The last non-instanced MMO made was Vanguard.  I think this is testimony to how long it takes to create a non-instanced, sandbox game.  I wish two things had gone differently:

1.  Microsoft should have kept investing in the project; because still today there are no MMOs to compete with a well-made and distributed Vanguard.

2.  Sigil should not have given into the WoW mentality of linear gameplay.  Because quest are the ONLY way to make fast xp in Vanguard; everyone does the quests; hence linear.

When I look at PoBS and AoC, I see an utterly un-immersive world where you click on portals and are magically ported into rooms that look nothing like the area you just left.  Worlds where inivisible walls and facade are standard.  Games that cause one to bore in a matter of weeks.  It isn't the gameplay; it's the utter lack of immersion.

Umm did you play the game?

  1) Vanguard is instanced. There are instances all over, and you tended to freeze for several mins while Chunk.. urr excuse me ZONING (zones of course being nothing but large INSTANCES)

  2) Didn't seem very sandboxy to me just another poorly done time sink grindage lvl / gear game, but i admit that is just my own perception YMMV

 3) Microsoft stopped throwing good money away after bad because Brad was scamming them. SOE picked up the tab and continued (and still does today) to fund this failed effort. At some point you gotta cut your loses Microsoft is the big name it is today because like it or hate they know when to do so.

On the whole Vanguard is still around, and i'm happy because it gives players like you a place to play. All to their own!

VG has many flaws, but it has almost ZERO instances!

I agree on some level, the vast world and the many classes and races really were good, but too many things borked.

Well, thats a VERY good point: In a SINGLE PLAYER game, there is NO death penality either. You die and respawn or re-load. Both merely mean going back a small step and trying again. Your character IS NOT permanently lowered so you have to regain things. Its just a setback in space. And still single player games are (if they are good) exciting and thrilling. WHY do MMos would need an EXTRA penality??

As you see in the single player example, MMORPGs are NOT made more thrilling by extra, special penalities.

SAEK players enjoy socializing more than anything else, but they also like to achieve the goals within the game. Often, the increase in social status that comes with defeating a powerful foe or finding a unique treasure is more important than the achievement itself. They also enjoy being part of a team that tries to accomplish great deeds, often finding as much satisfaction in the success of the group as with oneself.

sounds true to me ;)

Most player race: Half-Elf

Ok, let me break a lance FOR AoC.

In Ultima VII - The Black Gate, the Avatar could go to the "Bath House", there were both male and female prostitutes and you could hire them for sex, then the screen went black, and you were "leaving as a much happier avatar". I am sure it will be along those lines, so no Pron to be expected here. However, since Ultima was a place of virtue, it was all very progressive, so you could hire a male and male and a female and female. Wonder if Conan goes that far. (THAT would almost be a reason for me to buy it, heh.)

I understand in US sex is a kind of "hot topic". No offense, but it seems to me as European you US folks have an unnaturally tense relationship towards sex. I dont understand all the fuzz about this boob thing and stuff. I mean, it sometimes annoyes me to be too much ocnfronted with sexual themes in a fantasy game, but only because I dont like it to be overly expressed since it tends to get on my nerve for being so primitve in approach.

I recall in a report about the history of the modern stock market I saw British stocks from 1900, and guess what there was a woman with nude boobs and nipples. And that in old puritan England of 1900. Or many you visit Munich or Berlin in summer and see the nude ppl sunbathing in the park and NONE cares. Its just you US folks having such an unnatural relation to the human body and sex, we Europeans, and Scandinavians esp. have a much more relaxed view on this any maybe just this time you learn something from us stupid old worlders, ja ne?

I CAN understand however the emphasis AoC plays on this attracts a plethora of a less than mature audience, but thats more a problem of some regions of humanity having a weird approach with sexuality than Funcom's fault.

There. Never call me a hateboi again because I also CRITICIZE things in AoC!

There is a giddy excitement and a feeling of immersion in a PVE game world in which death stings.  This may be why PVP has such a following.

Sorry but not everyone shares this view.

Of harsh penalites and item loss only the latter gathers any reaction from me and that is more akin to aggervation than any fear.

If you want immersive fear develops should reach that in the story,  perhaps a sound, what a MOB/NPC does, or maybe the enviroment instead.  So on and so forth.

My two pieces anyway...

Very well said! I can imagine stimulating fear like in a horror movie, in the atmosphere of a dark place, but a penality is just and ALWAYS a grind-mill, a TIMESINK, nothing else.

