In so many words...it is a good Action title...and I sure have been needing that...something I can play for an hour, and move on...

And if I feel the need for the extra's offered with online, then I can pay later..

Overall it is meant to be a mindless clickfest, and that in my book is cool...and way better than Tabula Rasa...the MMO wannabe

Cheers!

Everyone always tries to compare one thing or another to Tabula Rasa, what a joke. This is a completely different game.  So far I've played both Tabula Rasa and the demo on Hellgate London.  I gotta say between the two games, right now I had more fun in Tabula Rasa, and the reason is, because of the increased difficulty in TR, I get more of a challenge. Alot more mobs, and alot more need for strategy.  Thats not to say when the full version of HGL comes out, that it won't be tougher, have much more depth, and be a better game overall. I'm just saying from what I've see personally between the two, TR would be my choice just from the 2 beta tests.

I do agree that TR has gotten boring in the last couple months I've been playing it, but then again TES Oblivion got boring after a month or two of playing it,, I probably will end up getting HGL, and more then likely after getting bored with that, going back to TR, granted they added a bit more content I haven't seen yet.

I think it is the fact I don't have to pay a monthly fee...so if I get bored with HGL, then I can turn it off.

Big difference, and makes HGL better...in my opinion

Can you do me a favor, and post some framerates with those pics also?...that is what scares me..I am worried that performance will take a big dive on Vista...or did you just copy those from somewhere?

Thanks!

I originally posted these on the LOTRO forums since they're weren't any pics availible for it. I have a 8600gts (256m) with a core2duo e6600 and 4 gigs of ram. In dx9 mode i average like 40-50 fps according to their framerate counter. I dunno if it's a problem with the engine but sometimes if i alt tab out of the game and back in, my fps doubles. At least it does for DDO. However, I'll assume that the 40-50 fps is correct. With dx10 I average the same or maybe 1-4 fps slower. There's really no noticable hit for just turning on dx10, and that includes soft particles and the soft shorelines. With dx10 distant landscape lighting I also take no noticable performance hit. As of the last version they put on the test server, turning on dynamic shadows drops me to 20-30 fps, although it dips lower than that. It looks fantastic but i don't think i'd take the performance hit for it. So, since there's basically two video cards out there for dx10 (8600 and 8800), you'll probably be fine with dynamic shadows as long as you get a 8800. The 8600 is just too meek to run dynamic shadows (and the only reason i have it over an 8800 is because the 8800 won't fit on my btx motherboard ). All the other options cause so low of a drop that there's no reason to not be running them if your card supports it.
Ok...so it sounds like the DX10 cards will rock...I have an 8800GTS 640...and with the new benchmarks showing improvements in Vista, I may load a second hard drive with the big V and see how it goes (as I also have Hellgate on order, and can't wait to play that baby in DX10)

Cheers!

I feel the license is there, but the game is boring, and really does not run well for me (may fix that..I hope)

The world felt LOTR...but, then the whole kill 10 x quests proved to be too MUCH MMO in my Tolkien...and kinda killed that..

Luckily, the game is pretty, and if it runs better after the next patch, I may at least try to hit 50 (I am one of the "Quit at 30" club members)

Cheers!

(PS: Voted Vanguard...but, since SOE is giving it the EQ2 makeover...i.e: fixing issues, and what not...I could revisit Vanguard now and see how I feel, because EQ2 has become a top game..)

I played LOTRO mainly because it is LOTR.

That one sentence sums it up...and makes me believe that is why people continue to play this game. It has done nothing new, interesting, and took old tired mechanics from other MMO's ands made them the same or more boring (progress bars indeed...so many, and so slow...go to sleep while you craft..)

Is it the license that did it for you? Also, have you played other MMO's...within the last 6 months have you played WoW, Guild Wars, EQ2, or something along that lines...or, is it the fact it does the things the other MMO's do...but prettier?

Also, if your not playing, do you feel Turbine did right by the license, but the game gets boring...Or they ruined the license, but the gameplay was ok, or finally they killed the license AND killed gameplay

Cheers!

