But seriously, there's no real purpose for them that I'd really care for....

Get the other things done right first. Housing can be last...

Crazy statement - NOTHING in MMOs has any REAL purpose it's a virtual environement, you don't need clothes, you need a head or arms or fingers or eyes, or a sun in the sky or clouds or grass - Everything is in place to enrich the experience and help the players imagination.

Housing has as much importance as the visual representation of a sword or a horse.  In fact housing has MORE right to be in an MMO since we all live in houses it's an integral part of most peoples mindset.  Especially with games concerned with building communities.  Home is a powerfull concept and can be a good tool for bringing players together and assist in many aspects of non-combat gameplay.  We are building worlds here not just fighting games.

The big difference from a Wow player ???

WAR is being made at 1/50th of the development resources Blizzard has.

WRONG - Blizzard was not the giant it is now when they began developing WOW.

hence no seamless open worlds, but LOADED screens between zones

WRONG - The loading screens are not between zones but between Tiers so you will hardly EVER see a loading screen unless your progressing between Tiers.  The fact that they are there at all is a testament to the increased graphics quality of Warhammer (Unlike WOW which has such low resolution graphics you can run through half the world without needing a loading screen - Quality of Quantity is the key to gaming, and quality has progressed from the days of WOWs development)

hence no underwater worlds.

Meh - and?  Cry me a river.  Underwater worlds wasn't on my list of features I look for in a new MMO was it on yours?

hence no flying units (and Warhammer lore is FULL of flying units).

WRONG - They have stated they already have a 5 year+ cycle of planned updates and expansions and are seriously considering flying mounts as we speak.

and about a 66% cut in the promised siege cities even 3 months before release.

Oh 66%, see what you did there? you turned 4 things into 66% to make it sound more impressive.  Unfortunately the majority of people who actually read the reason for the changes agree they made the correct decision and if you don't like it they had the honesty to tell you in time for you to cancel your pre-order.  Unlike Funcom's deceit and lies until launch.

Those still believing that WAR has better PvP animation : you just type Warhammer video in Google and look at ALL the video stuff you can find.

WRONG -Warhammer's animations have many more cycles and detail than WOW's.  Spell effects and combat effects are a whole magnitude more intense.  Maybe YOU should go look at some of the newer videos before commenting on this?

The argument of 2 years old or one year old or players NOT used to playing were already raised here a million time. Mostly I think the videos are being played by some 80 year old.

Don't understand what your trying to say here LOL "argument of 2 years old?" WTH?

No excuses:  the PvP fighting in War is slow with "gliding" characters and incredibly stiff. Even LOTRO had better animated avatars (and that says a LOT).

WRONG -Warhammer PVP is fast and furious, there are no gliding characters, unless you mean the Magus? He's meant to slide he's standing on a hovering disc.  ROFL

The end result is that you'll end up with DAoC2 (the days are short) but this time with battleground instances (with server clusters lol) and a very slow leveling process through endless public quest grinding to finally come to a "deus ex machina" - a final capitol battle every 2 weeks or so .... of which half(!) will be instanced btw (making the "famous" final epic open world pvp rather "small").

WRONG -Levelling can be done exclusively via PVP if you wish, or PVE or combination of all of them, your information is a complete fabrication.  Instancing is necessary due to the increased graphics quality of the game and help elimante lag, once your in the city it's all one world.

NO PVE raiding at all (unless you want to call ONE instanced end boss a viable raid.)

WRONG -The game was designed from the ground up to NOT be Raid orientated if yo want to sit and repeat RAIDS all day long go back to WOW.  There are Huge PVE camps and settlements that RAID sized groups can take on if it's just big PVE fights you want.  Oh and they are NOT instanced unlike WOW except for the final boss.

Also the fact your avatar turns into a chicken when entering lower zones is a real laugh.

CORRECT - Good isn't it.

The makers of WAR themselves (with the ever present and yelling "Led Zeppelin" Paul on top) already stated that Warhammer is an "awesome"  game and not even an open ended MMORPG in the real sense.

What are you taking about LOL  Is WOW open ended? Is LOTR open ended? Is EQ2 open ended? Is AOC open ended? answer; No, No, No and No.  The only open ended MMO with more than 10 people playing is EvE.  So don't give me that rubbish.

In fact Warhammer is more open ended than all of the above except EvE, since the end game content is forever changing from week to week depending on factors such as which city is being fought over, which level your city or enemies city is at, which keeps need defending or taken, etc etc  Better than WOWs neverending RAID, Rinse, Repeat.  Nothing changes, same tactics, same RAID encounter, same LOOT.  PVP in Warhammer allows for constant ever changing challenge.

The professions are far too limited, the world far too small (certainly after the 66% cut in City sieges) and the end game is purely based on RvR with EVER repeating grind to...

