Depends on what a person is coming to this game for.

Myself one of the attractions is the more realistic approach to the world, which also means the skies being earthlike.

I've played TBC, the skies are amazing, but different.  Apples and oranges.  A better comparison would be between EQ2 or VG, games that are trying to emulate something more similar to our own sky.

IT'S LIKE THIS:

YOU GET DEFEEATED AND KNEEL, ARE UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING WITH YOUR CHARACTER AND THE SCREEN GOES FUZZY.  THEY TELL YOU YOU HAVE BEEN DEFEATED AND YOU ARE GIVEN AN OPTION TO "RETREAT", THE OTHER OPTION BEING TO WAIT UNTIL THE TIMER IS UP IN CASE SOMEONE COMES ALONG TO BRING YOU OUT OF YOUR SHOCKED STATE OF MIND.

WHEN YOU RETREAT, OR WHEN THE TIMER RUNS OUT, YOU ARE LOADED EITHER TO YOUR BIND POINT OR A LOCAL 'SAFE-SPOT' THAT YOU HAVE 'RETREATED' TO, WHICHEVER IS CLOSER.

SAME MECHANICS AS MOST GAMES BUT WITH A MORE REASONABLE EXPLANATION.

THERE IS ALSO AN EFFECT ON YOUR STATE ON MIND (ABILITY TO PERFORM IN BATTLE) FOLLOWING THE DEFEAT.

Yes, power-levelers, hardcore gamers and uber leets PvP'ers will hate this game.

Its all story driven PvE quests.

LOTRO doesn't need everyone to like them.

Gee, the 7 servers that they are starting with, are going to be bad enough on friday with 60,000 pre-order customers trying to login.

I think they are starting with more than 7, they just pre-announced the first 7 names they decided on.  I'll search rof a link, I may be wrong.

And I think it can apply to all types of, theres enough sideways development (achievements, deeds, etc) on top of the exploration anhd quests to keep a person busy, possible enough for the hardcore.  I play usually 8-10 hrs a day, I work full-time so I am limited there, but from beta I found there to be alot I wanted to accomplish.

With the addition of housing down the road, and the current evolution of the music mechanics, LOTRO even has something for your sandbox gamer.  I'm sure we'll see more here too.

Also there were alot of PvP-only players who spent most of their time in ettenmoors awaiting freeps, with a larger population on the way we'll see long sieges, and with expansion, PvP might prove to be a huge draw.

All of this is of course in addition to the fun quest lines.  Rereading the books again now, and it's interesting to step right into the game and see all of the connexions.   They've done an amazing job tying it all together, and I had to stop myself from getting into too many quests.  The few I did were good enough that I decided to save the rest for release.   I'm usually the guy who skips over the quest text, but I decided to take the time to read into the lines and some are very well written.

I understand i may have offended you guys by consuming your 4.5 seconds to post "DO MORE RESARCH! THERES PVP!"  but what i am trying to highlight is the fact that pvp seems TO ME to be put on the back burner, where as I prefer a more forfront aproach to it. The purpose of the post was to try and get some insight into your guys reasons to play since it obviously isnt for pvp. Instead you all have resorted to childish flaming in an attempt to defend the game.. in which i never was attacking.. just questioning

You'd have to give it a try to decide for yourself on LOTRO's PvP.  Some enjoy it, some don't.

I love it and am eagerly awaiting May so I can build my MP's up.

The gear will play a part, as your good characters will use said gear in battle, and it will make a difference.

Open Beta starts soon, get in on it (it's free) and see how it works for you.

--If I sounded angry it's just because of the initial remarks you made in the other thread about 'carebear game' and another WoW, etc.  Sounded very trollish to me, and I don't like trolls.  But if you are seriously interested in the game I retract my heated remarks and invite you to come enjoy middle-earth with the rest of us.

OK, I'm confused, and not embarassed enough not to ask.

I was in CB and based on that I pre-ordered from EB.

Now, how exactly do I get into Open Beta Friday? Am I supposed to get a Key to register because I haven't received one, or do I just login on Friday using my CB account? Or should I have pre-ordered somewhere else?

Thanks in advance.

If you pre-ordered online they might be emailing your code to you, if more than a week has passed give them a ring and ask for it.

If you pre-ordered in a store they should have a pre-order disc which includes the code.

When you get code, input it into your Turbine account and you will be set to go.

EDIT:  I preordered from EB as well, but instore.  They didn't have the discs in so I called EB Cust Service and they emailed me a code.  It shouldn't be a problem for you to do the same if no code has come yet.  They have a 1-800 #.