Turbine doing  massive free content updates every 2 months gonna make LOTRO the most complete MMO out there ;)

Dont forget LOTRO launched with less than half the content WoW or Eq2 had at launch, so they are just playing catch-up and also doing a smart thing...., by holding back content and releasing  it every few months as "content updates" it keeps the game in the news,

But dont expect these big content updates every few months for years to come.. it will dry up soon and you'll be stuck with expansions (probably free as its turbins way) and minor content updates every few months.

This is an utterly ridiculous statement. They are not "holding back" content.  Wear tin foil hats much?

And as far as shipping with 'half the content' of WoW and EQ2, again factually baseless.  According to gaming sites, EQ2 has about 2500 quests NOW.  LOTRO launched with over 2600, and since then has added a lot more.

And yes you CAN expect these large content updates in the future.

Of course the flip side of this argument is that Turbine could have over-promised and ended up like Vanguard.

Here's a novel thought:  Maybe, just maybe, Turbine delivered exactly the amount of polishde content that was possible within their budget and manpower to deliver. Maybe it's the MMO community (specifically some here) that have unrealistic expectations, even delusional expectations, regarding what MMO companies can deliver.

According to Allakhazam, it's more like 3752 for EQ2 and 1300 for LOTRO.

Your sources are?

Not to mention that most of LOTWOW online quests are kill another 300 boars/wolves bears. *yawn* Oh wait I forgot the rest are those awsome run A to B, then run this B back to A.

EQ2 kicks the living crap out of Lord of the WoW clone's ass.

Lets take into account that...yes, EQ2 may have those wonderful Kill 10 x quests...but breaks it up with "Collections", Gathering mats (and not being limited to a specific mat), the free card game, gambling, the scrying quest, the tradeskills quests......

So, timesink wise, EQ2 has so much more to offer as well..even more than WoW..

Ouch!  You are a glutton for punishment.

I liked the concept and some of the graphics for Silkroad... but I only lasted 1 week.

Silkroad proved to be another game only good for 20-30 levels...it got quite annoying killing thousands of creatures for a hundred items...but, that was the difference. The combat was great looking, the skills system as you level (put points in various arena's like magic, combat) really upped the titles pleasure..it proved to be fun for 6 months...and thats not too bad...

But, yea...we left because of those kill 100 x quests

Lotro is not a bad game at all. Its just missing the hook. I don't know what it is but after playing a week I just quit cold turkey not because it a bad game but because I wasn't addicted to the game. I didn't start getting bored of Wow until i was playing for over 8 months. I was also hooked on EQ2 for several months. But Lotro not even 1 week. Whatever it is that makes a game addicting needs to be added to Lotro.

LOTR:O needs somekind of tallent or skill tree system, so you can choose more different things and not just be the guardian clone number #34237214. This is the reason why LOTR:O is not "addictive" for me.

Sure theres traits but the low number of them is making it pointless.

Characters also feel weak... getting killed by a badger is great fun for some i guess

Careful what you say here...I got reamed for saying the bears kill ya all the time...as they are quite nasty in this game for some reason...as a matter of fact, bears in all games are nasty

Me scared of bears....all bears must DIE!

Where is my trait for Bear deaths....lol..

I can't ... BEAR ... to die...(sorry...bad pun)

Cheers!

I'm not really seeing that characters feel weak.  My loremaster is only 14 on the trial account but I was able to solo a level 14 elite who had two level 11 helpers for a group quest, fixing Falco's Folly.  I mean I had 14 hitpoints left at the end but that is because I was saving my mez and cutting it too close.

That is more powerful than a comparable EQ2 or WoW character at that level.  Maybe it changes by 30.

EQ2, level 23 Paladin, fighting 5 Centaurs...1 level below....and had the power to heal and kill...or better yet, runaway if I have to...

But, in LOTRO, one Bear could almost totally kill you at your level...that does not scream balance...

I also remember healing someone in LOTRO who was fighting 5 guys as I ran by...the 5 stopped in their tracks, and all chased me down..no escape...as there is a feature in EQ2 where the mobs have the capability to be out run, in LOTRO, this mechanic does not exist...

