If the thesis is: 'Wow is easy to get', therefore many people play it. Well, wouldn't that make every other game "too hard". Simply because of the player basis. Be it mmo or single player.

So basically, all games with less them 10 million players are 'hard'.

Don't players wanto think any more? Mmos are in that case turning into braindead cable TV.

*edit*

Cable TV is pretty darn casual.

Michael Scott is by far the funniest character I've seen this year, perhaps ever. He is the show imo. And it's a damn good show I might add.

I wonder if they asked the same before Columbus tried to find a faster route to India? Not if mmos have come to an end, no. Perhaps something like; Our known land masses is "earth", there is nothing more to it, how could it possibly be any more to it?

mmos are not finite, imho.

Sorry to troll. If you feel you got more important things to do in life than play mmos, quit. If you got nothing better to do than try to convince random people on the internet what mmo "is the best" (like me?), quit.

I just enjoy reading this forum every once in a while, that is all.

Played Vanguard a few months back and I enjoyed it alot, found a really awsome guild. Then my month expired and I couldnt pay with my credit card for some reason. So I had to shelfe it, sadly.                                      Then I waited for WAR, played it, wanted it to be the best mmo so much. To be honest it is really boring, and i usually love pvp games. Im not sure what makes me dislike WAR, the feeling just isnt there. The lag, small zones which I rush through, pvp isnt actually that fun (compared to daoc).

Anyways, I had great time in Vanguard and noticed today that i had a free month to play. Im gonna try and reach max level and enjoy my time ingame. If i feel the game can't deliver for some reason i quit, but I think it wont. Even though I have zero former mates there. Hope the EU server isn't dead!

WoW is in my oppinion a soulless beast with the worst community i've ever experienced. Blizzard managed to make it very addictive tho. I logged in for two months doing nothing but BG:s and hating every minute of it. Execpt when you got that crappy purple item after X-k honor, fantastic. Then i finally quit the damn game. Today I caught myself pondering if I'm gonna try the new x-pac Wotlk, then I just say one word to myself, battlegrounds. That usually puts me off the thought of ever playing WoW again.

Okay so first impression now ingame after about 5 hours gameplay. I think it has a very cozy feeling to it. At least for me when I started as gnome (tried some chars to lvl 2 just to see how things roll). Decided  to stick with gnome. This is the first time I also choose an mmo without PvP. I just want a casual approach to it for once. No more skip sleep/school just to able to compete with others. Mobs wont gain better items/skills, mobs will be mobs :)

Gameplay is smooth, entertaining. I'm actually reading quests etc, just taking my time. I don't wanna rush. This game is too huge anyways. So after i reached lvl 5 i got to the first big city, which i btw liked very much. Decided to kick back and relax. Learn the crafting system. Spent a good 2 hours just crafting, reached lvl 5 in that too.

Have seen only one other player so far, altho chat is somewhat busy.

Noticed one graphical glitch, no biggie.

I also read that people with nVIDIA 8800gtx can bump into some random crashes. I got that one, didn't happen once for me. Hope it stays that way.

So far I enjoy Vanguard very much, don't have anything negative to say really. Altho I have minimal ingame experience.

Bought the game few hours ago, installing a bunch of patches now. First impression (not ingame) was abit trouble getting the subscription to work. Apparently the 30 day free doesnt apply directly. First I had to do a subscription with a credit card. To activate my 30 day free time. Luckily it only took 15min of surfing the support forums to figure out.

Now with all that aside. I'm looking very much forward to the game itself. Aaah, being a clueless noob once again. All the exploration that awaits :)

Will do another reply later

I'm very confident that everyone that claim WAR=WoW have played both games and can back up their statement with actual gameplay (screenshots doesn't apply here, sorry).

Very confident...

I somehow wanna draw a connecting line here. Just out of the blue. If the game, say a game on the brink of it's release is based upon a movie, book, former board game etc. The mmo will receive massive free advertisement. Just by it's name. Fans are fans of a reason, they like that book (movie, whatever) because it speaks to them. This also perform as a safety net for the developers. They know they have a fanbase without the game even released yet.

