boring.  it's a shallow game with eye candy to the extreme.

Vanguard might not be as pretty in 'some areas',  (IMO, Vanguard has better trees, grass but LOTRO kicks its arse in character looks and the detail on buildings.... this is on the gaming rig with dx10 (lotro) enabled and everything on as high as it can go.

Longevity wise Vanguard has ( once again, in MY opinion ) LOTRO beat by an amazing amount.  The sheer size and depth of gameplay is amazing.  While still very 'casually playable' vanguard just has a lot more to do in it.

In the end my money spent on LOTRO kept my attention for around 2 weeks ( played time - level 50) and Vanguard has already doubled that and I havent even scratched the surface( level 35 now).

I feel I got my moneys worth more out of vanguard the LOTRO. ( once again.... my opinion ).

I'm not a 'fanbois' of either as I'm waiting for Warhammer and darkfall(maybe...someday).

LOTRO is like a ferrari with a 4-cyl..... pretty but not much under the hood.  Vanguard is more like a Muscle car with a blown 502 and nitrous...a bit cranky, not quite as pretty, but much more there.

Different players will get different mileage out of either of em.  BOTH (IMO) are worth the money. Either way if you can't afford either of them then you might want to think about getting a second job versus playing a MMO.

Pal

I like this reply, well put and not all flamey.. but I do disagree with one thing, the size of LOTRO will eventually be enormous, and might maych or surpass VSoH at some point...maybe

Not sure, I was reading that it's running okay now, but I'll know more in a few hours...about to hit a bowl and do some logging in!

Sarkon is it?  I'm just wondering if anyone here plays on it and if you could give me a bit of info about the pop #'s.

I'll be starting later and would love to play on the PvP server, but Seradon is my second choice if it's too quiet there..or maybe I'll just use both.

IYO, exactly.

And I wouldn't argue with you about it, if $20 is too much for you, than it's too much.  Whereas $50 might be just right for me, I guess I'll see after I give it a go.

And just for the sake of being honest I'll come back to this post and let you know how I feel about the game.  I might come back and decide that you are right and $20 is too much.  But TBH I doubt it, $20 is nothing really and I've bought crp games for more.

Because with most people on mmorpg and other forum sites don't understand is 99% of all gamers dont use sites like this, they walk in the store and read the back of the box, if it sounds good they buy it.

SOE just loves the income, cause its the same with EQ2, every time they come out with an expansion its like a new game.

That and anyone with half a brain wouldn't let nyone else decide for them what they like or don't like.  This is the benefit of free trials/buddy keys, so we can test these games before we purchase.

Honestly, if I gave a crap what people say on this or any other site, and if I even listened to it all a wee bit, I would have missed out on some good gaming fun.  For instance I love playing LOTRO, and I still enjoy WoW.  According to some here I shouldn't be enjoying either as much as I am, so in summary - I could care less what all of you like or don't like, I sift through the posts mainly for amusement.

Later today I'll get home and start my VSoH 10 day trial, and then I'll know how I feel about the game.  I could care less what the current selling price of the unit is, it won't change the game for me.

Got it, thanks!

about 15 minutes left and I'm in...but I wish I wouls have waited to start the key, I'm dedicated to spending the next 36 Hrs with my woman...which I'd rather do anyway of course, but I'm a dummy and now losing 2 free days.

If it runs well and I enjoy it I'll buy it though, so I guess it doesn't matter really.

Thanks though, I appreciate the key.

I currently play EvE and EQ, EQ is a nice change, gives me a chance to scratch that fantasy itch while I wait for the new stuff that's coming. Not to mention 15 day skill training sessions in EvE.

I kinda missed the boat with EQ, my first MMO being EQOA. Once I got a decent computer, my first MMO ended up being SWG pre-NGE. I have played everything else since. So i figured, I might as well try EQ.

I just finished Gloomdeep today, and am currently in PoK. I am having a blast and am looking forward to doing more in the game. Once I got out of the mines, I felt like I was back in love. Sure the graphics are simplistic, but with 14 expansions, insanely huge gameworld,  the scope of the game is astounding, and it's tried and tested. I am happy to be an EQ Noob.

Now only if they can add some Logitech G15 Support!!!!  8^)

PS - i need a guild :)

Same with myself, EQOA first then went straight to SWG...and from there everything else except EQ, which I dloaded last night - doesn't support widescreen and I had resolution issues so took it off my drive.  TBH it does look terribly dated and the only thing that really drew me in was the theme song.. I love that song.

They are both better, but at the same time, both worse...and both contain varying amounts of sickness and dopeness, and pvp.