I had thought so too, but last I heard, only the defensive walls and the battle keeps are destroyed not the whole player cities. I am not sure what the difference there is in PVP and PVE servers, tho. Anyone?

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, and leads to hate and hate... leads to suffering."

Collective fear stimulates herd instinct, and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd.
Bertrand Russel

He who fears being conquered is sure of defeat.
Napoleon

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
Frankling D. Roosevelt

Wicked men obey for fear, but the good for love.
Aristotle

If a man harbors any sort of fear, it percolates through all his thinking, damages his personality, makes him landlord to a ghost.

I dont want to live my spare-time fun hobby in an environment of constant fear of loss, fear of failure and fear of grief. I dont like it in RL, and less so in my escapism hobby. I can understand the desire for CHALLANGE and DIFFICULTY, but a game of chess is difficult WITHOUT someone cutting you with a knife everytime you loose. To a sensible person the loss of the challange ITSELF is all the "punishment" we need. Period.

Immersion has nothing to do with reward nor with punishment. Maybe you join some pen and paper D&D group a while. Playing a MMORPG is about a good story, the rich lore of a world, its about enjoying the company of other humans in a fascinating fantasy environment. I need neither uber rewards not harsh penalities to enjoy myself alongside others. It is completely sick thinking always driven by GREED to be "better than others" or fear to "loose it all". You guys should really drop this mind-ruining frameset, let GO of this aggressive, competitive thinking and try to enjoy doing things as a TEAM, to enjoy the moment, and let go fear and greed. It makes life so much easier if you leave this restless mindframe behind. a MMORPG is not a shooter.

Conan the King was haughty and vain
And especially proud of his bloody game
But conceit of that kind isnt proper at all
So Conan the King was due to a fall.

...

I wonder if they will also annouce the record in the deepest fall once people see what hollow world they got themselves into? Maybe not. ;)

A well written review, where the OP gives good reasons for his opinion.

Especially why this clickfest is supposed to be more tactical... maybe for hyper hyper kids who forgot to take their ritalin.

I dunno if this is the OP's on experience, but whoever it was DESERVED to be banned. A game is NEVER supposed to make a sport of continually ganking the same people OVER AND OVER. That not PVP or game that just sociopathic. If he does not realize it, he should not play PVP at all. There is a difference between a war-GAME which is STILL a GAME not real WAR, and cold blood murder, especially repeated, psychopathic mass murder. A PVP game is a reflection of competitive sports not insane aggression. Its like in many solo games where people are said, they can play evil roles and they are dissappointed because they dont know the difference between evil and insanity.

Palpatine or Vader or whatever archetypical evil guy also didnt run around killing people at RANDOM.

I am just surprised Funcom is SURPRISED about it. They brought it in THEMSELVES with all their ruckus about WAR and GORE and evil killing and whatnot. You get what you call for.

Hmm....

Its ridiculous, do you think if a person would steal another review he would chose something more elaborate? Did it ever come to your mind that it may be the SAME person?

What's wrong with you guys? Some seem to have a hobby trying to discredit people at random, checking every stupid post and threads to slander them. Poor, very poor. Either confront what a person SAYS or STFU. We dont need Blockwarts to play private policemen, thank you very much.

And do you know this for a fact?  NO. gets your facts straight before you start bashing other people on here k bud?  The OP never stated this was a thread of his posted from another forum, therefor it could very well be credit being taken from someone elses review.  Close thread please.

Thats very suspective thinking. In dubio pro reo. Its as the juristiction of ALL just civilizations work: not the accused has to prove his innocence! A person is to be held just unless prove is AGAINST him, twisting this cornerstone of civilized behavior upside down is downright fashistoid thinking. Its making people suspects without proof, cornering them in need of justifying them when again rumor and hearsy. Shame on you.

People will tell you that it opens up after level 20. And I think most new MMOs are going to spoon-feed you the objectives for quests now; people just don't have time anymore. I expected combat to get boring for everyone, how long it takes however depends on the person. Good review, thanks for your opinion (I'll say it now before fanbois come in and say "WTF YOU NOOB you can't write a review you didn't get past 20!").

Actually it was a SHIT review in my opinion. Mentions that he got to level 20 and he felt the same. Didnt mention what level he got to or any so called zones. Try the zones from 55 - 70...