WRONG - They removed the cities and added Huge fortresses, the world is not 1% smaller than it was before.  The world is bigger than WOW's.  There are some Huge PVE non-instanced 'dungeon' encounters at end game as well as ever changing PVP combat, tomb unlocks, armour sets, guild levels, mount armour, city sieges and defence.  That "EVER repeating grind" you mention is the very definition of WOWs end game RAID.

Learn the facts and you will love WAR.

Whatare the two black marks?
I think the cut to classes/cities isn't really a mark against them.  While it is a negative towards the game in general, the fact that they shared it early and had the right reasons for doing it.. are good.

Of course cities/classes is a black mark. They waited until practically the end of Closed Beta (NDA drop) to tell people about it, and they had to know months ago. They were simply waiting for CE preorders to finish selling out, and for a good spin to form. "Not fun enough" generally means "not finished as we would like". Early as you indicated, would have been months ago, not 60 days from launch.

That constitutes a black mark in my mind, and there can be no doubt about the CE/SE preorder being a huge whups! thing for them. Regardless, both are negatives against the game (neither could be construed as a positive no matter what spin is presented).

Sad attempt at bashing Warhammer because;

1.  They told people LOONNNGG before release i.e. months.  (Unlike Funcoms deceit and lies)

2.  If people don't like it they can CANCEL THEIR CE ORDER (Funny how you skipped over that little fact in your rant about waiting for CE to sell out) This in itself destroys your entire argument and demonstrates a degree of honesty lacking in other developers recently.  That's a positive no matter what spin is presented by you or others like you.

Perhaps you would prefer they didn't notify people at all and wait until launch, would that make you feel better?

They notified people in ample time to cancel CEs if they so wished, that is the only fact that matters.  It doesn't matter if it was years or weeks before release as long as they gave people enough time to cancel.  That's a BIG positive.

Open Beta FACTS:

  • “Open Beta” to Mythic does not mean “anyone can play”; however, a large amount of new testers will be invited into the program.
  • People who have pre-ordered the Warhammer Online Collector’s Edition have codes that guarantees them a spot in the Open Beta.
  • If it hasn’t happened already, Open Beta will coincide with the drop of the NDA — Non-Disclosure Agreement — and allow previous and current beta testers to open up about the game. Expect to see many, many articles and reviews at this point.
  • Mark Jacobs elaborates: “As to when, it’s pretty safe to say that we are going to follow what has become conventional wisdom within the MMO community to have an OB about a month before launch. It certainly is possible we might extend it by a bit or even shrink it but no decision has been made yet. And since we haven’t locked in a date yet other than to say Fall 2008…. I expect the NDA will be lifted before OB. Hopefully quite a while before OB. As I’ve said for years, you can tell how much faith a developer has in its game by when the NDA is lifted.”
  • From Sanya Thomas, previous WAR community relations manager: “[Open beta means] no NDA. Because there is no NDA, people often refer to this as ‘open beta.’ But I wanted to be really clear with you guys - we are not planning the kind of open beta where everyone with internet access can download the game and hop in. That’s nutty. Right now, we are tentatively considering having everyone who pre-orders the game invited to this phase of beta. This phase will also invite winners from our big media promotions.”
  • Both North America and Europe will have an open beta.
  • Mark Jacobs expects between 750,000-1 million open beta users (or at least signups, if this blog poster got the quote wrong).
  • The open beta will most likely not include all areas and all features of the game, according to the devs — some parts will be locked up from players.
  • Open beta characters will NOT be carried over to live release, but the Head Start characters will. (Mark Jacobs: “We wipe after OB (100% chance) but not after HS.”
  • You can still apply to the closed/open beta on Warhammer Online’s main page.

This information has been edited.  This is NOT the official open beta FAQ.

I'm also betting on a fileplanet subscribers limited keys job too..

As some others have said all the CE key does is guarantee you get in the beta. There will be limited places most likely offered by partner sites. Indeed it wont be a fully open beta where anyone who wants to sign up can sign up - it will have limited places.

No sorry but there will be no new invites once open beta starts.  The invite and registration stage is for closed beta only.

The last wave of invites is for the final 2 weeks of closed beta then invites cease.

Nothing like it at all OP.  Check out the many fan forums and websites for info on the game.  You have lots to learn and many places available to help you.

I recommend http://www.only-war.com

Its going to KICK COHs ass, the boredom factor of COH is off the scale with it's ridiculously repetitve missions.

The rest of the game is great but the repitition capped the popularity of it and long term subscription base potential!  Bad design.

I am excited about this news, I think they have a better grasp of what this game 'should' be.

I am also very worried about the dual format development, if this games interface is geared towards dual format and not towards seperate control systems for PC and Console then it will fail.

They need to keep the PC interface designed FOR PC, and the console one totally seperate entities.  Nothing worse than playing a PC game originally designed for console, its a terrible experience and will ruin the potential of this game.