If you want guaranteed pvp go to lotro, Ive found too much running in eq2 to ensure action when you want it, but on the other hand lotro's pvp is unique in it's design and may not appeal to you, although it is expanding in the future and will continue to do so.  eq2 does have pvp-ruleset servers, lotro does not, just one large quest-driven zone per server.  To be completely honest most of my pvp experience in lotro was beta so I can't make recent comparison, but I do know that I used to go nuts trying to find a decent fight in eq2.

summary is what you like will determine what you find better, so play the trials.

Looks good, only concern is that two handed weapons are coming into the picture...really don't want to see Guardians w/o a shield....heh in WoW I played a cleric and it was very frustrating to form a group with a "tank" and find they were setup for soloing...they were hell to heal.

Unless you play a Guardian it doesn't matter what you want or don't want to see.

We already have 2h weapons btw, and the stance addition is so we can do actual damage if we aren't MT or if we are in the moors.

And no, there are no clerics in WoW.  And even the PUG's in that game usually don't take a tank that isn't set up with a shield.  Regardless, don't bitch about the way people choose to play their chars, either group with them or don't but let them spend their money the way they see fit.  You almost sound like one of those goofs who always has to complain about other peoples specs or gear setups.

I RP, it's just playing a role, simple.  It doesn't have to have any relation to pnp or even video games, it just infers that one is in some way acting out the role or archetype of whatever they choose.  And the funny thing is that everyone who plays a video game is RP'ing.. especially MMO(RP)G's.  Just tell someone who doesn't game that for ten hours a day you are a warrior with epic gear leading raids through Kara, and a top ranked Gladiator...or whatever game you might be playing.. and see what they think you are doing.  If you aren't playing a role, noone is.   It's just funny to me that anyone who games heavily would even try to insult another for using a language in chat more suited to the story of the game.  meh whatever

I'm on Elendilmir, and have no problems, people have been great all along and even PUGs are running for fun...not sure why you are having these problems.  I'd recommend looking for a Kinship to start, it's a good way to build ingame friendships and fellowships.

Good luck!

Of course, people are expected to have at least some time off over Christmas, so the bug fixing there due to the patch would be slower).

I am personally expecting the next patch to be 8th January (provisional) as that would still fit in with the 2 week schedule (just missing one patch though)

Crazy, you only wrote 'patch' 6 times but when I was reading it I could swear it was like a dozen or so...

It's like an optical illusion with werdz!

LOTR is for ppl who log on and play 1 hr a day.

Or a few hours even.  But so what?  12 hour a day MMO's are for people who canny get laid... I'll keep my regular sex life and enjoy my 2-3 hrs of gaming a day, thanks.

So you have sex 9-10 hours a day?

2-4, and 8 hours working, 1 hour travel to and from, 1 hour eating, 30 minutes running, 1 hour at the gym, a few hours left for gaming and then some sleep...there's no way I could play the way I used to with this lifestyle.  I would be forced to compromise several parts of my routine, and the only things I could take out would be the sex and the working out.  Now if someone is currently engaged in the 10-14 hr a day playstyle and maintianing a full-time job, which I have done in the past, it's safe to say that they are neglecting their health and sexual activity.  If it's by choice then my above comment doesn't apply, but if it isn't by choice then...

If the day comes when I'm not getting it anymore, you can bet your epics I'm going to be playing a hell of a lot.

And hey, if you like gaming more than other forms of social interaction, more power to you, I think gaming is just as valid as anything else.  Even moreso in many cases.  I'm not trying to even suggest that choosing to play over dating or physical relationships is a bad thing.  It can be a cerebral experience matching, and in some cases surpassing those you feel in rl.  All I was saying is 12-hr a day games are for people who canny get laid.

no i think your wrong there could be other reasons why someone plays so much each day.  Your theory is that someone plays that  much each day they are sad and cannot ge laid. Have you considered the people that are maybe disabled or what not.?

Yes I have considered them.. but even still a disabled person playing 10-12 hours a day is 'retarded'.  There is no disability that justifies sitting at a pc 10-12 hours a day.. except possibly agoraphobia.  If you are smart enough to play any of these top MMO's for a sustained period day in and day out you are capable of succeeding at other tasks.  And no I don't think gaming is hard, but stupid people do suck at it.

And where did I say anything about people playing because they are "sad" and cannot get laid? I just said cannot get laid... some people are happy not having that type of contact.  If you read on you will see that I also said it's okay to not get laid.. but if you are getting laid, and keeping yoursefl healthy, you aren't playing an MMO 10-12 hours a day.