The point of most games is FUN, I don't play to show off my gear to some guy I've never met in some country I've never been to.  I play to escape the biting realities of everyday life and enjoy my free time.  I've played many games in my 32 years of life, and most of them DIDN'T have PvP.. but I still enjoyed them.. crazy eh???

Right, so the 6 million+ people participating in 10 hour long raids in WoW are doing it for funnnnn.. gotcha.

Wow, you really don't have a leg to stand on in this argument do you..

My work is done here.

Well whats the point of investing hundreds of hours of fighting and raiding along ur fellow players to aquire items of power and rarity... if u cant show it off  "hey man come on this quest and watch how strong i am when i kill the boss"... PVP allows you to demonstrate ur skills and ur time investment

I could go for a game of Qbert right now!

But aside from that.. you still think that LOTRO has no pvp?

EDIT:  Just a comment on the topic of this thread.. you are asking us to tell you why we like it.. READ SOME OF THE OTHER THREADS ON THIS BOARD AND YOU WILL FIND PLENTY OF INFORMATION.  IF YOU HAD DONE THIS YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE MADE THE MISTAKE OF THINKING THIS GAME HAS NO PVP.

Players play good character, players play mordors minions, these same players fight each other.. so what are you talking about?

So i was wondering what you're guys reasons are for playing this game... other than "DOOD its LOTR!"

You sure you have the right game?

So im asking do you think I will like this game if I liked eq1 eq2 and wow? I just didnt like the hardcore playing of all the games and the community of wow. Another possibility is alot of people always look for the negative in games and fail to see the positive so maybe its just them.

I recommend reading the boards.

It wasn't written because it is your opinion.

Was just thinking.. poor Charles Norris.. I mean this guy has half the gamers of the world hating him and he probably doesn't even know what an MMORPG is.

I think it's time to give Chuck a break.

I'd like to offer this vote/petition as a way of slowly eliminating all Chuck animosity from the world of online gaming.

It's not going to happen overnight, but with time we may see some positive change come about.

I think all he is asking is , yes, when you do hit top level, is there anything in the game to keep you playing?

Many MMORPG's out there have a very limited endgame to it. Hit max level and then do the special quests in groups over and over again until you get the great loot to be able to kill better and faster when you do the same quest again with another group.

Are there things to do besides just quests to level up. Such as guild stuff, tools to provide player intrigue. Is dropped loot better than crafted loot? Is there a reason for someone to run a business as a crafter and be happy doing so? Or is everyone able to craft their own stuff.

I'm looking at getting this game myself, but with the disappointment of so many games out there, I fear this may be another let-down. I hope not...I will definitely give it a chance.

I'm talking about the other business.. I got the main question but he is basing it on a misunderstanding of the game if he thinks his main characters aren't usable in PvP.

Its hard to say what server will have less "kiddies" at this point. Other than the un-official RP server Landroval which will be very high percentage of RP folks. Although if RP is not your thing, that server might be a bad choice.

-Allegria

In beta rpers annoyed the hell out of everyone. Trying to police the OCC chan lmao. The vote to make Landroval the RP server got like 200 votes. They going to have like 10k of people at launch. These RPers love telling everyone what to do. Think its not goint to go well for them.

Generalize much?

So a few people got nitpicky in chat and you have a hate-on for RP'ers?

Cool.

...and for the record I was never annoyed in beta.. truth be told I have no idea what you are on about there.. probably a 2 minute argument you got into in /ooc or something that you are holding a grudge for.

Nope, no fight. Just what I witness over the beta.

If you were in beta, how could you not know the mechanics of PvMP.. I'm referring to the other thread in which we are quoting each other.. which is really fun btw, for serious.

If players can not pvp with their end game toons, what will be the incentive to play that toon? Raid large monster and kill them a little faster with better gear? Since we got monster play I won't be using my gear on my main toon. Anyone know or have any clues as to what the end game will be?

I don't understand.. we can pvp with our 'endgame toons', and gear will be helpful here.

I'm missing the point I think, can you restate it for me?

I think you play the monster not your main toon correct? So if you have a lvl 50 hunter, when you go into monster play, which is the main way to PVP you don't get to fight with your hunter.

No.

You can fight with your hunter at 50.. your monsters are seperate and unlocked at lvl 10.. I thought you played beta.. weren't you on about RPers annoying everyone.. if you were in it you would know this.

EDIT: You can actually fight with your hunter at 40.. I think thats the level you can ride into Ettenmoors at.   You will be fighting creatures of evil, the monsters created  and played by other players.