But, maybe it is also peoples playstyles..I felt more comfortable in Guild Wars, WoW, and EQ2 combat wise than I ever did in LOTRO...the death ratio just seemed to be higher in LOTRO...whether that was skill or unbalance...not sure..but, it does seem odd that I have great luck in 3 other titles with similar setups...yet, cannot stay alive as much in LOTRO..

Maybe things are different now...but, when my wife and I left in August, we just overall hated the combat...

(PS: to whoever commented on my wife...good news..Hellgate London just came out, and she tried it out, and had fun..I may just get her back after all..as she also talked about finishing the Oblivion gates in Elder Scrolls (she owns all the guilds now, AND has 500k in gold...and just needs to close all the gates...lol...)

Cheers!

Lets also add...it will crash and burn next to Hellgate as this game has the feel of single player, with no fee's, and a similar style..also, with it's Diablo stylings, and following, it will succeed much more easily...

So, pay 15 a month, or play free...you decide..

You are right.  In a year MS will have out the first Service Pack for Vista, and in a year any issues with drivers will most likely be sorted out.

The biggest problem that a lot of people have is that what they currently have (XP) is working just fine... so why the hurry to switch?

You are also right, in that I had the same issues with XP when it came out.  I waited until the first Service Pack for that one as well.  It was basically the USB functionality that won me over with XP.  Win2k just never did get USB working as nicely as XP.

I am with ya...

Service pack before usage. I build systems for a living for CAD designers and web developers...and I heartily do NOT recommend Vista due to the many issues that exists...

When the service pack comes out, then I will review it again

Thanks for a good post...

Cheers!

Ahh.. I think here we are starting to get to the meat of the topic.

So, given your statement above... Where does that leave you then if/when Turbine does come out and gives x number for it's subs.  What do you do with that?

Now granted... if they come out and say "We've got 2 million monthly subscribers for LoTRo!"  Heh, that would be pretty easy to dismiss.

But, what if the number is above what you "think" it should be?  Let's just say for arguments sake that they come out and say they have 250,000 active subscribers world-wide.  What would the response be?  That number would be on average 10k subs. per server (given the 11 in NA, the 11 in Europe, the 2 in Japan, and the 1 in China).

Remember this is all hypothetical... I have no idea what the REAL numbers are... so take it easy everyone!

So I guess the question is: Do you believe them?

Edit: Oh, forgot to mention.  Thanks as well for keeping the posts civil... well, besides the pot-shots at my English and education.    Heh... just kidding.  I have a pretty thick skin, as should anyone who posts in these forums.

Thanks for having a great discussion. As to your query...I would so be like "I was wrong", and bow down. I would appreciate some facts actually.

I think people believe I hated the game, and that is the reason I post...and it is not the case...I was disappointed, as LOTR is one of my favorite licenses...and the issues I had with the game, shoddy support, and the mediocre play just hurt more than hate...

That is why if the numbers came out decent, then I would believe Turbine would have a chance to make amends and make a great game...even though I know people like it...it is not a "great" game, but an ok entry to the MMO field..

Using rigged numbers to cause speculation and surveys that ask for extra money for services that should exist already also does not endear them to customers like myself who left, and just wanted to wait, and see if things progressed...these are just signs of regression.

Cheers to you, and hopefully we can debate some more...

Again, proven reasoning above. And we have an extra kicker here. I have this number given to me by Turbine...and lets say I have never played, and I log on...looking for 800k people...uh, hello. There is no 800k people here...how about 4 million characters...uh...nope...

Whew... that was getting long.  I'll not argue the other points further, unless you think they are valid to make a point.  I still think there is a different standard being applied, but I do concede that it is open to interpretation.

On the paragraph that I left in from above:

"I have this number given to me by Turbine" ... "looking for 800k people"

Point #1: Turbine has never made any claims to the number of subscribers other than the #2 MMORPG developed in North America... right?  Correct me if I'm wrong... but did Turbine ever assign a number to subscriptions?

