I don't think they're dying. I think they are the future of gaming. However, I am sick and tired of fantasy mmo's with orcs and elves and swords and magic. But to each his own I guess.

I am actually sick and was unable to attend a few parties tonight.  I think that is overall a good thing, considering the amount of work I have to do tomorrow and the next day.  I have not celebrated New Year's Eve since I was in college and in Europe.

I, like many of you, do not currently play MMORPGs.  After eight years of playing MMORPGs, and in the small hope a developer, gaming executive (decision-maker) might read this, I should explain why I (and perhaps a few others) do not play MMORPGs.

MMORPG Community has Never Been Worse

The Everquest 1 community was always overrated but since WoW, the gaming community has never been worse in 8 to 9 years.  It is common for some one to get flamed.  For a topic to get hijacked.  To write biased reviews of game in spite, anger, and without objectivity.

Forcing Me to Group with Kids Requires You to Pay Me

I do not enjoy grouping with negative, bossy children ... especially when these kids are on ventrilo.  I am not sure what they are doing all day in their (often public) schools but it is not learning character, manners, or even the English language.

Forcing Me to Raid with Non-Raiders is a Job (after I just got off work)

After running a WoW guild for a number of months, I felt a strong sense of relief when I finally quit.  It was less the game but more to do with the community.  I had to organize 39 of them to raid Molten Core, and just to get them to attend was a hassle.  Then, when they did show-up, getting them organized and to pay attention was a hassle.

Perhaps it is because I was both a guild leader and raid officer in EQ 1, but forced-raiding at the end game will not work when the population does not like to raid.

Content is Becoming Linear, Predictable, Boring, and Tedious

We want content that is exciting and different.  I feel like when I play I am required to do all these activities to obtain gear and experience to obtain more gear and experience.

Developers need to re-engineer how players advance and develop innovative, creative, and fun ways for people to play the game.

Grinding-faction is not, never was, and never will be an acceptable time-sink.

I found LotR to be so shallow that I question if LotR would have over ten thousand subscribers had it not been for its title, Lord of the Rings.  Excellent movie.  Terrible MMO.

Content ... been there and done that ... too many times.

Games are Released Unfinished, Bugged, and Service is Poor

Do not underestimate releasing a polished game.  Vanguard has been set years back because of its premature release, loss of goodwill, and lack of trust gamers now have in companies.  The legacy of Brad McQuaid, once known for ingenuity and the masterfulness of Everquest, is now also known for something else as well.

As the number of competitors increase, people's tolerance for buggy, incomplete games will decrease; they will simply click "cancel" to a bugged game and click "subscribe" to a game with less bugs.

Gaming:  Fastest Growing Sector in the Entertainment Industry

Many of these readers here are young, and I will not bore anyone with a business analysis.  We are seeing innovation in games such as Guitar Hero or Rockband.  A friend of mine has Rock band for the PS3, and that is a ton of fun after a night out! ha ha ha!  This girl I know on the drums is amazing.  The Wii's success shows that people just want to have fun.

The MMO market is a bit different than the XBox 360 market, however, and expectations for something more are there.  People want the immersion of a single player game with greater content options.

Best post on this site I've read all year. I cannot agree with you more.

Isn't a single player MMO an oxymoron? At any rate, TR is single player friendly.

If you're looking for a territory/PVP oriented game and like Sci-fi, I'd give this game a try. The above posters are correct, you need numbers to succeed. The drawback is that technically, you'll never "catch up" to someone skill-wise that started on day one.

1) Half of the missions are not broken. Maybe like 2% and they generally fix broken missions pretty quickly but it is an annoyance.

2) I have no problem healing/repairing.

3) Ugh....... the whole "balanced classes" argument. See other posts on this site.

4) This game is 2 months old.

5) True - known bug.

6) ...

7) I wouldn't say it's the worst but it does have a lot of room to improve.

These are just my experiences from someone that is having fun in the game.

EA is the Wal-Mart of the gaming industry. My Christmas wish would be for them to go bankrupt  I still miss EnB....... Can't some other gaming company copy it's simplistic addictive fun??

ROFL now that is funny......... The Sims 2 Teen Style Stuff Expansion Pack gets me more than anything. And the Sims franchise is in there 5 times!!!! Wow!! No wonder EA won't let that crap die.

I prefer cloning over doing it all over again. By the time a character reaches max level, it will have many clone credits. Sure beats doing it all again IMO.

I agree that a game should be fun more than anything else. But I'm not looking forward to WAR because of the setting (WoW-esq) and the fact that EA has this game now. Don't get me wrong, I'll definately try it I'm just not looking forward to it as much since EA got it. I hope it does well though.

Do gold farmers count as part of the total? I'm pretty sure they do.

You have to make up your own mind. If it's fun to you, play it. If it's not, don't. Games are supposed to be fun. You're going to get both sides of the coin asking that kind of question here. Better to just make up your own mind.

I loved reading the OP's post. It truly makes a lot of sense and gets you thinking. But if the "tank" has the best armor and is the most powerful and can do the most damage, you'll end up with a game of nothing but "tanks". So maybe the answer is to remove the tank/dps/healer stigma. What if any player was permitted to do anything but the more you did it the better you got at it? Still though, really good post..

You do get a month free to play when you buy it. Don't judge the game by bootcamp ;) It's definately a nice change of pace from typical fantasy MMO's.

It's like the Orange Box, in a way. You won't play it forever, but it'll be a blast while you do.

That's a spot-on review IMO.

I don't get all the hate on this game either. I'm rather enjoying it so far. Plus... I haven't run into a dwarf or night elf yet ;)  It's not going to topple WoW but I hope it shows other developers out there that there is a market for games without magic and swords.... I vote good.

I just hope its skillbased, has free for all open PvP with player looting, and maybe some sort of FPS element in it. I also dont want it to be a button smash.

An extensive mount and crafting system would be great too.

Oh, so you want it to fail, do you?

Wtf? Unlike you, im not a carebear.

Free for all open PvP (with our without player looting) will consign any game to death in the modern MMO market, because the audience for this style of play kills off its own content quickly.

So the five of you who want to keep killing each other over and over again can go ahead and have your fun on ghost town servers that make the least populated SWG server now look like Times Square on New Year's Eve.

I could not have said it better myself.

I would guess your DSL modem has a built-in firewall and maybe your ISP reset it. You should be able to get to the management interface of your modem (if it has one) to check the settings. I've never heard of them blocking all oubound traffic except port 80 but that's what it sounds like to me.

Ummm no it hasn't.

Now granted WOW is a good game but the only standard it has set is subscription numbers. Besides these forums have been pretty clear of that WOW vs nonsense for a while haven't they?

*Sigh*

I respectfully disagree with you (and no I do not play Wow). I think Wow has set the new standard. Granted they haven't done anything revolutionary but they must be doing something the masses like don't you think? The ironic part is that Blizz has set the bar so high, I doubt if even they will be able to see this type of success again.
