I agree. Eve is a PVP wet dream. PVE was an afterthought for Eve.

I agree - don't get your hopes up. EA only wants people to buy the flavor of the year (Madden 2008, Nascar 2008, Tiger Woods 2008, NBA 2008, NCAA College Football 2008, NCAA college Basketball 2008, FIFA 2008, NHL 2008,  - omg how many titles do they have with 2008 in the title??? - And I'll bet they'll all have a 2009 flavor ). Any MMO that EA owns is doomed from the get go. They do not know how to run an MMO to make it profitable.

Two things have killed (or will kill) WoW

1) No more 40 man raids. Guilds are a dime a dozen now. I saw people pugging end-game content all the time post-BC. That was unheard of pre-BC.

2) BG's. World PvP was a blast but BG's have all but ended that now. And there's no way to go back so there you go. I know a lot of people like BG's but IMO, BG's have no place in an MMO. BG's are a 5 minute PvP instance.

I had a blast in WoW pre-BC. It wasn't the expansion that killed the game for me. It was the changes they made in the way the game was played. Blizz did everything right with the original WoW and I hope they have learned some lessons with expansions. Personally, I think they are just milking it now getting every penny out of it while they still can with expansions coming so fast.

Hasn't this been done many times before? Oh well, I'm bored and not playing ANY MMO right now so here are mine:

Earth and Beyond - probably the most fun I've ever had in an MMO.

WOW Pre-BC - totally agree with you on post BC. And now they announce another expansion. No thanks Blizz....

Anything else that doesn't involve trolls and gnomes and swords  EQ was fun....

Not for another decade at least.

If Fallen Earth pursued a Pre0CU type combat system, yes it'd be great.  But it isn't, it's doing a NGE type combat system.  This won't work.

Same advice to Tabula Rasa...  The FPS combat system will doom the game.

I agree - TR is a nice break from Gnomes and such but the FPS aspect makes it boring in the first 5 minutes.

They need to make a new MMO IMO. They ruined WoW with TBC and the next expansion is more of the same from what I read. Specifically, BG's (no more world PvP) and no more 40 man raids ruined WoW for me. I truly hope Bliz is making a new MMO because I know they will do it right.

When SOE threw years of my time into characters on SWG in the toilet with a horrid pathetic excuse for an "upgrade" I learned the importance of TRUSTING the company running a game I put any time into.

They bait and switched customers, lying many times to their paying players. They will do it again.

The fact they are aiming for kids and girls is the exact same direction that ruined SWG.

Screw you SOE.

Chalk EA up to this also....

I agree wih Stubbing - give me anything where I don't have to swing a sword or shoot magic out of my butt......  Anything that doesn't involve swords is breaking the mold at this point IMO.

Im tired of swords and magic  (being on land in general). Eve is like a job rather than a game. Are there any MMO's available or on the way for those of us that would rather fight with lasers and missle launchers rather than swords and magic?

I beta'd Eve and played for about 6 months after launch (admittedly, haven't been back since). The only thing Eve and EnB have in common is that they both take place in space. That's it. A game where you can advance your toon by not playing made me giggle. People that love EnB probably won't like Eve and vice versa. But if you are tired of swinging a sword, give Eve a try simply because there's not much else out there for space mmo fans. I too miss EnB......

For what it's worth, I cancelled my WOW subscription when I read the FAQ for the next expansion. Seems it's just an updated BC to me. WOW was a lot of fun pre-BC. 40 man raids is what I liked most. The post about collecting gear made me giggle - so true. I enjoyed the guild aspect of taking 40 people to get something done but that has been removed from the game. World PVP was a blast too but that is all but obsolete now. MC and BWL I will remember fondly. I'll check out any new games Blizz does but WOW has lost its appeal to me (same ole same ole).

This is simple - Eve is different. personally I don't care for the game but it is different (and pretty to look at).

Personally I feel permadeath is stupid and totally counter-productive to the MMO genre. You've put 300 hours into playing your favourite character, and then a lag hit causes your death and oh well too bad? Then you have to start all over again, and your friends are all high level while you have to repeat the same content you've already seen over and over again. Half the people you see in the newbie areas would likely be powerlevelers.

It just doesn't make sense to have a game where you can put so many hours of time and effort into your character and then lose it all because of a single mistake, a bug, or lag. Could you imagine playing a Final Fantasy game with no save points? Would people play counterstrike if you only had 1 life per server?

Well said!

Real life has also no save points and you can become a victim of system faults at any time. There is definately perma-death in this "game" and you are basically forced to grind also. Are you killed all the time by high-level players in real life?- No, simply because there is law and order - you just need to ensure that there is a kind of good law and order system which makes it harder for criminals. Real life proofs that this is the way to go here!

I play GAMES to escape real life. (My life has way too much of what you described above already ). It's an interesting concept, I just think players will like it (even the ones that think they will). As another poster on here suggested, why not make a permadeath server and see how it goes. It's definitely a step away from the current cookie-cutter mold which is always good IMO.

I predict there will be more of the same.

I don't think (and I hope) that mmo's don't die out. It only takes one good mmo to hook a player for life - kind of like that one good golf shot. Once a player has experienced the interaction that mmo's provide, it's hard to go back to non-mmo games.

My theory is that you aren't swinging a sword or shooting magic out of your butt  No, I personally don't like the game but it is different in a market where most new games seem to be the same ole thing.

Nice article. I couldn't agree more. The only other mmorpg I've played where players interact less was EVE. Cudos to Blizzard for making it work though. Didn't work for me but it obviously has for many millions.

I would guess they are gaining members due to lack of original/fun MMORPGS to play. JMO though. I too see the same topics. It doesn't mean there's a drop in membership though. I don't even read a lot of topis based on the title alone..... Wait, but I read this one....

Can you say lag? Sounds fun to me though. Just don't make it a 6 hour event