Its limited gameplay experience.. Where is the grouping, the city building .. large scale pvp, the names of the large zones later on...

It was a GOOD review, it just wasnt the result YOU like. He covered all essential topics, quests, mobs, combat... sure you can always look at more or play even higher level. But if I dont like a game in the first 30 levels, why wait to have the fun when you are level 70? Makes no sense.

Good review. I cant help to feel like the Wizard of Oz with this ... great show up front but nothing real and essentially its not a big magician but only a weird old man.

For me a vast spectrum of housing is a necessity in the long run. In my VERY brief WOW intermezzo I always felt like a homeless, and this homeless meandering around always depressed in MMOs. I want cheap housing for starters and expensive for high end chars BOTH in a MMO. Ideally non instanced as it was in SWG.

Instanced housing like EQ2 and even more LOTRO is always the danger that no one will ever see it. The LOTRO housing seems like a special waste to me, the places look so beautiful, but all those places are ghost towns, so you need some function, as the SWG player cities had when there was still Combat Faitugue, so player NEEDED to go to an entertainer, which drew them into player cities. Also because of shops and events.

Grow up.

At this point, I think I'd just be beating a dead horse to complain about the "game."

If we constantly allow game designers to lower our expectations, we'll get exactly what we deserve from them.

Congratulations, Sir, you just defined the word "Democracy".

As to the post, well it was the best laugh I had in ages... thrustworthy... heh.

Problem with the spoiled kiddie online flamemasters is their parents don't kick their arses. Respect for other people is not a quality in our youth. The way some of these kids talk to even their parents is pathetic.

No offense to any young people that have respect for others and don't fit this. Also it's not only kids. I worked as a bouncer/security at nightclubs for many years and seen adults act worse then kids.

People need to pull their heads out of the sand and have more respect for themselves and those around them.

Conan, good, or bad, whatever your opinion is, draws the worst element in part to it's nudity, and (to a lesser extent) gore. I hear many times how people think it will keep the kids away, I see just the opposite.

This will draw pre-teen/teen/post teen pervs like flies to dung.

The upside is on a PVP server atleast you would have good reason to attack these pukes.

If anyone has a buddy key throw it my way please. I would like to see if this game warrants subscribing.

Amen brother. Amen indeed. You speak the truth Shohadaku, and you speak it well. Our children these days have become so disconnected with reality to the extent that it is becomming a serious epidemic that needs to be looked at in a serious way.

To often these days parents use the computer or TV to keep their children occupied. They don't spend enough time with their children so they use the TV or video games as a substitute. This act seperates the parent and child further tearing and disturbing the fabric of their relationship. The ideal situation would be for both parent and child to play the game together. This will improve communication between the two factions and bring about a better quality of life for all.

Most of our children in today's age and time are lost. Most are confused. And a lot of our children are scared to death because the world can be a scary place sometimes. The real world can be bad. To escape the real world they go to a virtual world where they are in control. They have the power and they have the sword. You put an angry child in an angry world(AOC) and you get chaos, you get madness, you get sadness and you get pain. If I'm lying I'm dying sugar. If I'm lying...I'm going to hell.

Ichben Einberliner

I worked in a school once, and there are also good kids, so its not only kids, its generally a loss of respect, of manners and a general rise in egomania and aggression. But thats the fault of our days. Turbo-capitalism stirred the competitive nature of people and everyone is driven by the fear to fall behind now. Its just a small reflection of the big things going wrong, there is no longer an escape in the games. They are as chaotic and degenerated as our societies have become, everyone only fighting for himself and against every other. Its not all are like this, but more and more.

Err, what about "dont fix it if it aint broken"? Whats wrong with the current MMO system? Apparently it attracts millions of customers. All those approaches to make change for the sake of changes fell flat on their noses.

Maybe they watch Zero Punctuation's review of Tabula Rasa again, the ego shooter and MMORPG player ppl dont overlap much. Period. Its the same as my critic in TR. People who want fast paced shooters with duck and cover games play Counterstrike free of pay in ANY form. Or whatever shooter is fashion, I dunno. And MMORPG players MUCH cling to slow paced combat, as the outrage in NGE showed. When will they learn?

Besides, the LAST thing *I* want in a competitive environtment is people having better gear and stuff because they are RICH and can pay for all the extra crap. NO THANKS.

Maybe the guys of the Arkham Asylum realize they miss one of their clients, ja ne Mr Smedley?