Although I know lore can only do so much to help lift a game. Then what makes a game 'near perfection' is highly personal.

I know WoW is a decent game. WoW is although infesting every mmo discussion there is nowadays. Very often the topic is forgotten and all that remain is the ancient discussion if WoW will die when X is released.

This was i noticed.

About that arrow indicating where to go: Alt+tab --> thottbot.com, oh wait.

I don't mind it. Since I wanto PK and not quest all day looking for "mother wolf helga" rarespawn 2 zones west.

edit: beat me to the thottbot simile.

We got two major mmo game titles coming out this year. Both which clearly base on a long and thoroughly history of it's lore. WAR & AoC. I wonder how big of importance the lore really is to attract new players. I believe that lore somehow connect the player and game better. You feel somewhat more attracted to the game, you're character and the enemies. Everybody wants to feel a little bit unique and special.

Even if you really don't care about the lore (like me), you still got the option to someday read the whole history about everyone and everything. Also knowing that 'this game is based upon heaps of stories' might give you the impression that the game will be better. Furthermore it has several options to expand. Many will probably also want expansions since this let them explore their mystic world even further.

Well obviously this is a trend in the mmo market. To reshape books or movies into the mmo-genre. Starwars, Lotr, Matrix (there is a matrix mmo right?). Of course keeping the player base is another thing. But the game sure did get a head start by only it's name.

Any thoughts on this matter? Is lore one fundamental corner stone in every successful mmo?

There are probably going to be lot's of stuff that won't be of satisfactory in WAR. On the other hand there will be many things which are going to really fun. What it all boils to is that the positive things must overweight the negative ones, for a player to stay. No game is perfect. Unless it's a very old one, you don't play it anymore, only thing you have of it is pure nostalgia.

Just to make an example. Ofc I will take our mmo monster WoW. Just reading the forums there tell me many gamers are disappointed with various game mechanics. Perhaps same person can make 10 different whine topics. Guess what, at the end of the day he won't cancel subscription if positive>negative.

So some will not play WAR because king encounter is instanced? Or because you gain access to PvE dungeons when king is defeated?

We have to be somewhat realistic, my guess is that cities will be captured maybe 3-4 times/month. Mostly during weekends when most people can find the time for it. Many want some awesome award by killing the King. How would it be distributed then? Will only the 24-ppl raid get rewarded or everybody which contributed to capturing the city etc.

Just capturing the city itself and being able to hold parts of it is actually an award. Although i hope that the side getting it's city captured would suffer from severe negative bonuses. That and all the renown points you gain during the battle would be enough for me, and ofc i'd like a renown bonus if goal is accomplished.

If the king was to be open RvR it would be extremely hard to balance to fight. If even possible. I bet that way would generate more whine than the instanced version. A nice random factor to the fight could be that the 6 people contributing most to defense could gain access to king's room and help defend him. Spawning as "Emperor's Guardian" or whatever.

I heard this rumor that people addicted to another mmo are quite objective when bashing WAR.

Games develop and there will most likely be parts of WAR which you and me will dislike. I do hope they can capture that "we vs. them" mentality. Mythic will probably never support X realming in WAR.

As the game gets older and perhaps lose subscribers developers implement various elements and new ideas which usually is pretty crap. It's like the developers lose their red line, something they valued very much while the game still was young. Well, if they ever had fundamental corner stones. (Not talking about WAR ofc)

edit: Mythic seems to listen alot to their players, I hope that will be a good thing. This will maybe help keeping the game what it is supposed to be. I personally don't hope it will be that much of a RvR/PvE hybrid. More like RvR with a touch of PvE. This will hopefully keep the PvE fanatics away, so their voice won't outshine the RvR:ers. WAR should not be torn apart by two totally different play styles.