Why start yet? - Well I'll tell you, they said their releasing the game in a few months so it kinda helps to advertise a game IF you are releasing it in a few months. Don't you think? or maybe their relying on fanbois to spread the word? lol

darkfall 0-20 million

aion 200k in america and europe MANY in asia

champions online- 300k

stargate worlds-50-800k

earthrise- 20k-4 million

Age of Conan (xbox 360 version)- 3 million

Stunned at some of your numbers.

Darkfall 20 million?????? what have you been smoking? lol,  Darkfall will never be released that's point number 1, and even if it ever comes out of the dark into the real world 3 or 4 years from now, it will dissappoint so many people that it won't even register on the radar of user numbers.

Realistic -   50k - 80k Peak.

War - will never ever see 10 million, in fact no MMORPG in the next 10 years will see anything close to that number again. (This from a War fan)

Realistic-  2 - 3 Million Peak.

Earthrise.  How can you say 20k - 4 million.  ROFL, what sort of estimate is that? Not even commenting on earthrise since it won't be out until early 2010.

AOC XBOX - Who cares, this is a PC forum, but I will say it won't see 3 million active subscribers at any time in history on Xbox.  Half that MAYBE.

Your other estimates are in-line with my guesses. GJ.

Yes, Housing is a possiblity in the future, as stated in several interviews throughout the months.

- Not at launch

- Not anytime soon

- And maybe Guild only housing they are not sure yet.

A good chance but not a definite and not soon. :)  Give it a year and I'm sure we will get something.

The video they talk about will NEVER see the light of day.  Unless they rehash old videos as per normal and call it new.

How convenient that they mention no-one is allowed to visit them apart from a couple of ficticious people who may or may not write about it - gimme a break what idiot would actually belive this rubbish?

Oh and 'local press' may have an article about their visits at some point in the future, 'local press', HAHA priceless.  These guys are masters of BullS**T.

They STILL don't show anyone anywhere Darkfall gameplay.  No-one in the entire world outside of the devs (lol) have ever seen actual gameplay.  WAKE UP fanbois and smell the Vapour!! don't be stepped on all your life.

Scenarios is just more battleground bs with a different name.  Up until EA's take over and pr blitz RvR has always meant massive open world pvp.  Slowly but ever increasingly they have been changing the definition of RvR to mean something more scenario oriented.   In press releases and demonstrations RvR is now about scenarios mostly and nothing is mentioned about open pvp unless someone presses the issue directly.   With what over 12 scenarios that we do know about in WAR not including the cityseige scenarios, it seems most likely that, for those of us expecting open world pvp, the rug has been quietly pulled out from under us.

Actually RvR means the active fighting of one realm against another.

WAR accomplishes this in a number of ways, including scenarios. Because fighting in scenarios helps your side in the overall RvR battle, I would count it as RvR. The problem lies in thinking that this is the ONLY form of RvR.

Having had the chance to play the game a couple of times, I can tell you that the game's RvR goes way beyond the scenarios and encompasses almost all aspects of the game. Focusing on this one point seems to be taking it out of context.

True but that still doesn't change the fact that what has been implied, meaning when one hears the word RvR, has changed.

Yes in the starkest terms it means realm vs. realm.   But what was implied by that term when it was used for the last 7 years was massive open world fighting.  Never before now ,has it referred to battleground, scenarios or whatever you would like to call them.

Nothing 'Stark' about it, it fully implies Realm V Realm.

Realm V Realm encomases ALL PVE and ALL PVP played in Warhammer since it ALL contributes to your realm status.  That is the definition of RVR always was always will be.

The bone? They removed hardly anything, there are still 20/24 classes.

lol we will see.

4 Classes are going on "hold" indefinately, which if that is anything like a beta invite, it could be years.

The classes were removed to provide balance, and better game play!

removed due to time and money (EA)

Capitol cities are cut...

There are still Capital, just not as many. And again, this is improve game play.

immersion breaking. the dwarves are homeless?!

Balance is out the window....  now no one will want to be any race but chaos, since they get a capitol city AND all of their classes

I dont know what your smoking, but I want some. Chaos lost 2 classes, and 2 capitals. Order lost 2 classes, and 2 capitals. Theyre equal.

remains to be seen.

Promises of beta contests and giveaways have all been BS, with no winners named or end in sight.

My buddy won one last month. The guild beta let hundreds in this week. Open beta should be next month or so.

why haven't they announced the winners? fishy.

Pre-orders nation-wide are being mis-handled and people are not getting their codes, and never will due to misunderstandings with the distributors.

Mythic isnt in charge of distribution. This is a problem with places like Gamestop and Best Buy

but they are in charge of the game.  all pre-orders mishandled? funny coincidence.

Is this game in a complete meltdown?  I really don't know how they will release a balanced and functional game with so many necessary classes missing.  Ebay is selling preorders for a ton from people who were scammed by bestbuy or gamestop... all of this slop makes me think the launch will be a disaster!!  Reminds me of Vanguard.

even i will say this isn't as bad as vancrap but they are on the slippery soe slope.