No...you are correct. But, by using such an arbitrary number such as 4 million, they left speculation open...and yes, just as Archlord has done. I do not argue with the fact that the 600% is hard to swallow...

But your right..Turbine never specifically did this...but instead quoted a worthless number instead....4 million characters...why say that? They could have easily just quoted sales or something...that would have been better...the whole argument is over the 4 million remark, which makes a company look like it is reaching......

Point #2: No MMO is going to have 800k on a single server... so as long as the server that a new person logs onto is well-populated... then they are fine... right?

Right...that is why we also see so many "Ghost town" posts on the main forums...as we know these numbers to be incorrect. Also a good point though...so let me correct it now

Looking for Group?..Aw man.... who said 800k subs...there aren't no 800k people in the whole game if this server is empty...and if there were 800k subs, then at least 34k people would be here alone...no way 34k will fit on one server...even 20k

"how about 4 million characters...uh...nope"

Point #3: So, it's a given that Archlord is factual with their ambiguous 600%... but Turbine is a "nope" with their equally ambiguous 4 million characters?  Like I mentioned above it's not like a person is going to login to a single server and see even a fraction of the total population since it is spread out amongst servers, and playing times.

But, take into account...the reason Codemasters made this post was to point out growth...so the reason for adding a new server. They did not say...hey 600% growth, that makes us No. 3, blah, blah...The reason for their statement is simply to note, we have had growth, and need a new server. So, the press release was to show reasons and not to make themselves god like in MMO world

Turbine used their numbers to make themselves look almost as huge as WoW...pure and simple..."So, dudes, we cannot tell our scrips, so lets see...hey, across all servers 4 million characters were made since open...so lets use THAT".....

There is a huge difference when a company quotes information to explain something they are doing, compared to flat out battle with the Blizzard monster...

That's like saying... "Blizzard is lying!  I logged onto  a server and there was no way they had 8 million people playing on that server!"  Kinda silly to say... right?

Again, I can see how my sentence can be taken out of context, as it was not written to it's full potential..

It would be more along the lines of a person wondering how a game can claim that large of a population, and not even see an inkling of that...think about it this way...

If you hear 500 burgers were sold at Mcdonalds, right now...would you go in there expecting 500 people...no...but, you would expect a large crowd...lets say 50-100 people maybe..but, then you get there and see..

One

What would be your impression?

All of your points are valid...but, you have picked one game from above to use as your example, which we know was a failure...yet, it went free to play, and could EASILY grow 600%...that is the overall difference...

We just can't bring ourselves to believe even 100k people play a game that is so mediocre, from a company that has had two previous failures...that yes, we will question these numbers...

Thanks for a good post...

Cheers!

Ahh... but see they said "any".  Meaning they are #1.  Glad you think marketing hype is o.k. though.

Actually...the #1 would be YOUR words...not theirs. Also, they did not use an arbitrary number, and claim themselves to be #1. Marketing will always be based on how others see you. For example...a Car company will claim it is the most reliable...based on another persons statements...same here is all..Now, the question is...have you played Roma Victor? How do you know these claims are NOT true?

Well... there are 3 quotes on here that all claim to be the largest.. funny how you don't seem to mind OTHER companies marketing though.

Correct..I have no issue with marketing, if I can see other reviews or companies who can corroborate...and not with faked numbers (Boston Globe...pointing at you with your incorrect figures). Again...have you PLAYED DnL, and know for a FACT it is not the largest?

http://www.totalvideogames.com/news/COG_Confirms_RF_Online_Update_10203_5049_0.htm

Thats a lot...just for 1 update...includes some overhauls even. Also, all companies do updates, and if Turbine would have said, we put out more content updates than anyone else, then there would have been no argument...they do a TON of updates...

Also note, the sentence states "Ensures that"...meaning, they believe by putting out all of these updates, they can be above and beyond...so, they did not state this as FACT.

Heh... again you missed the keyword: "any" But from your explanation you seem to be fine with their marketing that says they will be even bigger than WoW.  Hmm... why is o.k. for them to say that, but not Turbine?
